Today, for the first time, I've had 15, 30, 60 second ads on my TV's YouTube app. It looks different too, a small spinning yellow circle. I still got the typical 5 second ads. Actually not x seconds long, just how long it takes til the Skip button appears

Anyone use one of those car insurance services, like Car Shield? I see commercials for them all the time, with at least 3 companies offering the service. I don't recall ever seeing this service offered until like 2 years ago. Feels like a scam, but I don't know.

There seems to be a growing business sector for ripping off late Millennial / early GenZ adults who have no idea what they're doing with [fill in the blank] ownership but are used to having to pay a monthly service for everything. I know someone from this sub-generation who I recently learned pays a monthly fee for furnace service at their house. I 100% guarantee they are paying for a guy to show up and replace the furnace filter.

It's not a full blockade of ads but it does reduce the numbers of ads and tracking in the house. Some apps I use get their ads blocked at home and I'm surprised when I use them and get served an ad while I'm away.

Anything you type starts to generate seemingly random word fragments in front of the cursor like the cursor is a snow plow. It requires stopping every few words to both check to make sure it didn't autocorrect anything to the left of the cursor into nonsense but also to delete the surplus letters generated to the right of the cursor. I've never seen anything like it. Internet Old One posted:Lawyers have gotten more adept at talking about DRM which creates new and lovely requirements… never mind that the content will be up on piratebay like hours after release no matter what you do. I worked at a spanish streaming startup over ten years ago & the studios (we dealt with all of them, as an aggregator, which is why the company went under, probably) all wanted different bitrates, codecs & DRM systems. we ended up making over thirty instances of each title. all the while, they were fussing over the end-user device functionality, like how much RAM was in the smart tv to support stunt-play (pause, rewind & so on), thinking that this was a possible opportunity for someone to steal the content ("one piece at a time, & it didn't cost me a dime"), seriously. while we were delivering content to playstations that had analogue outputs, one studio tried to ban us from streaming HD to macs because the HDMI didn't have HDCP on it. & this was in madrid, where everybody was torrenting everything already. nothing I said about "actually, what we're doing will be a legit, money-earning alternative to piracy & you won't have to bully people into buying stuff on lovely plastic discs either" did any good, because lawyers had discovered some techy words, exactly that. fuckers. essentially, they were micro-managing the blacksmiths while the stable door banged around in the breeze & the ponies were in the back of someone's van, on their way to the glue factory. sorry if this is old-ish, but I am catching up & this touched a nerve. I work at WBD now. I really wanted the streaming company to succeed.

Fuckin' Google Drive. This is the second time it's done this, the only way to get it to work again seems to be a completely clean install, and it will not let me log in with Firefox. Even with all extensions disabled. It just gives me "something went wrong lol" as an error. I keep my Keepass folders in drive, which despite being tagged "always let me look at these" won't work without the program open. So I have to go into it on my phone, send the password to myself via Discord or something, then log in via Chrome, and then get all the settings set up again, because clean install. What a loving pain in the arse. I miss Dropbox, but they made that poo poo too, it doesn't let you install it on more than three devices now. (It has read/write permissions. Of course it does. It worked fine before my last reboot.) Nettle Soup fucked around with this message at 13:40 on Dec 8, 2023 |
