I asked this a few posts ago but is there any chance the damages will be reduced by state law? I was racking my brain to remember a case where it was quickly reduced. I want to say Amber Heard, but apparently it only dropped from 13M to 10M. Am I crazy? I could swear this happens. I know the amount that Rudy can pay won't change, but I'm wondering if there can be a change to how much he owes.

After his araignment in Atlanta Rudy was seen walking into a bail bond place that's connected to Buckhead Towing (not in buckhead!). If he'd gone to Spondivits afterwards it would have been a Young Jeezy song. Dude is broke broke https://x.com/BrendanKeefe/status/1694456518974767600?s=20

selec posted:I’m doing fairly well in this economy, and it still loving sucks! Health care sucks, yet I pay a lot for it; managed to pay off my own student loans, but lord knows I have plenty of friends still feeling strangled by them. This, at least, is what I'm looking forward to...What America thinks of itself now, and how the people who live there tend to act now, is far from the only way to run a world, let alone perceive one. I paid off my loans too, but it cost me my health and about a decade of my life: and on the way I saw enough of what it's like to be at the center that your vibes feel close to my experiences. I really didn't see much besides petty squabbling, and crammed schedules, and leaders dissociated from any real contact with their people on the ground. No clear mission, no clear idea of what it means to succeed: just vibes. It might be getting to the point where folks who want to govern are forgetting how to talk honestly to each other at all, "without fear of punishment and without hope of reward." Or afraid enough of it to send away people who do want to talk honestly. There's no grand project to take on because - at least in my sight - the projects that are needed are not grand. selec posted:Biden might not be our von Hindenburg, but he’s likely to be viewed similarly to him and many other examples of people raised and trained to leadership under the old regime being unable or unwilling to adapt to what came after. Think of your classic “last few leaders before poo poo hit the fan” scenario, I think he’ll be in that category. Vibes for vibes: I figure recognizing this as a possibility that may yet prove true, also means recognizing that, if it is true, some other political entity will come after. I find that Donald's politics have got vitality, I think, precisely because he's got his fingers gripped on a vital truth, and an old one: that the American state never completely reckoned with how it came to be. The stories never resolved, even if we like to say they have. Do we reject all the wretched things our ancestors did to the First Nations, or do we think it was cool and good? Or do we think there are ways to heal that hurt, both for the people who were hurt and the land that was hurt? Do we think slavery is bad, actually? Does being poor mean you deserve it; and does being rich mean you deserve it? What does it mean to be Christian? The implied answers to these sorts of questions seem, to me, to be standing behind what political orthodoxy is -- at least, where it isn't just about keeping business-as-usual going. And in turn the stories behind those answers - the guts behind the talking points, the heavy things that can't be spoken of without bringing someone's emotions to fever pitch - are the factors that shape who we are and how we think of ourselves. The choices and the true things we don't often want to look at, for shame, or for fear. Donald gets it. I wish he didn't, because it would mean he isn't as dangerous as he is. It's the story that lives or dies: and the story I fear he's enacting is one I really wish we'd managed to finish with in the 1860s.

Following up on my immigration chat from a few days ago: CBP doesn't like holding people for more than 72 hours (ideally less) much more than those people like being held, and while I still couldn't find statistics, they seem to assert that post-2021 it doesn't really happen. I was able to find ICE detention stats and while a deep dive is going to have to wait till I'm not on phone, I was able to land at least one immediate takeaway. Typical length of stay is 45 days, typical length for people who pass a credible fear review is 70. This seems a bit rear end backwards unless the review takes a bit and/or they can just throw people out who fail it. So, possible. Gonna need to poke around for numbers to guess what proportion of immigrants spend time in ICE detention. Alternatives to detention were something the Biden admin was making strong noises about in 2021 so I'd like harder numbers on that, as a detention-disliker. https://www.ice.gov/detain/detention-management stats document is at bottom of page

I know it's been a busy news day, but have we already covered the adventures in the Senate Hearing Room, allegedly filmed by Dick Durbin's intern? Because it's all over Twitter/X but I can't find any real news stories about it. I love that a ton of conservative pearl-clutchers are spending their Friday night watching gay porn...as usual.
