The babies have graduated to outside!

We put them out last night after our two days of cold weather passed, locked in the hutch while the adults were out in the run. Earlier today I opened the door separating them and introductions went as well as could be expected.

Here's the initial intro:

https://i.imgur.com/c0AQFeY.mp4

That's Peanut Hamper stomping up to the door. She was PISSED that she couldn't go inside last night....

Tammy's great-grandchild was the brave one to venture outside first. Zapdos is surprisingly chill with the babies.

Here he is inspecting another of his new children:

But soon the rest of them came out to explore as well.

We also gave them some clippings scavenged from an xmas tree lot. It's great enrichment, plus an extra windbreak in this weather. This is just a good shot of Peanut enjoying them.

Zapdos was over the little ones pretty quickly, though....

Now it's chaos out there, but they'll settle down soon.

There's a rook outside my window right now who is interspersing his caws with a really good seagull impression. If I I can get a decent recording of it. I'll stick it up :)

Little bird story incoming.
Every morning when I let the dog out for a pee, there is almost always a little flock of sparrows waiting in the hedge for a morning snack of suet pellets. Since the weather got colder, a lone (european) robin has joined in. Normally, they hang back when there's sparrows about, but this robin is very brave and is happy to jump down and snag a pellet right from in front of a sparrow.

A couple of days ago, I ran out of pellets, so could only apologize to the waiting birds and head back inside. A few minutes later, I remembered that I'd left the door open and went back to close it. The sparrows were gone, but that one little robin was still waiting patiently for breakfast. Naturally that meant I had to find an alternative, but all I had to hand was some cheddar.
I threw down a few bits, and the robin hopped down to inspect them. After a lot of checking, he ate a bit, and then did this irritated 'Tsip tsip' sound, and bobbed at the cheese. Every bit he ate, he commented on and did his bob. The next day, still no pellets, but he ate his cheese without further comment. The third day, he just looked at the cheese and flew away.
Today, he was back and seeing that cheese was not popular, I got some bits of biscuit, and some shelled sunflower seeds instead. When I came back with them, he was standing in my front hall, having a little look around, so, not wanting to startle him, I waited til he was back on the doorstep, and threw out some biscuit crumbs and seeds.

They were deemed acceptable :3:

He's a very calm, confident little person, so it might just happen :).
He was back today and had some more sunflower seeds, there was some 'tsip tsip'-ing, but definitely less offended seeming than he was when it was cheese.
It's so drat hard to get suet pellets at the moment, everywhere is sold out :(

The sparrows are much less willing to try new stuff than this robin. When we switched from white suet pellets to pale pink ones, they wouldn't even try them for days.

This little guy is so polite, and so very serious.
Today, I saw them for the first time in a couple of days, and gave them the bit of beef dripping I had ready.
It was eaten in 2 seconds, and there was a LOT of 'tip tip'-ing from the nearby cedar, so I think it was greatly appreciated. From past experience, this Robin talks a lot when a food is either very bad or very good.
I gave them berry suet pellets for lunch. They were very dubious about the pinkness of the pellet, but after a bit of bobbing on my part, and verbal reassurance, they ate it.
I've heard that robins historically trailed around behind rooting animals, like wild boars, so they have a natural inclination to team up with other animals to find food.
Gardeners regularly find that robins will follow them around the garden to collect worms disturbed by the gardener.
Just to add to this already overlong post, robins have a big song, which is very cold and sweet, a 'tip tip' call, which has multiple meanings, from warning, to complaint, to basic commentary.
They also have an extremely secret, sweet song meant only for their mate. It's like their normal song but extremely quiet, you can only hear it if you are within about 10 feet of the robin.

I fuckin love robins.

Can confirm, I've got a whole bunch of little robins zooming around my garden doing just that. A constant shadow while working on anything in the garden.

I also witnessed the extremely secret song. It was a group of four robins, standing in a small circle, and three of them took turns singing this tiny tune for the fourth one. Anyone of the three whose "turn" it wasn't kept squirming impatiently, while the fourth just stood there, listening intently to the quiet little song. They were so focused on their task, they didn't notice me standing right next to them. But then again, they were most likely quite used to following me. Took me a bit to notice what they were doing.

The hopeful male robins had a tryout singing session to impress the female :3:
