I'm starting to get my basic Shikoku itinerary set for March 2024 and it looks like this:

Day 1 to 3: Shimanami Bike Tour from Onomichi and ending in Matsuyama. Stay the night in Matsuyama
Day 4: Full day in Matsuyama
Day 5: Rent a car and drive to Kochi
Day 6: Full day in Kochi and explore Kochi and surrounding areas
Day 7: Leave Kochi to go to the Iya Valley, stay a night there
Day 8: Spend the day in Iya Valley, hike up Tsurugi, drive to Takamatsu in the evening
Day 9: Full day in Takamatsu
Day 10: Fly back to Tokyo from Takamatsu

Open for any suggestions and ideas! Also wondering if we should plan on two nights in Iya Valley and cut off a night in one of the cities.

I feel like a shikoku trip without a naoshima island visit is incomplete

If you're going hiking or backpacking somewhere specific, then maybe.

if you're going to stay in the cities, you don't need a drat flashlight.

if you somehow get to Japan and need a flashlight, it's still the third largest country in the world by GDP, we have flashlights here

My only recommendation is a bag/storage solution for chargers to keep in your backpack. And possibly a portable charging battery to help top up any phones or cameras that might need it while walking around. But otherwise, good walking shoes and some cash.

+1 to cash being the best thing you can give.

I brought along a flashlight but that was because it had different colors and I wanted to use it for fill light in photos. So if that niche applies to you then sure I guess.

Compression packing bags. There are a lot of cheapo ones on amazon which you should avoid. But the Eagle Creek ones are real good. They make packing so much better. You can fit so much more in less space.

These for socks, underwear and that sort of thing:
https://www.eaglecreek.com/products/pack-it-isolate-compression-cube-set-sm

And these for shirts and things you want to keep relatively flat:

E: Also, a smallish, 1 quart or so, toiletry bag is helpful. The good ones are fairly good at keeping any spilled liquids inside.

You should get your brother a small change purse or a wallet with one built in because compared to the U.S. You will use cash more frequently, and everything under 1000¥ is in coins do you end up with a lot of them.

Comedy option but not really: just go to my local currency exchange place and get a wad of yen? I actually think I still have some coins from my last trip.

Any recommendations for a decent wallet change purse to put it in?

One of my all-time favorite funny study abroad memories was an American guy on our trip bringing an actual desk lamp with him to China because he wasn't sure if they were going to have lights.

He fobbed it off as a gift to one of the principals of the schools his group was visiting IIRC.

Compare their rate to what you can get from a bank and what you can get inside Japan, the little exchange booths in a lot of places around the world frequently have bad rates but it's very situational.

Yeah I wouldn't recommend yen. The rates at those booths in Ueno Station are better than you'll get anywhere else. I did some in the US my trip since the yen had bottomed out at 150 and I figured it'd go up by the time I traveled, which turned out to be true, but that's a gamble. If you're not interested in doing light currency speculation you're better off just using an ATM in Japan or exchanging there. Or if you really want to bring 2000 yen bills and confuse people.

I quite like Atlas Obscura as it often has a lot of the weirder and less obvious stuff in there mixed with the big tourist attractions. https://www.atlasobscura.com/things-to-do/japan

Oh yeah, one of the things I brought up a few weeks ago before my trip was worrying about how to maximize the exchange rate. After using my credit card a bunch in Japan and checking my statements (Chase Sapphire Reserve) it came like within 1-2% of the going rate. I'll worry less about that in the future then and just use my travel card whenever possible.

Although getting a bunch of cash is still useful for various things. Useful when you pass some stand selling a snack at 100 yen or any other cash only restaurant/venue. I ended up going to my bank to get it and they gave me pretty close to the rate too (like 3% difference)

Although I'm pretty sure the majority of the cash I did end up spending was in the arcade lol

More and more places take card, so it's not like the stories from 10 or 20 years ago. But you should try to always have some amount of cash on you.

Yeah I usually have 20-30 on me at any given time and just assume anywhere I go is not going to accept cards. Not like you're going to get mugged.

I know a dumbass who acts like he has an allergy to cash and refuses to carry it, ever, for any reason, and he goes to Japan then complains about how hard it is to pay for things and all the restaurants he can't go to. Don't be that guy.

If you take out too much cash you can always use it in place of a card too. You find everywhere accepts cash, and you will rarely run into card only places. I think maybe 1 or 2 in my 2 months there.

BTW Schwab did refund my ATM feee, it was just so small after the exchange rate I barely noticed it lol.

If I recall correctly, Japan has the same rules as the US and most modern countries, which is that legal cash tender is required to be accepted as a way to pay for things no matter if you have a card or not.
