Still waiting for that country's government to fully embrace the cognitive dissonance.

First, by seriously suggesting that modern facism per se isn't that bad and is often misunderstood due to previous iterations. How the Americans shouting that Jews will not replace them and calling for a Red Caeser are actually the good ones. And begin teaching it in schools.

Next, by adding a swastika to the flag saying it's just an ancient symbol guys.

Finally, outright erecting statues to Adolf with (EVERYTHING UNTIL SUMMER 1941) on them.

All while continuing to claim they're fighting Nazis in Ukraine.

Watching the Sejm in the background, along the rest of the country. Seems like it’s a popular pastime, which is great, because people need to learn how parlimentarism works. I remember a hear or two ago the’d be 300 people on the Sejm stream, now it’s 30.000.

The public project to re-introduce in vitro financing was discussed today and PiS just ran away, the few people they left behind were trying to make a case that they’re not against in-vitro, they’re just concerned about legislative quality. Grzegorz Braun continued to claim in vitro is eugenics and telling stories how he saw embryo dissections carried out by veterinarians. He seems to be universally hated by the Sejm, which is nice.

Appearently their great, revolutionary idea is that religion will still be teached in schools, but only on first and last lesson. xD

This is also just a dumb requirement because creating a decent school schedule that isn't hell on students, teachers and parents is hard enough already. There's a zillion competing and often mutually exclusive factors of time, space and availability, which results in most schedules being lovely and impractical. The religion thing would add yet another wrinkle to the absurdly complicated logic problem. It's one of those classic politician solutions to a problem that sound like an easy compromise on paper if you have no idea about the actual processes on the ground.

Sejm just popped 300k subs. Upside is people finally started to watch and learn how the country is governed, which for a post-soviet society is a huge deal and a blow to the fash and autocrats. Downside is Brown now has a larger platform than he ever had and he’s milking it for all he can - he’s in the speaker’s box every 5 minutes and I heard his “I watched a zootechnician dissect a human embryo” story at least four times in the last week.

Wow. In vitro financing is a huge deal for me. My wife and I are after two failed attempts and it was hard on our home budget. Anyway I'm concerned about one thing only - Duda vetoing most of the acts coming from Sejm. I heard a rumor that allegedly he received suggestions that if he won't make life difficult for the new democratic majority, he might have a career in EU or NATO structures after the end of his presidency. We'll see soon enough I guess. If he chooses to be a problem though, the instability may last until 2025, that's when next presidential election will happen.

Mokotow
Apr 16, 2012

Also an in vitro beneficiary, we were lucky to get into the Warsaw funding.

Duda vetoing everything is a possibility, but it comes at a huge pr costs and losing any independent voters he might still have, and can result in blocking both his international career and any political future after PiS.

Hołownia is pretty great. He started a new series on the official Sejm YT channel where he’s showing everyone around the Sejm with a Sejm staff historian in tow. It’s fascinating! The Pioneer slav car speakers bolted on to the marshal’s desk are great.

Happy you made it in Warsaw!

It may be wishful thinking on my part, but personally I believe in Duda's political self preservation-instinct and I really hope he won't choose to destroy his future career by antagonizing half of the voters.

As for Hołownia, man, I don't want to sound over-enthusiastic or naive but I feel like he is single-handedly giving back Sejm, parliamentary culture and democracy back to the nation, piece after piece. It's very refreshing and feels like I'm finally living in a different country. The video you linked is most definitely an interesting watch.

It took KO/PO what, a week to trip over their own dicks.

First new law in this parliament had a lofty goal of freezing heating prices for the winter, but got amended with a tonne of regulations easing the construction of windmills, including the ability to reclaim or take over control of land for related power cable connections and bringing down the minimum distance between windmills and houses from 500 to 300 meters. of course no one is willing to admit just who made these amendments.

loving PO, back to this poo poo almost day one.

Edit: it’s actually unclear if this nugget cane from KO or PL2025.

Easing regulations on windmills seems like a good thing? How is it a KO bad moment

Mokotow
Apr 16, 2012

It’s bad because how it was tucked into a seemingly unrelated law, and it happened to be one of the very first things the new parliament is working on.

The explanation goes that the new regulation aims to freeze power and heat price increases in 2024. The easing of windmill construction regulations is a long-term solution of the same base problem: lack of available energy.

This has not been explained or communicated in any way, leaving journalist going “wtf how did this made it in here” and PiS spinning it immediately into “Germans getting repaid for their support of Tusk” by backdooring evil capitalist laws that will leave Jan Polak with a huge windmill in front of his obora.

This was all explained today - mainly that indeed, the windmill distance to houses will be decreased, but for small, private-use windmills. All the windmills stuff has been taken out and will be processed separately in the future.

