“Obligation-Actual to Dimetrodon-Actual,” Syntyche radioed, switching to the master command channel. The DropShip would be monitoring all of their communications regardless; but they’d stay quiet unless they had a tactical update or Syntyche called for them. In typical SLDF fashion, the local and command-level callsigns of the attack unit were different. There were too many ways for supposedly secure broadcasts to be overheard; obfuscating which ‘Mech was the actual commander was always a safe-ish way to protect from a headhunter unit.

“Dimetrodon-Actual,” Commander Ryojo replied. “What is it, Obligation?”

“We’re wrapping up here,” Prodigal replied, pausing momentarily to fire her Mongoose’s large laser. It caught the enemy Hunchback squarely in the chest. The ‘Mech staggered as Grandpa hit it with a cluster munition—and nearly fell as its hip actuator cracked.

“Plan A is a bust; enemy commander down to massive cockpit trauma. I have an idea—but it’s going to depend on how quickly we can break our spares out of storage and ‘re-float’ a BattleMaster. Would you please call down the Goddess Orinoco? We’re going to need her Mechbays, technicians—and as many spacers willing to get an astech crash course as we can. Maybe even Ravager and her Thunderbolt.”

“Understood, Obligation. We’ll make the call—G.O.-Actual is has been chomping at the bit to land and top off her water tanks anyway.”

Honestly, I think now is the time to go all-in. Most of the Hunchback's armour has been shot away and its right leg is extremely vulnerable. If everyone does their best to maximise their accuracy mods it shouldn't survive another turn. Losing another mech is a valid concern, but IMO that would still be a worthwhile exchange - the Battlemaster is fully salvageable, and we still have other mechs that can be brought out of storage.

“Oh s—!" Rampart’s shout of terrified surprise was cut off almost instantly as her comms went dark. The Blackjack’s boxy chest and shoulders separated from its midriff as a blast from the Hunchback’s autocannon cut it in half. The ‘Mech’s head and shoulders caromed off its own frozen legs to bounce on the snowy earth. It kicked up a great cloud of powder that was soon enveloped by a mushroom cloud of displaced snowflakes as the rest of the ‘Mech toppled over behind it.

“drat—drat!” Syntyche muttered to herself. Her plan hadn’t been relying on the Blackjack; but a fall like that had certainly left Rampart injured or worse. With luck, it wouldn’t be too bad. What she had in mind was risky and without all of her Mechwarriors behind her, she doubted The Captains would approve it. Even if she did have technical command for ground operations; if they disapproved they could easily deny her support if she tried to proceed anyway. The technicians were, after all, crewmen aboard their ships.

Her lasers carved into the Hunchback’s side; exposing a section of yellow and black hazard striping that nearly always marked the border of an ammo bin. The entire bin was usually painted for the sake of technicians and salvagers, so they didn’t try cutting into anything containing live ammo. For a moment she held her breath—but the bin held, even as its surface grew an angry dull red. It might’ve already been dry on ammo.

“Thanks, Lieutenant.” Grandpa’s Hoplite twisted, turning its back to the Hunchback. Syntyche’s heart caught in her throat as her lance’s biggest medium ‘Mech turned its back on the Hunchback. She’d been about to shout, to cry out a warning, but it died unvoiced as the Hoplite’s lasers probed the Hunchback’s chest and damaged leg. The latter was severed at the hip, its structure too weakened to support the weight of the Hunchback’s upper body. And then the ‘Mech exploded, its chest vanishing in a fireball that blasted away the flurry that had kept the remains of the Blackjack hidden.

After-Action Report:
Dramatic finish!

I really couldn’t have asked for that to go better. That was just about the perfect amount of attrition. The Sentinel is salvageable, the Hoplite can be repaired, and the Mongoose didn’t suffer any permanent harm. Colonel Wendigo lasted almost exactly as many turns as I expected him to (I was terrified he’d die to an ammo explosion the moment the Hunchback shot him in the back, so I just stuffed that trashfire of a Banshee so full of stuff that was reasonably unlikely.

The secondary objectives weren’t completed; but Wendigo was too slow to escape so unless things went really well or the players pushed for him that was probably a write-off. They were quite wise to leave him to his own devices and pick off the hilariously vulnerable Talons rather than eating many turns of unnecessary AC/10 fire trying to save the Colonel. The loss of the BattleMaster’s clue isn’t a big deal—I figured either they’d get an assault ‘Mech out of this fight; or they’d get some hard evidence.

