Escape From Tomorrow is such an interesting behind the scenes concept wasted on an absolutely dogshit script and horrible performances.

Mentioned it before but I'm still stunned in this day and age that Disney didn't push through another 20 year public domain extension.

I know the internet has collectively groaned at Disney properties entering the public domain and becoming terrible slasher movies but I welcome it. Make that Steamboat Willy slasher. Make the Disney corporation uncomfortable using their iconography.

I think the iconography might be made more uncomfortable just through having more people actually watch all of Steamboat Willie; Mickey is kind of sadistic in it

I assume Disney will be pulling the same tricks the Doyle estate tried, and sue the pants off of any production that has Mickey doing anything besides steering a steamboat.

But, like, when the only permissible thing you can do with Mickey Mouse is “have him make music through bringing pain to animals” then a different kind of problem emerges for his brand

I mean still a more interesting character than modern Mickey Mouse. Other than a very recognizable head shape what the hell even is modern mickeys "character"?

Well, that’s why I’m interested to see how it all develops. Disney has protected the more anodyne version of Mickey, but nobody is especially invested in him— and there is enough in Steamboat Willie to create a subversive and uncomfortable version of him, which many people will certainly try and do

Okay so that's like the best animation I've seen out Disney in quite a while. I'd still say the character of mickey is pretty basic, but for this story he really doesn't need much, and most importantly he is fun in it and appropriately moves the story along in fun way.

But yeah that really was a great premise for an animated short executed really well. Hope they do a lot of those shorts as it's all good to see animators getting to have some fun.

With Danny Trejo as the leader of the pińatas! The shot of the kids eating his candy guts from his still-living upper body is like something from a zombie movie.

Speaking of which, there's another of those shorts where Goofy is literally a rotting zombie.

Those Mickey shorts get real weird sometimes too, like one where Donald and Daisy pretend to be sick to get out of doing group activities with Mickey and Minnie constantly just to get some time to themselves. But Mickey and Minnie come over to take care of them, and are basically treated like horror movie villains.

Sadly I can't find this episode on YouTube or whatever, but it's interesting that Disney was willing to do stuff like this

Original Mickey was kind of a rascal so it’s a return to form in some ways. He got softened up a lot when he made the jump to corpo mascot. Some of the softening up was good since he could be too much of a dick to Pluto for instance.

Yeah having that section go full zombie movie was a great choice and they pulled it off really well. Some wonderful shots in their. The mix of vivid colours vs zombie movie shots is just great for comedic contrast.

I saw this in a theater. But it wasn’t attached to A Goofy Movie, which I didn’t see in theaters, and have never seen more than 20 minutes of. So I was racking my brain where I possibly could have seen it. Wikipedia says it was shown before George of the Jungle in ‘97 which I distinctly remember seeing in the theater. There was a short lived moral panic regarding that movie because it was feared dumb kids would run into trees and other objects at full speed imitating George.