It’s a huge communications failure, especially since Hołownia has been doing a great job keeping things transparent. It also gave PiS an opportunity to start a criminal investigation and call for a parliamentary commission against lobbying.

Just to further expand how silly and avoidable this was - when news started going around about the contents of the new regulations, no one was able, wanted or knew where exactly the text came from. This is not a secret, it was made in a task force composed of a few KO and PL2050 parliamentarians and energy sector specialists. No one would take ownership during the initial shitstorm and one KO parliamentarian admitted he signed the law but never actually read it. This is just sheer stupidity.

Eh I guess so. I support all laws that push for renewables in Poland, it's winter time and air quality is so so bad again it makes me hate this country.

Pushing it through earlier won't make much difference anyway so I think that parliament should take it's time to make a good law, but I'm not against what they are doing now.

"Scientifically proven, rich and creamy."

Can anyone fill me in, how credible are the accusations and demands made by truckers blockading border crossings to Ukraine in Poland, Slovakia and Hungary?

Lichtenstein
May 31, 2012

It'll make sense, eventually.
Fairly reasonable. A good rule of thumb in these matters is whether anyone in the region other than Poland and Hungary is also getting mad.

Trucking already has been a fairly unpleasant race-to-the-bottom exploiting the drivers for what they're worth that already struggled with coked out immigrants pulling all-nighters being the only ones to really hit the quotas. And this is essentially pulling an EU-mandated Uber situation, where Ukraine can essentially ignore all of the administrative nickel-and-diming and further undercut the prices in a way nobody else is allowed to.

The earlier grain debacle was sort of similar, in that it allowed dumping it at greatly reduced costs, while also being exempt from the usual food safety/quality regulations, which as you might imagine is not great. Of course, Poland being Poland, they played it in the least diplomatic way possible.

These regulation-wavering initiatives, while probably passed in good faith, really tend to impact neighboring countries the most - while the idea sounds great in that it offers economic support for no direct expenditure, in practice the costs have to be borne by CEE economies. It's hard to appraise in terms of raw numbers, but at the very least it checks out in principle. And of course that stirs some unpleasant sentiments of the exploitative West dumping the problem on the East, a region that already tends to feel as second-class member states. It's not easy to regulate this kind of support propertly, as it's inherently forcing a competitive advantage, but then on the other hand one cannot just say "lmao, just become fully EU-compliant in a couple of weeks during wartime to the point where you don't need special treatment anyway".

But since this is a repeat drama, hopefully some talks are being held to develop some somewhat rationalized angle.

The new Morawiecki government has lost the vote and is effectively over. As I understand it, we are now waiting until tomorrow for Tusk's expose and vote. Constitutional fuckery and feet dragging by the president is expected. The Constitutional Tribunal has started earlier today by ruling that a series of fines given out to Poland by the EU for not maintaining the rule of law and a conflict with Czechia over a power plant in the south of Poland are unconstitutional.

Honestly I was always really opposed to the thing where being "left-wing" in Poland just means obsesively anticlerical, but after 8 years of PiS... yeah, any politician who goes to church can automatically go gently caress themselves and I don't trust a single word out of their mouths.

Braun was milking the Sejm stream popularity in the last few days. Apparently four million people tuned this morning? He realized he will never get so many eyes on him and was using every opportunity to get to the speakers' stand. It was hilarious because he ran out of things to say on day three and the menorah attack is his only chance or best idea to stay in the limelight. I hope he gets his immunity stripped and he gets prosecuted for assault, as he sprayed a lady trying to stop him in the face.

Interesting twist to the Braun situation - since he used a chemical extinguisher to spray a lady in the face, he’s liable to being prosecuted for assault. Hołownia already said his immunity will be take a way and the prosecutor’s office has been notified of a crime.

While the court case can languish for a year or two, being under prosecution is apparently grounds enough to be excluded from the Sejm proceedings for the duration.

I was going to say it seems wild, but not unexpected, that doing this doesn't automatically exclude you from the Sejm. And was wondering whether the difficulty in punishing a sitting member is a holdover from Communism or a reaction to it.

But it's not just Poland. In Australia this old bitch kept being racist to another member. Telling him stuff like to 'go back to your country' and such. First she backtracked and claimed it had nothing to do with his skin colour but that if he keeps pointing out flaws he must not believe Australia is great enough already and therefore he can't feel from there at heart. Then she switched to doubling down, defending herself that in her day they used to say worse things about 'these kinds of people' and that millions of Australians feel the same way but are afraid to say anything. Last I heard they could only censure her and temporarily withhold her having an active microphone for a few sessions each time she did it.