A hard-fought victory, nice work everyone! There’ll be a big vote coming up; and you’ll get to see the spares the Aqueduct was carrying. The specific ‘Mechs lost do influence what you’re getting. First things first, though:

It hadn’t taken long to recover Rampart and Ironhead. Rampart’s Blackjack was a total loss, but the upper portion had landed upright so they’d been able to get her out and into a warm-ish local transport crawler quickly. Ironhead’s Sentinel was still functional—just not mobile. Dragging it back to the Dimetrodon had been easy enough.

The BattleMaster was another story. Even combined, the Hoplite and Mongoose hadn’t been able to move it a meter. It was only with the added help of Ravager and her undamaged Thunderbolt that they’d been able to get the big assault ‘Mech back to the Dimetrodon; and just dragging it to the ship had taken the better part of a day. Getting it upright and into a ‘Mechbay without damaging it or the ship had been another challenge, even with Mikal Krantz personally timing the locking of the BattleMaster’s leg actuators.

Syntyche panted, rubbing her hands and shoulders to try to keep them warm—and keep her blood circulating—as the Dimetrodon’s door closed. Her body ached as if she’d personally carried the BattleMaster on her back the whole way.

“How long until you can get that monster functional?” She asked once the echoing clang of the closing door had subsided.

Mikal regarded her quietly. The Dimetrodon’s chief technician was of the typical no-nonsense variety. “Well, you’ve brought in most of the parts—which is good. We’re not really carrying assault ‘Mech spares. Shoring up the structural supports should be easy enough; and we can cobble together a cockpit with the spares we do have. It’d be easier if you can talk the locals into letting us salvage that,” Mikal shuddered, “Banshee. With ‘Colonel’ Wendigo and his lance all dead, the locals don’t really have the means to stop us—”

“I’d prefer to avoid antagonizing them. We are here to help them, as best as we’re able. And they can make our lives hell if we piss them off. I’m just hoping I can get them on board. Assuming I can sell my plan to The Captains,” Syntyche appended, using the collective slang for the three DropShip commanders. The highest ranking officer was Captain Bergfalk; but his JumpShip was too far distant to consult with for most operations. Now that the enemy was on the ground. The odds of a transmission being detected was much higher now, even with the above-average interference from the system’s primary, Glint.

“—so my question is, how much time do we have?” Mikal finished.

“Most raiding operations budget two months to handle unexpected issues,” Syntyche mused; “but we have no idea what the raiders’ timetables look like. We might have something more concrete once we interrogate the mechwarrior from the Falcon; but I’d assume we have no more than a month to work.”

The chief tech rubbed the back of his neck. “That’s going to be tight. We’re going to need the Banshee.”

“And the spares on the Goddess Orinoco,” Syntyche agreed.

IV5267 – Glint (Local Name)
Frigid (Local Name), Port Afternoon Outskirts
Spinward Periphery
June 24th, 2763

Syntyche stood at ease on the bridge of the Dimetrodon, watching the drive flares from the Goddess Orinoco. The Aqueduct-class DropShip were always a little bit awkward. They were one of the biggest ships that could still land; and under a full load they could only take off again with the help of a quintet of massive “belt boosters” that ringed the outer hull. This put Aqueducts and, to a lesser extent, the Mammoth-class they’d been spun off from, under a lot of stress while on the ground. Dedicated spaceports would wheel gantries under the belt thrusters to take some of the pressure off if a ship needed to stay on the ground for an extended period; but they didn’t have access to those luxuries and in any case Syntyche didn’t intend to stay groundside for the year it would take to start doing that ship permanent damage.

“They’ll see her landing,” Commander Ryoji commented almost idly. “If they brought a Union or a trio of Leopards, they could launch fighters.”

“They’d have a bear of a time recovering them,” and that was true enough. Launching fighters from a grounded DropShip wasn’t impossible; but without an airstrip landing them would be. She just had to hope the enemy commander hadn’t thought to have a dirt strip built—or that, even if he had, the crew aboard their ships had been too unwilling to work in the bitter cold to get one finished in such a short time. “And an Aqueduct’s no threat to BattleMechs and easily crippled on the ground.”

