It's not, there's no naval or pirate stuff. It is a good RPG though. Looking forward to the sequel.

Not according to that video

Greedfall is not a pirate RPG

Risen 3 is a pirate rpg but you don't get to do much piracy in it, it's just a standard Piranha Bytes game but there's boat.

...about how Ubisoft put this up at the game awards like it's some sort of feat to be proud of. I was going to add how ridiculous it is for a game we haven't seen any gameplay of and thought "well, maybe there's a video of gameplay somewhere."
It turns out Ubisoft posted a 10 minute gameplay deep dive yesterday:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=teZaV3bOMxY

And I will fully admit I have not watched it from start to end and instead have clicked on various parts of the video only to discover most of this video is just cinematic footage and not actual gameplay. Sure, they audibly describe what the gameplay is, but it appears they do not show more than 10 seconds of a person playing the video game at any point. There is no way this poo poo isn't DOA. If it is, by some miracle, a good game, they need to fire their marketing department.

I want a Black Flag 2, and Skull and Bones is not it. I liked being able to leave the wheel and swing over to the enemy ship during boarding, or climb the masts, etc, and Skull and Bones seems to have none of that, you only walk around in a town. Give me a real open world pirate game like Black Flag but better.

If you skip to 5:20, you see them gathering treasure from wrecks and harvesting ore and then trees; you're just sailing up to the land and pressing a button. No underwater bell or swimming or anything, you are a ship not a person. Blegh. Didn't this start out as a GaaS? I cant exactly remember it has been too long.

Maybe the ship combat will still be fun enough, they had that right before at least.

lol that Ubisoft have spent years of time and millions of dollars to make a worse pirate game than the pirate game they made 10 years ago

I tried it because the trailer made it seem like maybe had some kind of entertainment casino show thing going on thought maybe it had some novel gameplay, obstacle course, heist, bonus points for doing tricks, id something. It was free so that was a bad sign. Hopped in anyway and it's just an MP shooter with capture the flag and a crap load of stuff to buy with currency.

I enjoyed the original BG+E a lot and I will be thrilled beyond words if BG+E2 does not ever come out

The trailer where everything had to be Dark And Edgy Swearfuck Crimemonkey Galore left me aghast at how they could butcher the tone and spirit that made the original so good

Like, the idea that a goofy and fun looking game had a real dark edge to it isn't unusual but it really worked for BG+E because of how earnest and sweet it was, then they just chuck everything away and make it so it's like a mid 2010's Rated Teen reboot. gently caress that

I still don't understand why it's an insane idea to have a pve-only mode.

If the pvp mode can't sustain itself along aside a pve mode, then the pvp mode shouldn't exist because clearly not enough people want it.
There's whole chapters about it in several books from Bartle, the guy who invented MMOs, and basically the historically observed pattern is a game that was built on having wolf-and-sheep interactions can't sustain itself if the wolves and sheep are segretated. Like it's not just that PvP can't sustain itself, PvE can't either. Wolves get bored and leave, and sheep who wanted to be alone don't have enough of a game to be sustained and leave. The interaction between different types of player provided the actual flavor because the game was originally designed that way.

Case in point, Sea of Thieves is a boring grind versus automated skeletons without other players, be they co-op or PvP. But it is very amusing with them, full of dumb stuff happening, and you can really see that's because almost all game systems were designed with it in mind. This really reached its height early on with the Hungering Deep, with required you to work with at least one other crew when no formal co-op mechanism existed, starting and ending at one quickly extremely well-known spot on the map, and was prime ground for the kind of shaky alliance-and-betrayal play you'd see in pirate fiction. You just had to get out there and manage to reach an understanding about doing that quest together not knowing if the other guys would blow you up first, or during the afterparty, or on another day, or you'd betray them first. Without that, it was just a linear kill-the-shark mission. I think there is potential for a co-op player game using Sea of Thieves' aesthetic and mechanics, but Sea of Thieves without other players ain't it, it just lacks content and the way the content has evolved (intricate co-op puzzle hunts in the first tall tales, linear do-as-you're-told stories with NPCs talking for hours these days) makes it less and less interesting as years go by.

The idea sounded silly enough that I figured it might be funny (or funny bad) at least, but it's pretty devoid of humor outside of a few cute visual gags. The whole thing just tried to carry itself on being edgy, po-faced takes on E or T rated Ubisoft characters, there weren't really "jokes" outside of the meta-joke of what is essentially an Ubisoft promo being kind of off the rails. The framing story and non-cameo stuff was pretty boring.

The only real notable bits that I remember:

Rayman loses his TV spot for the evil fascist government after a long bit realizing he's been complicit in space racism or something, goes off the deep end into a coke binge and awakens by becoming a mass shooter wearing a trenchcoat.

Jade & Pey'j join a Suicide Squad heist, Pey'j announces he wants to gently caress Jade, she gets shot to death by a Far Cry guy before her head graphically explodes. Pey'j get shot to death by cops at a race riot.

Assassin's Creed isn't a specific cameo (because Ubisoft probably cares about that IP too much to let him do anything else) but is instead a cartoon frog with a French accent that gets tortured

Sam Fisher has a cyber wheelchair and his 6 year old daughter rats him out to the cops

It wasn't the worst bit of gaming-related media I've ever seen but incredibly unmemorable outside of how it was rude to my childhood nostalgia lol. BG&E was my favorite game ever when I was a kid & having the only actual appearance from the IP in many many years be this felt kind of lame. I guess it's pretty representative of how the "franchise" got treated, not sure if I can even blame Ubisoft or if it's the guy(s) behind it wanting to chase what appeared to be extremely stupid and bad ideas nobody asked for instead of just a straightforward follow up to a very good action-adventure game.
