I've witnessed a sailor get sea sickness while on a pakistani fishing dhow in the northwest indian ocean. Well, I witnessed in that I watched via camera and later infrared while on watch while the vbss team was over. He was very clear that the rocking was making him seasick and that he was going to poo poo himself. Unfortunately his only option was to use the head of the dhow, which is literally a hole in the brow. The infrared picked up the poo as it flew out of him.

He started drooling all over the place when he got on board apparently. I was actually furious for a moment because I found spit on the deck and I was in the process of yelling at a group of sailors for being disgusting pigs when one of the sailors said "uh it was the dog" ( that I didnt know was on board).
A few minutes later the dog and his handler walks by and the ship started rocking a bit and he started whimpering and just poo poo himself. The loving handler just looked at it and said sorry and walked off the ship. We scrambled for a dust pan because the 4-star was about to come on board. Thankfully he didnt poo poo on the carpet.

I think that MBAs are useful, in case you are looking for an answer to the question of "Is lightpole a total fucking idiot".
Houthis have been launching rockets at ships in the Bab al-Mandeb and now all the major shipping companies have said they won't be transiting.

Most Christmas stuff is already on the shelves but BP will probably be an issue, as well as anything going to the 5th fleet. I think APMM can probably just increase speed and go round the Cape with the slack in their schedule but the newer ships might have trouble with the speed. MSP carriers are refusing to transit even with USN escort. Panama canal has had low water levels due to a drought so ships are already pushing schedules to go round the horn.

Have they hit anything and are they launching anything strong to hurt anything more than a fishing dhow?

Sounds like we may need to deliver a bunch of freedom and get some new 100 year leases on Yemeni territory.

It's important to remember that there isn't ever some singular entity constructing machinations, even in large hierarchical structures that try to focus it (like the DoD), much less within loose confederations such Houthi rebels.

It may be contrary to some big picture Houthi goals since a common purpose will likely start healing the divide that started to form between Saudi Arabia and the US, but for the individual Capo on the ground, the people that do this are go getters, are getting results, and have beaten back the economic militias of the anti-islamist west. To their audience, these victories lend credibility to further victories even if potentially strategically risky, and that yields support from benefactors, advancement among peers, recruits and morale for the Houthi Team.

And this might just look like the best time to take that risk, so it's not being policed. Anti Israel and Anti Hamas sentiments are booming. Intervention in Yemen will read to the American people as American intervention for Israel--or could be bent that way, which can paralyze an administration. Many westerners want to keep their sensitive parts out of that beehive. Despite intense proclamations each way from those within and around government, the current White House team and its leading competitor in 2024 are competing to see who can be the most out of the Middle East, whether it's a pivot to the Pacific or protectionism.

America may be perceived as unlikely as any time in recent memory to seize the initiative here, and a good opportunity to earn some home field wins. I think that could be a dangerous misstep, but I'm not a Houthi terrorist.

I was curious about this as well. Suez is a big source of funds for them and this is really loving with that. Egypt went hard when Bedouin launched some RPGs 10 years ago.

Christmas shipping is over. Carriers should have plenty of slack in the box trade to go around the Cape of Good Hope. I would think there might be a small impact that quickly smooths out for that. European consumers shouldn't notice much?

The issue would be tanker trade since that's entirely different and there's less slack and fewer hulls available to move around. Same with US military cargo, there's a very limited number of MSP vessels and realignment might be difficult. It also should be a bit of an eye opener since the entire US military strategy revolves around those ships moving.

They punch above their weight when it comes to antipiracy. What they can do against Houthi attacks against shipping is a broader question (pretty much nothing), but they're pretty good at ruining Somali pirates being opportunistic and attacking shipping transiting the area of the Horn of Africa.

That's actually a perfectly serviceable anti-piracy platform. Maybe not so effective against missile and drone strikes, but it's good for interdicting small, fast boats, and picking up people in need of a rescue. It certainly has a role to play.

I didn't mean to specifically call out the one ship I linked to, but to the whole list of ships, and was thinking about air defence and strike roles.

If the coalitions efforts include antipiracy efforts, that does make sense.

His testimony locked up a bunch of captains and whatnot, so yeah there's probably more juice to squeeze. Also everything about this fiasco is a huge embarrassment for the navy and USG overall, so they're not just gonna let him walk away.

If it helps us pull Venezuela a little closer to our sphere of influence, even better.

The Captain has been doing this everyday for a period of time to have family/spouse/loved ones put in a request to have their junior Sailor to the bridge, give them a cookie, and have them sit in the CO chair. It is funny for this one as she responded exactly how most people would if being brought to the bridge