“That’s a good point,” Ryoji agreed. “If I were in the enemy commander’s shoes, I wouldn’t put up birds unless I was certain your team was in trouble. As long as we keep sending irregular, garbled transmissions from the Falcon they probably won’t worry. IV5267’s a bit of a pain to broadcast through.”

The Goddess Orinoco grew larger and larger, touching down a safe distance away—about a kilometer distant. Its outer hull steamed as waste heat instantly sublimated the snow its landing had kicked up. Syntyche patted her own shoulders, in a gesture that was starting to grow familiar—as if the act itself would ward off the cold. “I’d best go fetch Commander Jung. Three’s enough for a concensus.”

Ryoji turned, eyeing Syntyche carefully. “You’re plotting something. I’m not going to like it, am I?”

“I am. And I hope you do.”

************************************************************

“Aww, poo poo.” Vladyslava stared up at her new ‘Mech in dismay. She and Rampart had split from Prodigal’s entourage to find their new rides. She’d been hoping for something at least as nimble as her Sentinel. Like a Lancelot, or a Night Hawk. She’d even have settled for a fast jumper like an Assassin.

The blocky slab of a Rifleman stared back at her. Its boxy figure more closely resembled Rampart’s lost Blackjack than the sleek lines of her Sentinel. The Rifleman was one of the SLDF’s mainstays; probably the only thing less surprising would’ve been an Archer. But at the same time, its flaws were widely known. She wasn’t sure how long she spent staring at its primer-gray surface. Only Rampart’s arrival snapped her out of her disappointment.

“Nice, a Rifleman.”

“‘Nice’ isn’t the word I’d use.” She didn’t shift her gaze from the ‘Mech. “What did the lieutenant assign you to?”

“An Ostsol,” Rampart replied mildly.

Ironhead speared her with a look. “Trade you?”

“That’s not really up to me,” Rampart chucked. “But: no.”

Ironhead grimaced, looking back up at her new ‘Mech. “… But it’s just so slow.”

“Look on the bright side,” Rampart clapped her on the shoulder. “At least you’re not going to be cold.

************************************************************

Syntyche took a breath. The situation reminded her a bit of giving her senior tactical thesis back at West Point. Fortunately, Commander Jung would be easy enough to persuade. He was military; but he came up through the ranks of the quartermasters. He’d defer to Commander Ryoji, so Syntyche really only had one person to convince. How hard that would turn out to be, well—that was the question.

She didn’t beat around the bush. “I’d like to seize the enemy’s DropShip.”

“Not a chance,” Ryoji grimaced. “A single lance of damaged ‘Mechs is no match for a Union. Blast your way into one? Maybe. Shoot one down as it’s taking off? If you’re incredibly lucky. But secure one? There’s no way.”

“There is,” Syntyche replied. “Using the BattleMaster; and maybe the Falcon if we can get the leg back on. We borrow a few local snow crawlers, the marines from the Dimetrodon and Goddess Orinoco, as many locals as we can convince to help us come take revenge for Colonel Wendigo. They shouldn’t suspect the BattleMaster so we should be able to get close.”

“And there’s no way they haven’t tarped up to keep the outer hull and turret mechanisms from freezing up. So it’ll take them at least a minute to undog their guns, if not two.” She took a breath, and held up a finger. “One lance. We’ll have to deal with one lance. There’s no way they’ve got anything as heavy as the BattleMaster; and if we bring Ravager along, we’ll have them outnumbered.”

I will be extremely disappointed if /anyone/ votes against seizing the Dropship.

happy to be of service.

more seriously, when the vote does win, I would go for having just Ravager over trying to get both - Ravager's help will probably come cheap given what we've done for them, whereas the inability to save the Colonel might mean the cost of getting the local's help could possibly exceed what we'd get from them.

PTN’s note: If the thread had activated a spare before taking a combat loss, there was a not insignificant chance it would’ve been a Charger.

so we made the wrong choice, is what you're saying.

I mean we're obviously trying to take the dropship. The real question is who we want to try and have assisting us. Having everyone on board would be great, but I can't help but wonder if we really want to split the spoils 3 ways...

Voting to seize the DropShip and ask Ravager to help us do it. Decisive action is necessary if we want to nip this conspiracy in the bud.

Crunch doesn't have to perfectly describe the fluff, especially for tertiary characters stuck in deathtraps.

Gotta be in it to win it. We need SOME kind of intelligence beyond "people are doing things for reasons(?)"
