What was the Day Before supposed to be, anyways? I had never heard of it before, then all of a sudden I'm being bombarded by youtube videos about how "It's a scam and always has been" as though this was some long-running think I was supposed to have heard about before a week or two weeks ago.

It was supposed to be an overhyped, over-produced, feature-reduced DayZ clone.
Instead it turned out to be an underhyped, under-produced, feature-reduced Escape from Tarkov clone.

Try to picture a man in his 60s who has been obsessed with an unreleased video game for over a decade.

There's also some complex pathology involved. He has intrusive obsession issues — with his fixative subject ending up being this game project.

I guess that's ok in the sense that you usually see this kind of fixative anxiety resolved with things like stalking other people, committing to a conspiracy community, or ending up in a cult. Might be better overall to have it directed at this game project. Possibly even cheaper, even at tens of thousands of dollars of poo poo promises

Without resorting to further armchair pseudodiagnosis (really nobody's going to be able to tell you what gave his personality the susceptibility to this, unless he's been open about various personal neurodivergencies) it's pretty likely that the posting we see is a compulsive act, that anyone challenging the greatness of the game OR his authority as a self-assumed insider-level expert in the game will create mental discomfort that he can only resolve by biting back at it. He will probably have difficulty functioning if he (or the game) have been slandered in a way he feels compelled to respond to recently. Actually.

This sounds like the CIG development process of reading posts.

I guess you'd also have to close both windows and then open up an entirely different website that gives your computer a virus and it crashes to really make it a complete analogy.

Kings need not raise their voices to be heard

quote:

I don't think we should equate praise for team members by their managers who get to present that work as 'self praise'. They are acknowledging and appreciating the work of others in their teams, that's not marketing, that's morale building. I think people would be surprised at how compartmented feature work is, CIG employees only know the features they are working on, they learn just as much about the project's overall progress via these presentations as we do.

The work is for us, it's for that unique partnership this particular developer has with it's community that is unlike any other. The level of trust in the development teams the members of this community has shown over the years is unprecedented. You're equating pre-sale market hype to them telling us.. that thing you already gave us the money to make and all the time you put in spreading the word, we're making it for you. There's a subtle difference. It is 'ours' in a way that just doesn't exist in other game development projects. You might have played every GTA game there has been but you have no sense of ownership of GTA 6. In English 'you' and 'your' can be plural, you can use it in place of 'everyone's' or 'y'all'.

People under-estimate the power this community has over the project. Normally when a game developer announces that a project is feature complete, or ceases development on the game engine or features for that game project the employees know they are likely going to be part of a cost-cutting exercise to maximise profits for the investors. How often do we hear about mass lay-off's with other game development companies? Can you imagine what the community response would be to CIG announcing mass lay-off's of the development teams? They wouldn't tolerate it, and Chris well knows it. All the employees at CIG know it. It's the level of commitment to the project that this community brings that means they don't have think of their work as temporary, their triumphs are our triumphs, their setbacks are our setbacks. We (and CIG) don't think of the team members as disposable, that is unique in the gaming industry.

Why is this project so different? Why so much negative press from those who have no investment in the project? What's their beef if they don't lose anything? Why would the gaming press have a negative attitude to an enthusiastic community of gamers with a passion for a gaming project?

If you were a 'money man' who's bank account depends on game developers coming to you cap in hand asking for money to make a game, and how they make that game, how long it takes to make, directly affects your bank account how would you feel about a team of game developers telling you 'We don't need your money, we'll go directly to the gamers for the support we need to make this game project happen'.

If you were a marketing company who gets significant revenue (it's a billion dollar industry) from game development companies to market their games how would you feel about a game developer who says 'We aren't going to pay marketing companies to spread the word about our game project, our community will do that for us because they want the game we want to make, and we'll include them directly in the process of that game project'. No exclusive articles for the gaming magazines you have part ownership in that drive up ad revenue from gamers eager to know about the game they dream about.

If you were an investor with part ownership of a game development company, and part ownership of the gaming magazine that gets advertising revenue on new exclusive game reveals of the game your gaming company is making, and you have shares in the marketing company that specialises in marketing games in the fastest growing industry there is, CIG and this community have just cut you out of the loop entirely, and their collective output is putting your billion dollar per year revenue game companies to shame. In this new gamer / developer paradigm you don't make a penny profit from those gamers who now see your games as distinctly outdated and lacking features that technology allows. If you're an investor in the gaming industry generally with fingers in all the pies you can make sure that no one game development company upsets the apple cart. Game developers always have to come to you, gaming press and marketing always have to accept your output no matter how meager as though it was the best thing since sliced bread, and gamers always have to buy from you... and here comes this disruptive community of gamers and developers giving you the middle finger and telling you 'We can do better without you, thanks'.

I do agree that a couple of them tried to use the typical hype language / style approach you find in gaming generally, and it gave me a wry smile to see that it generally didn't get the response it normally gets at such industry events. I think that came from a sense of collective triumph after years of hard work rather than marketing hype. We show our appreciation by our level of support and engagement, not generally by being overly effusive at public events to the point you wonder if they have paid actors in the crowd.

When we give a standing ovation it's because we fully understand the technical challenges the development team have overcome to bring that 'miracle tech' to us, and what's more they know it, they know they are talking to the most knowledgeable crowd of gamers in the gaming industry. The whole reason this community and project exists the way it does is because we can smell gaming industry hype bullshit a mile off, that's why this project had to be different. When Paul Reindell finished his server meshing presentation he thanked the community and Chris Roberts for trusting his team to make it happen, when you know that in normal game development the business suits who invest in game development for a profit would never have that level of trust in their development teams you understand why it means so much, without this unique partnership it would never have happened.

I love how no matter what they can't help but compare SC to the latest game receiving hype. Starfield, GTA 6... they're so jealous their precious space game isn't getting similar attention.

Then of course they pick apart those games 'challenging' them, using those bugs as excuses to why SC bugs aren't "that bad", etc.

It's really interesting to see this kind of mentality centred entirely around a video game.
