To speak on the distinction of Jewish as religion and Jewish as ethnicity: both of my parents were Jewish, I was raised Jewish, I faithfully attended Jewish religious services and Hebrew school. I have orthodox, conservative, and reform cousins. I grew up practicing Jewish traditions and learning Jewish perspectives. It informs my values, sense of morality, and sense of humor. But I haven't believed in god in a long time, and that's a pretty big part of the Jewish religion. So I'm an atheist, but I'm still Jewish, because it's a religion and an ethnicity (actually a bunch of different ethnicities but again not really the place to get into it).

This is almost exactly my experience as well, and why I refer to myself as Jew-ish to my friends. I know it’s not clever or new, but it’s an easy way to explain it in a slightly humorous and self-deprecating way, as is the way of my people.

my fellow ashkenazi I think, lmao, no it's not

I agree, it's why I said I'm Jewish despite being an atheist, but an ethnicity and a race are not the same thing. For instance, Irish is an ethnicity, and white is a race. Irish people are now considered white, but were not always. They didn't stop being Irish when they became white. Similar transformations of racial category happened for Italians and other southern Europeans. It may surprise you to hear that Jews in America can be white or black or any other race and still be Jewish. But if the Nazis take over, then our race would be Jewish and we would face all that means. To make this about me specifically, to describe my race, ethnicity, and religion, I am a white Jewish atheist. Jews are not completely accepted by the dominant culture but I still have privileges over poc. But as I keep saying, the realities of the intersections of race, ethnicity, and religion are yet more complicated and this thread really isn't the place to get into it.

We live in an area with a relatively large Jewish population and I'm always a little careful to explain to practicing Jews that we observe some of the holidays and light a yahrzeit for a few family members but we're not religious. My wife used to get bullied occasionally for being a "fake" and I've seen a few religious people absolutely lose their poo poo on someone for not being religious but still carrying traditions.

Meanwhile I was raised Catholic and that's not an ethnic identity beyond "still kinda hosed up about it."

If I have noticed one thing about the US catholics, it's the whiff of guilt they trail behind.

I grew up in a predominantly catholic country, as an atheist, so my experience is far more lax than that.

https://twitter.com/wokal_distance/status/1732673964261118413?t=PkJ22_vwlRIo_6adOAgCHw&s=19

quote:

:words: The reason woke activists have huge freak outs over small, mundane, everyday thing is to try to make you walk on eggshells to avoid setting them off. However, learning how to appease them forces you to learn and internalize woke ideas so you know how to avoid upsetting them.
2/
People generally want to keep the peace, and the woke abuse this bynusing the threat of freak outs to make you think "how can I avoid upsetting the activists." This forces you to learn woke ideology and think in woke terms, so you can figure out how to avoid setting them off.
3/
The goal of this is psychological: they want you to have to integrate woke ideology into your everyday thinking so that you begin to get a little voice in your head that says "don't do such and such so you can avoid a woke activist freak out."
4/
By doing this the woke are effectively hijacking your psychology by forcing you to integrate woke ideas and norms into your own thinking. When this happens eventually it is your own conscience that is always telling you "don't do such and so or you'll get freaked out on"
5/
Because wokeness has no stopping point it always reaches into every area of life. So, when wokeness hijacks your conscience it turns your conscience into an inward facing woke "eye of sauron" that endlessly searches your mind for any thought that violates woke ideology...
6/
If you do not resist and instead try to avoid troubld you end up being forced to integrate the voice of woke activists into you own thinking, and the result is that you end up having flare ups of conscious guilt every time you have a thought that isn't woke.
7/
Once that happens the woke will have entirely hijacked your conscience and soon you'll be self policing your own thoughts and behaviours in order to avoid getting mobbed or freaked out on.
See how this works?
8/
The woke have a concept called the "unbearable searchlight of complicity." It's their term for constant, unending, hypervigilant searching for anything complicit with "systems of oppression" (racism, sexism, etc)
It's the conceptual equivalent of an all seeing eye of wokeness
9/
The unbearable searchlight of complicity is essentially the same as what @ConceptualJames called the "eye at the end of history." It's an omnipotent eye that looks back on history and judges everyone according to the strictest interpretation of woke ideology.
@ConceptualJames 10/
It's looking back and judging every moment of history, and every thought of every person for even the slightest hint of anything thst is complicit with any system or structure that the woke deem oppresive.

Suddenly "my roommate asked me to do the dishes" becomes "my abusive gaslighting roommate refuses to acknowledge how they're perpetuating white supremacist dynamics in a shared living situation that is supposed to be a safe space" and you're siding with the abuser if you question anything they said. I'm not going to trust any dipshit on the right to have any understanding of this because they clutch at pearls over pronouns and being asked to stop saying slurs is their equivalent of being forced to walk on eggshells, but yeah

Glad they understand this mentality so well, it's almost as though they are such experts they could write books on it

Do they have even the slightest inkling of what "walking on eggshells" is like around them?

"Gas prices are high/low on the way here" -> triggers rant about Biden
"My niece is doing well in school" -> triggers rant about woke public schools
"Mortgage rates are high" -> triggers rant about random uninformed TEH ECOMONY political poo poo
"I like X musician" -> triggers rant about woke Hollywood or Kid Rock or something
"There are lots of EVs around" -> triggers rant about Elon Musk and FREE SPEECH
"So-and-so just came out as gay/trans" -> triggers rant about groomers and Disney
"I almost got into an accident on the way here" -> triggers rant about uninsured illegal immigrants fleeing the scene
"The weather is nice" -> triggers rant about global warming minded leftists

God help you if you directly mention a single thing that's actually in the news

That's a lot of really dumb words for "actions have socially mediated consequences that discourage behavior people don't like", which is literally what culture is.

I love that they come so close to the point without finding it. Yes, the entire idea is that having to "police your own thoughts" causes you to internalize the "woke ideology" that maybe you shouldn't be casually dropping slurs or punching down with your "jokes". You're just also supposed to be capable of introspection instead of becoming a living version of that Principal Skinner meme.

It's interesting bc there are a lot of family members that are still doing Bar/Bat Mitzvahs and everything (although the last one we attended was over Zoom), but my wife didn't have one and none of our kids did. There's yeah a huge range of observance and belief, but a lot of the traditions and cultural ideals are still there and still great. I'm not a huge 'tradition' guy, but I do really love the traditions associated with Judaism.

I think Francis is trying to instill this idea as well, bc he's said that I will always be Catholic no matter what happens or what I believe, just because I was baptized all those years ago. But the catholic traditions seem...IDK less...cultural? It's hard to verbalize

ed: maybe it's that—to me—catholic traditions seem more constrained to church itself, or just constraining in general. But I've had a lot less catholic and a lot more jewish in the second half of my life

It’s smart tactics. Certain words/phrases are automatic wins. “Racism” “gaslighting” “misogyny” “phobic” etc.

If you hear someone say “im not racist/abusive/misogynistic” they’ve already lost no matter what 100% of the time . Trust me, I have to defend myself from those types of accusations several times a day and I never come out looking good even though they’re true, at best, only 20% of the time
