Rules. Started with my favorite album cut and this version of Vampire is way better than the piano solo version she did on SNL. I get why she does that version but the instrumentation is so key to that song being as good as it is so having a full band and vocalists makes it way better naturally. And she breaks out the best ballad too.

edit: at this point I think she’s played all but two songs from GUTS live and publicly available. Just Pretty Isn’t Pretty and Logical remain. I love pretty isn’t pretty so I hope she plays it somewhere at some point. I know that’s not a popular opinion but at least one person agrees with me

This Tiny Desk is great. Agreed that this version of Vampire is far better than the SNL one. Her voice sounds fantastic here. And I love Pretty Isn't Pretty. Definitely one of the highlights of GUTS for me.

Also, can you use video tags next time please? Or at least put the title of the video in your post? I'm less likely to click on a YouTube link with no title/thumbnail :ohdear: If you're using Awful app, it's pretty easy to do.

Huh I didn’t even know that was a thing that didn’t work outside the app. Good to know.

I still feel like that version of Vampire is too restrained! The beat/drums is one of my fave parts of the song. I get that they have to be restrained a bit on a TDC though.

edit: Today show version (with the crowd singin' the cussy parts lol) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8xrX7JaXP6k

I'm usually all for stripped down versions of songs but this one really is perfect the way it is on the album

pretty isn’t pretty isn’t a bad song or anything it’s just compared to all Olivia’s songs that show off her particular voice that one feels like a more typical “beauty standards bad!!!!!” song that anyone could have written

I knew of her from Okay Cupid and loved the Pom-Poms stuff and literally did not know she'd put out any actual albums under her own name, so thanks very much for this.

Just a live video for it. The screams sound a little different and she takes a pause before "All the time, I'm grateful all the time" at the end.

He’s not the only person I’ve seen say that either, Diamond Axe Music on YT also had roughly the same opinion, although more “it’s not great” than “worst of the year worthy”. It’s rare that I just flat out disagree with someone’s opinion rather than saying “I understand what you’re saying but I’m able to look past it in ways that you aren’t” but I just don’t think that the writing is bad or that it’s anti-climactic or overperformed or whatever.

Haven't watched Todd's video yet but I'm already fuming at that take. I really just don't get how you can't at least be okay with that song.

The only thing I will say is that I think the production/arrangement is a big part of it, and the stripped-down performances do nothing for me. But that's true of a bunch of other good songs too.

EDIT: Also I'd be remiss not to echo the love for the Pat Finnerty video, it's way less tedious than you'd think an hour-long takedown of a song would be. One of the most naturally gifted comedic creators on YouTube by far.

It's me I'm one of the people who thinks Olivia Rodrigo's ballads are weak. Her ballads feel like I'm listening to musical theater. They lean hard on her wordy, hyper-specific lyrics - a trend that other young pop songwriters like Noah Kahan and Chappell Roan follow - and I find them lacking in melodies and hooks. It's a boring experience. Olivia's uptempo numbers, such as good 4 u and bad idea right?, suit her much better right now

It's a piece of JUNK!
I've watched the video now and it was a pretty good roast of the song's lyrics/vibe, but there's still no way in hell it's one of the worst hit songs of the year. It's music for teenagers so I don't really expect it to hit me with authenticity. It's just really fun to listen to. Its inclusion on the list is pure clickbait, which is fine, I know you kind of have to do that sometimes. But yeah, he's totally wrong.

I mean, production is a part of a song, and you change it, you change the song. Like, Beethoven’s Ninth played on armpit farts is going to sound different than with an orchestra, but no one is bold enough to let me have it!

Yeah I generally agree that her rockier/faster songs are better but Vampire is the main example for me of her theatricality really working. You can probably see me real-time in this thread originally saying “it sounds like it’s from a musical” as a negative and then realising it actually rules

I get where he's coming from. To me the song is boring when its slow and then still boring while being fast, the worst combination. I just don't think it has a hook that I like, which is generally what I look for in pop music. I think if anyone had released it as their first single, they wouldn't have a career.

Yeah, I really enjoyed Vampire. I lost Todd on “fame fucker” vs “star fucker.” Both terms work well, and it paints a slightly different picture of someone going after someone who isn’t quite a star and has just gotten some success.
