Hey everyone, I don't post often but I wondered if you could help me with something; I got a message from my GP from a couple of student doctors asking to talk to me about my future screenings for a project they're doing on transgender care and screenings, given that I am indeed trans and they might need a little more attention paid to them, so I said absolutely, but now that I think about it, how did they know I was trans? Should a couple of student doctors just casually have access to my medical record? As it happens the conversation we had was pretty engaging and felt helpful for all of us, so in context I'm not too put out, but I'm not sure how I feel about the precedent of them being able to just ask the database to summon the transes and I guess I'm just curious about the legality of people's ability to search up this information.

Did they specifically want to talk to you or did the request go to your doctor who contacted you? If the latter then... presumably that's the only way you could contact people for medical studies outside of depending entirely on volunteering. I guess the assumption would be that they have that information on file because you told your doctor already so they might see you on a database as "trans patient #42069" and if they want more information you doctor has to speak to you about it. Basically you can conceivably compartmentalize information like that so it doesn't necessarily mean they can just medigoogle all your personal info.

It might be that the doctor reached out to you pseudo-anonymously in that the students know that you exist, but are only allowed to know your name as like, Potential Volunteer 123 until you affirmed interest. I'd assume it's the same way that someone with any condition might have their GP reach out on behalf of The Condition UK to do further research, since otherwise The Condition UK have to start going door to door like Marilyn Manson.

It wasn't my doctor, I just got a text from my surgery from the two students doctors themselves, and in talking to them there was an implication they had talked to a reasonable number of us. I can fully believe there's a caveat somewhere that allows for it, your suggestions make sense, and I didn't object to talking to them, I guess the concept of that information being too accessible is just making something at the back of my head itchy.

That does sound weird then yeah... I wonder if there's some opt in/out thing? When I was a kid I went to the doctor about a bollock lump and after he had a squeeze he called in a junior doctor and had him do it too for some practical experience. So the NHS is in my opinion slightly odd about how wide your invitation to bollock fondling is, literally and/or metaphorically. OwlFancier fucked around with this message at 19:07 on Dec 11, 2023 |

If it's a teaching practice and the students are on placement with the practice, they're as entitled to search the GP database as anyone who works there is. If the GP practice just sent out person-identifiable information to the first group of student doctors who came calling, that would be a breach of Information Governance. And given what GP practices are like, it's probably 50:50 either way, tbh.

I like being a teaching case. Feels like you're doing some good, you know? The second last thing I remember before my butt surgery on my butt was seeing the surgeon and several students/junior doctors crowding round to get a good look The last thing I remember is saying "hey can you turn up the Propofol, I still seem to be awake"

My experience is that NHS teaching hospitals lean heavily on the presumption of a genial "well they've got to learn somewhere" attitude to the student doctors. Which is fair enough, but sometimes it would be nice if they warned you there was going to be 20 of them watching.

I've always been asked first if I'm happy to have a load of students look at the weird lump on my stoma or whatever I'm going under the knife for that time. I'm fine with that; a few more people seeing my innards isn't a problem. They're even in a medical textbook somewhere, I'm told.

When I last went to a podiatry clinic, they had students doing all the initial analysis and an I assume fully qualified podiatrist going round checking how they were doing. But he was testing them on their reasoning in depth, so I sat there really awkwardly while some poor student panicked and gave apparently increasingly wrong answers about what might be the problem with my foot and why they thought it was the case. I felt really sorry for them cause they were getting super flustered and the podiatrist was pretty abrupt with them.

Failed Imagineer posted:Messages disappear if you disable the auto-backup, or if you happen to change phones before certain incriminating texts happen to be auto-backedup. Both of which would be pretty convenient, but I'd least understand a Govt device where cloud backups are turned off by default I find it incredible that people running the country are allowed to even use WhatsApp to the extent that their messages would be important to an inquiry. My pointless computer touching job contract explicitly forbids using any communication that's outside the purview of corporate IT, because all comms have to be discoverable in the event of a legal dispute. I know at least one sales person who got sacked because he was promising undeliverable services to a client via his personal email, which only cropped up when the client used the emails as part of their complaint. Our sales people and others who have regular contact with clients have company phones that are completely managed by corp IT and can only have approved apps installed. And nothing our company does is remotely as important as managing a national pandemic strategy.

The people who would have to agree to that regulation are the government, and they're not going to vote to regulate themselves.
