I have orthodox, conservative, and reform cousins. I grew up practicing Jewish traditions and learning Jewish perspectives. It informs my values, sense of morality, and sense of humor. But I haven't believed in god in a long time, and that's a pretty big part of the Jewish religion. So I'm an atheist, but I'm still Jewish, because it's a religion and an ethnicity (actually a bunch of different ethnicities but again not really the place to get into it). Turning Jews into a race caused some strange things to happen in nazi Germany. Race science in general doesn't make any sense, but even within their twisted worldview it was self contradictory. They determined whether someone was racially Jewish based on number of Jewish grandparents. 3 or 4 and you were Jewish, this was bad news for you. 1 or 2 and you were mixed, which involved some loss of privileges but if you were otherwise a good nazi you'd be fine. This meant that if you had 8 Jewish great grandparents, who all converted to Christianity before having children, the racial purity law would consider you aryan, despite being 100% Jewish by heredity. On the other hand, I read a firsthand account from someone whose father had one Jewish parent and one Christian parent, and he was raised Christian, and their mother had 2 Jewish parents but converted to marry their father, and they never knew they were Jewish, they were just as antisemitic as the rest of the country, only to suddenly find out they were Jewish when the time came. And I would just like to point out that one of three possible grandfathers for Hitler (his grandmom had it going on), and the one he was most like as far as looks were concerned, was in fact Jewish, because I like pointing that fact out.

There were definitely still persecutions and pogroms of people of Jewish descent who were openly practicing Christianity (the Spanish Inquisition was way more about this than witches) under accusations of being secretly still Jewish, was definitely a thing. That said, the Nazis were openly inspired by Jim Crow era America and the very modern theories of scientific racism and eugenics, which extend from the colonial invention of racism to prop up empire by convincing the miserable exploited proles of the imperial core that they have nothing in common with the miserable exploited proles of the imperial periphery.
