If you give it to an Elite or Solo baddie with extra Structure, it can even turn back on between 'phases'.

The Specter specifically kinda sucks to fight without a counter because with its high native agility its highly resistant to the most likely-equipped soft counter to invisibility: frag grenades. See also its good evasion. Specters also have just enough HP that its tedious to try to chip it down with Reliable damage, especially considering you have to un-hide it before you can even shoot at it.

Amusingly the perma invisibility also makes it resistant to Tracking Bug, which on paper is specifically an invisibility counter.

I put in the first Specter as a T2 Veteran on like...mission 4? The players were not amused, although IIRC it went down to a lucky crit from the Nelson on like its third try at stabbing it. Generally avoided them since.

bewilderment posted:

My only real complaint was the enemy variety in each of its missions so that it didn't feel like you got a solid sense of the enemy's tactics.

By comparison for Dustgrave, you generally fight each given enemy faction twice, so you always know generally what to expect the second time. The gang uses the same general profiles as the arena fight. The horrors are the same-ish in all three fights other than the boss. The Talons are unique both times, but the second time you know how spec-ops works and the final battle is a victory lap anyway.

My theory for 'learning factions' goes like:

1.) You want players to be able to learn an opponent by fighting it, then be able to apply that knowledge to their benefit. Therefore, specific enemy types should either be encountered numerous times, or they should be tough targets where players fight them over multiple turns. This principle should apply both within missions and across them - give players a chance to build their mechs in accordance with the lessons they have learned. If they are fighting completely new enemies every single mission, they cannot engage in counter-building. (For example... taking invisibility counters.)

2.) You don't want to overload either players or yourself with too many mechanics in a given encounter. Therefore you don't want too great a variety of Classes in a given fight; ideally, 3-4. Template variations OK.

2A.) You also don't want too little variety in a fight. This is a big danger in boss fights; it's not hard to accidentally make one of your players totally useless by slapping on an Ultra trait that directly counters that player. But it can apply to regular fights too. If you field mostly all the same unit, then players who aren't good against that unit just get the joyful experience of getting owned. This isn't just a variety concern. 'Oops All Assaults' is a GM-fail meme for a reason.

Generally, I've ended up giving factions a roster of 4-5 mainline classes. I then field a selection of 2-3 of the mainline classes, often mixing in uniques or specialists to spice up specific encounters. Having several of the same mech in a fight biases the fight somewhat, which is a positive lets specific players show off their capabilities. It also means that NPCs don't usually get murdered without even a chance to show off what their mechanics are. But since there's still a variety of enemies in the fight, player mechs that struggle against a given NPC in an encounter still have other targets to go after.

Using smaller rosters also lets me spend a lot more time making the mech art look good which is important because i am not an artist. I am just a man who figured out the basics of how layers work.

Also if you take the extra time to predefine some factional units ahead of time for your original campaigns, it makes it easier to prep a more improvised campaign where you don't necessarily need to handcraft every fight. Instead when it's natural for the players to hit Faction X you have some prepped Faction X enemies to just pull into an encounter and, I dunno, maybe you'll through in an Elite Ronin for funsies, for example.

Agree Fade Generator (disable Invis on damage) is fine, both rewarding bringing direct Invisibility counters while still permitting soft counterplay through team coordination, but permanent Invisibility on beefy enemies is game warping in kind of a bad way - rather than a challenging sitrep puzzle, it's the sort of party comp stress test that leads to trauma building.

Certainly doesn't help that Specters are also one of the deadliest NPC classes on top of this and their Boost+Hide bullshit.

Hilariously I just got through Solstice Rain fight 3 in the last game and a player got hit by the Specter there for something like 20 damage at LL0. It would have been very bad except for Custom Paint Job activating so he only ended up taking something like 3 damage before spending a Reaction, a Barrage, Initiative, and Overcharge throwing literally everything at this guy to kill him before he could hide again.

I very rarely see custom paint job activate but when it does it is consistently for the wildest possible hits.

Beacon uses Lancer as a base to do kind of a Final Fantasy vibe with it.
ICON by one of the Lancer devs is currently in development and is also kind of a Final Fantasy vibe but is significantly more divergent from Lancer's base (other than sharing a game designer and the mixnmatch classes I wouldn't even necessarily call it a Lancerlike) and is trying to incorporate a lot of lessons learned, such as 'you should still do damage on a miss' and 'flying with height tracking is bullshit, you are now either just flying or not-flying'.

