Gaiden's hostesses are still subbed, since those are real clips. Kiryu's lines ARE dubbed though, which is funny in its own way.

Awano, man, they really went all in on this guy, so loving sleazy, I love how awful he is.

Kiryu walking out the door, chef kiss moment.

I know he's probably a dead man walking but, I hope he loves through all of these games being an absolutely abhorrent piece of poo poo because whoever they mocapped him from is so loving good

I just finished Gaiden, that last scene was really powerful. Also, is the implication that Hanawa knew about the Taichi Suzuki alias because he was one of Kiryu's passengers? I couldn't tell if it was supposed to be that or him just having done his own research.

e: There's also the possibility that Hanawa will be in Infinite Wealth and I'm not supposed to know yet, so maybe it's just that

Y5/Gaiden- He shares a voice actor with Yu Morinaga from Y5, Aizawa's buddy that kinda disappeared from the game, we were told he was killed offscreen but it seems perhaps not. He was also one of a pretty limited amount of people who knew about that alias.

The current popular theory is that he's Morinaga, who "dies" off screen in a very hand-wavy way in 5, and also is the same VA as Hanawa.

Edit, beat to the punch

The great thing about this theory is that with the engine change it's not clear if it's supposed to be like a surgery change or if he's just the same guy wearing glasses and Kiryu truly was fooled by that the way he thinks people are fooled by his Joryu disguise

In the finale of yakuza 6. Pacing felt off to me, like right as I hit my groove with the game it was starting to wrap up the story. Anyways I'm just running around in a funeral suit doing a bunch of the remaining content. Overall I'd give it like an 8.5. Good characters and sub stories, only passable mini games, combat was fairly satisfying but kinda shallow.

there should be a scene where hanawa takes the glasses off to clean them or something and his model temporarily pops back to the Y5 one before reverting once the glasses are back on

I was playing some Yakuza 0 on the new Steam Deck (where it looks and runs brilliantly in full 90fps), and the scene where Awano shoots the random lady is definitely as weird as I remembered it, mainly because Kiryu barely reacts to a civilian just being murdered in cold blood right in front of him. His reaction is basically "that was not cool. I want nothing to do with this."
This post has stuck in my head for ages and I started laughing to myself because you are totally right about that scene. The gangster shooting that lady and then she dies? Weird and bad vibes!

But the objectively insane part where Kuze on a motorcycle tries to run down Kiryu in the sewer? It makes total sense for everyone involved and is loving awesome

Oh hell yeah, Zhao and Joon-gi are back! I thought I saw the latter in the Giant Shark fight but I wasn’t sure, and he’s pretty cool in an understated straight man way. Plus having one of the only non-DLC gun-elemental attacks. God, YLAD had a lot of balance issues, but I can’t hate a battle system with gun-elemental attacks.

I think my biggest concern is how well the old party members will be integrated into the story. I'm worried they might either struggle to make them relevant (it seems like Nanba might end up being the "exposition on Kiryu's cancer" guy, for example) or just have them hang around awkwardly commenting on things like half of Class 7 in the later Cold Steel games. At least with Saeko we know Ichiban proposed to her (though I loosely get the impression that the new woman might be a new love interest?).

I'm still happy they're returning, though. Particularly Zhao, I love that guy. I'd rather them return and not have much to do than not return at all. The worst case scenario would have been if they had ended up like Sayama after Y2, so I'm very happy they seem to be committing to keeping them around, even the least relevant ones like Zhao.

Watching a stream of Japanese PS1 games and there’s a Cardcaptor Sakura game that has two music tracks Sega used in Yakuza 0.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=pTAatDOcwSI&t=1h16m30s
(Gameplay starts around 1:16:30 if the timestamp doesn’t work)

The intense pizza substory music plays during gameplay and the Pocket Circuit victory fanfare after clearing the level. My wife was trying to find out a connection to the Yakuza composer somehow. It’s not even like Sega took them as inspiration, they’re the exact same songs. Typical asset reuse, smh.

That pizza thing is one of the great pieces for sure. So the lesson is they wrote the perfect song back in the 90s or so, makes sense to me. 90s anime OPs were off the chain.

I mean, they were dragging characters from game to game after they stopped being relevant before, which wasn't great, but I feel like the writing was always at the very least alright. I'd argue Saejima's journey through 5 is one of the worst ones for playable characters because it pretty much retells his chapter from 4, but even then, it's fairly entertaining.
It helps a lot that those guys are in your party and are your actual friends, so they don't even need to be there for plot. We've helped those people in 7, so even if they're here just for party chats about tomatoes or whatever, I'm down for it. It would be a little strange, but gently caress it, I love those guys. And hell, it definitely won't be as out of place as keeping the Florist for way too many games and then just never mentioning him in 6.

It would have been cool if they just had the Florist’s information surveillance network destroyed between games instead of just banishing him and Paradise to the Shadow Realm without any fanfare imo. I guess there’s the party boat in Gaiden to hit the same feels though, but I’d like a debauchery zone without slaves too.
