I was curious about '20 vs '21 - "The one-night counts are conducted by CoCs nationwide and occur during the last week in January of each year." So a week after Biden was sworn in.

So Trump had solved homelessness and Biden brought it back?

I was listening to last week's episode of This American Life and the last segment was about the border. What was unexpected was that it was about how the border workers expected Biden to reverse Trump's policies and didn't despite explicit campaign promises to do so (even playing the clip of him saying it), how once the administration wrote its own policy it was worse than Trump's, and featured quotes like "The Democrats don't call them 'shithole countries'. They treat them that way but they don't say it."

When NPR and TAL is making GBS threads on the dems you know their prospects are dim

lol that poll is so loving dumb

the first question, is that going off of the inflation numbers that don't include food or gas or housing? And like not everyone got a new job this year, I got a decent raise but it's already been eaten up by increases in insurance premiums, property taxes, repaying student loans etc

the second question is about the rate of inflation. no one gives a poo poo if the rate that inflation changes is positive or negative, prices are still going up you ding dongs

the third one, yeah no poo poo that's what happens when housing prices skyrocket. on paper I'm much wealthier now because the value of my house is inflated but it's harder to afford things today than it was in 2019.

the last two are completely subjective lol

Even if inflation had completely stopped, the complaint is that the prices are too high now.

While this is all true I'd also mention that yes, I was far wealthier after the pandemic than before, in other words I got wealthier from, let's just say 2016 to 2020. The weird thing is that from 2020 to 2023, I got less wealthy...

Using that metric, I wonder if there is some choice I could make to make things in the future more like 2016-2020 and less like 2020 to now?

spacemang_spliff posted:

Actually the third one isn't subjective at all. It's literally math, and someone on a median income can afford a better lifestyle today than a year ago because median income increased 4.5% vs a 3.2% inflation rate. However the two previous years, 2020-2021 and 2021-2022, median income dropped 2.2 and 2.3% respectively and in those two years inflation was about 8 and 7 percent respectively.

So yes, over the last single year those on a median income are better. Over the last three years, those on a median income are far, far worse off.

Of course the fourth one starts at the tail end of the GHWB recession, and most of the gains were from 1993-2007.

I am practically a single issue voter and my issue is housing affordability. Biden has failed miserably to bring the cost of housing down. Democrats have been failing at this for decades.

It's such a big problem that even the HIV foundation has made rent control an issue they campaign and donate towards in the past few years -and in response Dem operatives are writing hitpieces about "And yet the foundation is also a landlord, curious"

lmao, life style improvement is literally subjective and not math at all ya dingus because it is based on the subjective concept of CPI in that article.

That 3.2% inflation is a number that is not objective. It is based on assumptions of quality adjustments which may or may not be true, and it is weighted in a way that is 100% subjective and has changed over the time. You are also making the common mistake of confusing what CPI is measuring. CPI is trying to measure the relative amount of money being spent relative to goods produced. It is not trying to measure the ability of someone to buy the things they require or the quality of life of what someone can afford.

This isn't even true, though, because the things that make up larger portions of spending for the working class (namely housing and food) have had their price increase at a higher rate than is reflected by the official inflation rate (and thus factored into "real wage" calculations).
