if anything I think the muddiness of where one god ends and another begins adds a great deal to the setting, makes it really feel like something the various more religiously inclined factions would actually get in a theological dispute over

Although his stories are interconnected in a sort of self-contained series dubbed "The Dark Coil," they're non-linear and work well on their own. There's a guide to them if you're interested.

Seconding Alpharius, I think Sanguinius' book is also good although it's not nearly as much of a story actually about Sanguinius as Alpharius is about Alpharius*. Perturabo's book is disappointing and basically paints him as a huge rear end in a top hat from the get-go rather than someone who developed into an rear end in a top hat as a result of the actions of people around him. Leman Russ' book is okay if you're super bored but honestly it doesn't really say anything that needed to be said, and I like Russ when he's written by Abnett or someone else skillful. Edit: Apparently I also read the Lion El'Jonson book but I cannot remember a single thing that happened in it. Very appropriate for the Dark Angels I guess. *This is a lie. Alpharius' book is not about Alpharius.** **It's about Omegon. Kylaer fucked around with this message at 01:14 on Dec 18, 2023 |

Dapper_Swindler posted:yeah. I need to read it. all the audible reviews seemed mixed but i trust this place. which of the primarch short books are good? Angron's is quite good in my opinion. The main characters are KHARN, and a group of old World Eaters/War Hounds who don't like the way the Legion has been going, and are trying to stop the experiments with the Butcher's Nails, with some flashbacks to Angron's time in the gladiator pits. This brings me to my point-I've written here before about how I want to see more atheists, heretics who aren't genestealers, and traitors-who-aren't-Chaos in BL books. After rereading the Dark Imperium trilogy, I have another character type to add: Unhappy Space Marines. There's s plot thread in books 2 and 3 of that series about a Primaris who really wanted to be an Ultramarine but ended up being assigned to the Novamarines instead. Maybe he didn't get enough extracurriculars or his Space Marine SAT wasn't high enough, they don't say. But the point is, most Space Marines in the novels are unhappy for one of two reasons: 1. They went through a Tragic Event and their battle-brothers are Dead. 2. They are on garrison duty/dealing with civilians/doing things that are not glorious battle. We need more Marines who don't like their chapter, or their traditions, or their leaders, or their doctrines, whatever. Maybe they hate their squad or their area of service, or they don't really like training for 15 hours per day. Maybe they learn to love those things, or they take action to change them, or they die with their complaints unvoiced and are then honored by the rituals they hate. There's also not enough interpersonal tension, especially in the 40k marines, there is some of this in the Heresy. Space Marines don't have romances but they still have FEELINGS. There should be intrachapter politics, jealousy over who gets the glory or the good assignments or whatever. Hell, there are probably space marines whose best friend is drifting away and is now better friends with some other guy. Maybe a chapter is now like 30% primaris, guys who served with RG and now want to change things, and there's tension over who's going to shape the new recruits, the new culture guys or the old ones. Maybe there's a Space Marine divorce and the chapter splits in half. Note: I'm not saying this needs to be ALL or even most of the stories in 40k. The majority of it should still be stoic space marines and faithful Catholic Space Nazis! And I know any of these books that get written will also have a whole bunch of bolter porn scenes, that's the nature of being background to a wargame. I just enjoy these kind of exceptions, and I wish they were like....10-15 percent more common.

You're right, but it's also sort of funny that's there's a canonical reason why modern marines are more boring than 30k marines. Part of the induction process of modern marines is a shitload of psycho-conditional and hypnotic indoctrination (though obviously this varies between chapters) which 30K legionaries just didn't get.

Space Marine conditioning is a fun thing to have in the canon when you're Ian Watson and you're wringing all of the psychosexuality out of it. But when that is de-emphasized it becomes trouble. Basically at some point Graham McNeil's Ultramarines novels became the default way to think about space marines, which is bad There's a reason a lot of the authors gravitate to using space marines as something for human characters to bounce off of, rather than trying to get any drama out of the marines themselves. But that only goes so far when they're the poster boys of the IP. I'll say there have been positive developments on this front with the new stuff. Yes we get the primaris marines' perspectives on assimilating into their chapters, but we also also get various flavors of resentment/paranoia/etc the firstborn feel toward their newfangled replacements As GW continues phasing out the old marine models from tabletop, BL authors will hopefully pounce on the opportunity to explore the concept of obsolescence as applied to belligerent transhuman war cultists PupsOfWar fucked around with this message at 10:27 on Dec 19, 2023 |

I mean if you're ride or die for Big E and find a source of supernatural power that seems unconnected to the warp it's probably easy to convince yourself you've discovered an aspect of His divine power through a misguided warp-bad-emp-good process of elimination, no matter how horrifying your newfound power turns out to be.

It’s never said that enuncia is totally unconnected to the warp, and the fact that slyte seems to be totally unaffected by it indicates that it probably is fundamentally a form of warp-power, just a particularly powerful and devastating form.

So, after I finished reading EotD2 and had just began reading Godblight, I wondered out loud in a post here why don't they just sit someone on the throne to let the Emperor come back to life as the perpetual he is, as an example the Grey Knight in Godblight named Crud who is mentioned as an incredibly powerful psyker, even compared to what we knew of Malcador. Someone here told me to continue reading Godblight, and, uh, this is probably the most pivotal 40k book written so far. It outdoes Guilliman and The Lions returning within two chapters. I am honestly surprised I hadn't seen it spoiled everywhere, in the Facebook groups, etc. Maybe everyone skipped this book or I was just lucky? In ending of Godblight, The Emperor is returning. He controls Matheiu and Guilliman for a portion, then Matheiu explains that the rift that opened when Cadia fell, the warp spilling out is healing and empowering The Emperor since he is a being of the warp. Something Abbadon kinda overlooked. I sat there dumbfounded that they let Guy Haley announce to the world The Emperor is almost ready to step off the throne and continue where he left off.

That's probably not what's gonna happen though, or it'll be very very bad. The Star Child is real and the Emperor doesn't have a chunk of his soul anymore. All his hope and compassion is gone so if he gets up like that it's gonna suck for everyone.

A regular psyker probably cannot take the Emperor's place on the Throne. Malcador was one of the most powerful psykers known aside from the Emperor and the effort of powering the throne destroyed him between when he sat down and Dorn rushed back with a dying Emperor to plug him in. I mean unless things are different ten thousand years later; there was some not insignificant time fuckery afoot during the Siege of Terra so Malcador might have been on the throne for centuries or something, plus had to contend with the attentions of the assembled Pantheon as well. There's also the problem that the throne is responsible for sealing off the portal to the webway and if it loses function, Terra suddenly faces an open chaos gate in the heart of the Imperial Palace. That gets ugly, fast... and this also hinges on someone knowing how to successfully connect a person to the Golden Throne in the first place. Nobody has done that in over ten millennia.
