Ken Jeong can gently caress off. He's never said or did anything funny, just pushes the "angry asian" poo poo and is bereft of skills, talent, and likeability.

I liked him in s2 of The Afterparty. Not angry at all, just a guy trying his best.

I watched through all of Community some time in the past year and it holds up just fine for the most part, there's some stuff that raises an eyebrow but it's largely the stuff that people were commenting on at the time (ie the Jeff/Annie relationship). Ken Jeong is pretty good in the first season, and not terrible in 5/6, but he is unbearable in the middle part (I didn't watch Season 4).

assuming we don't become more like Gilead every day, I wonder if, say, 10 to 15 years from now people will watch Handmaid's Tale and go "wow, that is pretty WTF. Did Whedon write this?"

I know to never read the comments, but dear God (may the Lord open) the episode with the child brides, and how the veils are lifted to show how they're all like 13 years old. And while many of the grooms, all in their 20s or older, look somewhat put off by this, many more are grinning. The comments are about what you would expect from dudes who would love to be Commanders (and probably get executed in public for loving around too much) about how AcTuAlLy this is the best age for maximum children and it's normal. And when called out, the replies are generally "So you expect the Angels/men to be satisfied with used up single moms then?"

First season Chang had some good moments. I think he nails the deranged imposter character perfectly. They just didn't take the character in a way most people liked, becoming increasingly weird and pitiful.

He probably had the best performance in the category of "ill-advised blackface jokes" too, the drow cosplay that they instantly shut down in the D&D episode. Shame that episode got pulled for that, because the entire joke is "no, don't do blackface, we're not doing that", but I get why.

Honestly? If i met him I'd immediately try to get him to talk medical poo poo. I'm a professional disabled person so I feel like it would be most likely to lead to a good and funny convo.

Necessity is the mother of invention: William Stewart Halsted’s addiction and its influence on the development of residency training in North America

"William Stewart Halsted developed a novel residency training program at Johns Hopkins Hospital that, with some modifications, became the model for surgical and medical residency training in North America. While performing anesthesia research early in his career, Halsted became addicted to cocaine and morphine. This paper dissects how his innovative multi-tier residency program helped him hide his addiction while simultaneously providing outstanding patient care and academic training."

How do people feel about Dean's character as a whole? They toyed with a lot of taboos with his portrayal.

feetnotes

Community is great, but early on they sometimes lost track of where the line was between "having a racist character say racist things, as a joke, in a way that clearly demonstrates they are wrong" and "just making racist jokes, but having the racist character say them so it's 'okay'."

They were often on the correct side of that line, and they never got as bad as stuff like The Office. But it's there.

Hollywood has really strong unions so you have mandated rest times even if you are working 12-14 hours per day for up to several months at a time.

Doctors don't really have that as far as I know, at least not while they're still young.

Same. It was on the level of It's Always Sunny and Thropic Thunder where the entire point is how wrong it is, and neither of those got pulled as far as I know.

Pierce and his dad were way more offensive most of the time and none of that got pulled which, to be clear, shouldn't because the entire point is that he's an awful person being awful. "I can excuse the racism but I draw the line at animal cruelty" is a great bit.

I do get why they pulled the episode given the culture at the time and erring on the side of caution and it's not my place to decide whether other people's grievances are valid, so whatever.