You can probably squeeze in the almost full wording for brace, "taking half damage in exchange for being able to do one quick action and nothing else next turn".

In 90% of cases choosing to brace is not a great option anyway.

Yes, I foresee Brace as only being used to prevent massive damage or total destruction. I think I can cram in the final free line space to add a second row of text for this:

"Gain RESISTANCE to all damage, burn and heat from an attack and +1 Difficulty to incoming attacks until the
end of your next turn, at the cost of all reactions and taking only one QUICK ACTION next turn. 1/round"

I posted this to the Lancer subreddit and they noticed I had "ARCHING" instead of "ARCING" and it got me thinking of a mission where a smart weapon becomes an arch-villain.

The HA Arthur looks like an interesting frame and might be the first third-party frame I'd allow in a campaign. Not the Avalon Generator though, "your whole party becomes Intangible" is the kind of thing that breaks games.

Intangibility is just such an odd state. One of my Dustgrave players ran a Calendula (Minotaur alt frame from KTB), and in the final bossfight she locked the boss and one of her own teammates in Ghost Thunderdome. Said teammate was in a Madrigal suit and the final boss was literally a god-to-be, so we got treated to the sight of a dismounted pilot taking on a massive towering abomination amidst the gray mists of the Firmament, and winning.

Lancer Status Tabs for Printing

I made these to help me and my table keep track of the various statues and conditions as we learn the game. I had them printed on glossy cover paper that provides rigidity and resilience as they'll be handled frequently. You can put them on top of paper stand-ins or beside the units on the table. It only cost me a few dollars to print the 3 pages at my local copy shop.

I didn't bother making one for "Prone" as we'll just tip over the mini to represent that.
COMP/CON Icon Markers from Batvision were used to make these.

It's up already on the Lancer Resource Hub & Pilot.net Resrouce hub. The link to the PDF can be found on this post.

One of our players dropped out so we only have two players and a GM, so our GM's allowed us to have a rotating mercenary slot for an NPC mech to round out our numbers. In one combat, when she couldn't target anything meaningfully, we had the NPC Bolster one of the PCs once. It didn't really make a difference in the end, but she sure did it.

Amechwarrior

Yeah, I was lazy and just pasted everything across the page instead of mixing types across a column. I probably could have saved a page cutting down on the lesser used statues.

I don't think I'll ever need more than 1 Down and Out or Bolstered, but it's easy to print. For $3 and change at my local print shop, I think it's a pretty good deal to just have more tokens then I'll ever need.

I'll have my DM screen posted in a few weeks. I got the prints at the same time, but waiting for DnD to finish before I mount them to the GM screen.

So me and one of the other players got to talking things over, I happened to mention the Enkidu-Lancaster Schoolbus build, and now they're seriously interested in riding along on their Raleigh. My GM's more or less given their blessing, just warning that it would be suicidally dangerous.

It's all fun and games until the Bombards show up. (Bombard damage scales up with how grouped up their targets are.)

Realistically the issue is more of a social one;t you're all wedding your movement to what one person wants to do, which can be fun for a bit but presumably people will want to do their own thing eventually. Some defenders have similar issues where they want people to stay in their defenses but people are like 'nah'.

For me it's primarily an action economy/opportunity cost problem; it's a QA to get on and there are very many things that can knock you off, even without getting into the NPCs that can punish clustering via AoE. The MULE being an Enkidu adds a further complication if the passenger wishes to disembark and move off.

Generally, MULE payoff requires an ongoing gameplan that really abuses the full mobility of the mount, else you can achieve similar results through Cable Winch or judicious application of Warp Grenades. It's a very fun system to see in action, though.

I knew a guy who was a designer at Wizards back before the current enshittified era and they had an explicit phase in their game design lifecycle called "finding the fun" where they would constantly trial different flavors of mechanics and interactions to try to identify the ones that got the test players most engaged.

Lancer really, really nails that. The resolution engine isn't particularly innovative in any way and there are the usual sharp edges, but the entire rule set is just packed end to end with things that drive player engagement. Modular abilities that get people excited before they even put their minis on the map, overcharging, core powers, those high-risk high-reward choices that make recent versions of D&D feel like eating plain oatmeal even if the core rules themselves are pretty similar in many ways.

I think the basic level of engagement and enjoyment with the rules in this game is just so high that it has powered my own vtt game for like two years and it's never felt like a chore for people to show up, including me.
