i'm downloading the Tribes 3 playtest now. it wasn't a perfect game but i really enjoyed Ascend and miss skiing around bigtime

I cant decide if they hosed it up or if I just forgot what it was like in the earlier games (I stopped playing Ascend like a decade ago and have never revisited any of the old Tribes). I had fun with the playtest and got more used to it as I played, but I didn’t always feel like there was much control over my speed or direction. Theres no basic jump which feels odd and iirc is a change from the other games. Grenade jumping still works to get speed which is cool. The jetpack energy is stingy and often didn’t get me as far as I thought it could. I had more success when I spammed it on upslopes (lots of little “jumps) than just flying to the top. Ski seems to unreliably jolt you forward off the surface you’re trying to ski (mb skill issue). I don’t feel like I have a great idea of what angle works for maintaining momentum either. The base defense stuff is very minimal as far as I can tell, though could easily be fleshed out since this is only an alpha. No vehicles that I saw either. Worst crime by far is no voice lines, which means both gravely reduced comedy levels and no chance of coordinating flag runs in game. One thing I thought flat-out sucked is the big walls around the map edge. I get that there has to be walls somewhere but can’t they be like, see-through force field giving me a beautiful alien skybox vista or something? I really don’t get why anyone would make a huge open tribes map the edges of which are just literally a big brick wall. It makes me feel like I’m fighting in a shoebox. I had fun with it but I hope they can improve on it.

the skiing feels "fake". you get a free sprint boost when you start it and you latch on to the ground. like, if you ski along the side of a hill you dont curve with the slope at all--you just stick to the terrain and go straight. the jets are weak and dont have much energy so low-speed disk duels aren't as interesting either and simple things like jetting up to a flag stand are annoying because you dont get much height

Our community map project The Diseases, and Casualties This Year Being 1632 got a runner-up award this year! Huge shoutouts to granggg, LeschNyhan, Weird Sandwich, and A.o.D. for doing absolutely phenomenal work on the maps, it was a year of work and it paid off massively

They overhauled the skiing and it works as expected now. They also added an option to let you choose how much lateral jet thrust you want as a trade off of vertical thrust. This is still a very early alpha, so they still have a lot of missing features to implement yet. But so far they're improving the things I want addressed. The development trajectory is pretty promising. Tribes is back and it rules.

I need a place to reminisce over FEAR and Delta Force: Black Hawk Down and the rest of my favorite shooters from that era. every so often I replay FEAR and its expansion packs. I just managed to get a copy of the 360 port for both FEAR and FEAR Files so i've been making my way through it on console just for the novelty (and cheevos). might seriously be among my favorite single-player FPS games of all time

After all this time it’s just nice to see and hear them chatting in this sort of context (we know they’re civil from Romero’s book etc but to see it was nice) Thought the most heartwarming comment actually came from Carmack and he seemed genuinely warm about reconciling things with id, his positive return to QuakeCon and suggesting to Romero that they should do it together in the future.
