If you haven't already switched to an ergo keyboard it's time to pull the trigger. There seems to be a growing business sector for ripping off late Millennial / early GenZ adults who have no idea what they're doing with [fill in the blank] ownership but are used to having to pay a monthly service for everything. I know someone from this sub-generation who I recently learned pays a monthly fee for furnace service at their house. I 100% guarantee they are paying for a guy to show up and replace the furnace filter.

If you're curious why something got shittier for what appeared to be no good reason check into it and odds are good you'll find the reason is the company was bought by private equity.

For example I had a dentist who was great. I'd been going there for more than a decade and never had any issues. Just get in twice a year for cleanings, a couple crowns that were handled with no issues, no problem. No upsells or anything.

Then a few years back I noticed their office starting getting terrible. They had tons of issues filing insurance claims even for regular cleanings. They had scheduling issues. They had weird ads all over the place for fancy 3d mouth scanning machines. The hygienists would never last more than a single cleaning when previously I had the same one for probably 5 years. And suddenly none of the office people seemed to have any idea what was going on. They seemed to rotate through incredibly rapidly. One of them asked me to email her regarding a claim and I noticed her email domain was for something called "Heartland Dental", two words that never appeared in the dentist's office.

So I looked up what that is and it turns out my dentist's office was now being run by some "dental support organization"(DSO) which as I understand it is like a dentist's office in a box which handles the business side of a dental practice. I can see how those might make sense if you're a dentist who just wants to dentist but doesn't want to deal with the business side.

But then I looked into that company and found that a little before the office started getting lovely the DSO had been bought by one of the worst of the worst private equity firms in the US with a long history of buying and destroying companies. So I guess that's why my dentist's office got lovely for no good reason. Private equity!

Bonus content:
- Private equity is hoovering up local medical practices as the physicians retire. This is leading to significantly higher prices
- The same PE firm famously destroyed Nabisco in the 90s so that's probably why all the cookies and crackers you remember suck now
- They also bought OverDrive, who makes that app that many public libraries use for eBooks. It has been going downhill ever since. Seriously, people are mad enough to write Substacks about it
- The same firm bought and killed Toys ‘R’ Us
- The same firm is killing actual people in a group home business it bought

My local doctors had something like this happen. When the long time physicians retired they sold it to a regional group that must suck because the turnover is constant. The last four visits were all different docs, so I just kind of gave up. Their still send me emails every few months with their latest changes, even all the ones I saw have gone.

Abso-lutely. I set one up last year. It's not a full blockade of ads but it does reduce the numbers of ads and tracking in the house. Some apps I use get their ads blocked at home and I'm surprised when I use them and get served an ad while I'm away.

Lawyers have gotten more adept at talking about DRM which creates new and lovely requirements… never mind that the content will be up on piratebay like hours after release no matter what you do.

I worked at a spanish streaming startup over ten years ago & the studios (we dealt with all of them, as an aggregator, which is why the company went under, probably) all wanted different bitrates, codecs & DRM systems. we ended up making over thirty instances of each title.
all the while, they were fussing over the end-user device functionality, like how much RAM was in the smart tv to support stunt-play (pause, rewind & so on), thinking that this was a possible opportunity for someone to steal the content ("one piece at a time, & it didn't cost me a dime"), seriously. while we were delivering content to playstations that had analogue outputs, one studio tried to ban us from streaming HD to macs because the HDMI didn't have HDCP on it.
& this was in madrid, where everybody was torrenting everything already.
nothing I said about "actually, what we're doing will be a legit, money-earning alternative to piracy & you won't have to bully people into buying stuff on lovely plastic discs either" did any good, because lawyers had discovered some techy words, exactly that.
fuckers.
essentially, they were micro-managing the blacksmiths while the stable door banged around in the breeze & the ponies were in the back of someone's van, on their way to the glue factory.
sorry if this is old-ish, but I am catching up & this touched a nerve. I work at WBD now. I really wanted the streaming company to succeed.

Fuckin' Google Drive. This is the second time it's done this, the only way to get it to work again seems to be a completely clean install, and it will not let me log in with Firefox. Even with all extensions disabled. It just gives me "something went wrong lol" as an error.

I keep my Keepass folders in drive, which despite being tagged "always let me look at these" won't work without the program open. So I have to go into it on my phone, send the password to myself via Discord or something, then log in via Chrome, and then get all the settings set up again, because clean install.

What a loving pain in the arse.
