I'm a fucking lobster
There was some chat a few pages back about folks looking to collaborate... Does anyone want to actually try it? I'm looking for a guitar player or a few folks to kinda' just bounce poo poo around with and to try writing poo poo bigger than what I can manage by myself. My main thing right now is vocals, but have also been doing drums, bass and production stuff for forever..

I'm kinda' fuckin' desperate for some actual, real guitar riffs. Programming midi guitars makes me want to throw myself down a flight of stairs and not wanting to gently caress with it anymore is the bottleneck I'm sorta' stuck at right now with metal music. The vibe I had in mind is depressive/blackened death with maybe some doom sprinkled in, but am down with absolutely whatever.

Here's some isolated vocals from a really loving stupid thing I recorded this afternoon after getting way too high on THC infused cream soda...The low/gutterals at the end there are poo poo, but that whole take was weirdly fun to run through and I didn't want to slice the audio up. If anyone wants to gently caress with this, shoot me a PM I guess?

If all y'all could include what sub-sub-subgenre of metal your top 10 albums fall under that'd be great.

'Cos I wanna check poo poo out, but I wanna know what I'm getting into.

...

I mean slam is easy to spot 'cos the band name will be "hosed BY HAMMERS" and the album title will be: "I GOTS A HAMMER FOR A FACE" but yeah give us a hint.

My top 10 is not finalized yet as I relisten to everything chronologically at the end of the year and I’m only up to May, but these ones are for sure making it:

Portrayal of Guilt - Devil Music: Weird “double EP” from a former screamo band now playing some unholy black/sludge/general extremity. The second part is the same songs as the first part but rearranged for cello, French horn and tuba, creating some sort of demented and disturbing chamber music.

Tomb Mold - The Enduring Spirit: One of the best pure death metal bands of the last decade embraces prog.

Dead and Dripping - Blackened Cerebral Rifts: Demilich thrown into a pot with a bunch of BDM bands

Ulthar - Anthronomicon: The more straightforward of the two albums they dropped on the same day. Skronky death metal excellence.

Kostnateni - Upal: American black metal, but it’s in Czech and embraces the manic nature of that country’s exports like !T.O.O.H.! and also has a bunch of elements of Turkish music.

Ὁπλίτης [Hoplites] - Τρωθησομένη: One man in China put out three albums under this moniker (this is the second) plus one as Vitriolic Sage. It’s extremely riffy black metal with a ton of thrash influence and even some mathcore thrown in. All three Hoplites albums are great.

That always rules for sure!

Speaking of European goth and Peter Steele style stuff, I am a big big fan of The 69 Eyes. Also a lot of sleaze rock influence in there, but yeah these guys are so awesome. Saw them live a few years ago, just got tickets to see them again, it is always a nice surprise which European bands will show up in my Boston area.

this is going to be high up on my list. it's so good. i listened to the second half more than the first bc it's just so loving cool. i saw POG live a few months ago and was sad that most people in the audience didn't really react well to the newer songs and the crowd only really woke up during their older stuff. i was never into the band all that much until this EP but i'm absolutely hooked on it.

Top 6, I guess.

1. Godthrymm: 'Distortions' (doom)
2. Green Lung: 'This Heathen Land' (doom/heavy)
3. Blood Star: 'First Sighting' (epic heavy)
4. Hellripper: 'Warlocks Grim & Withered Hags' (speed/black/heavy)
5. Tanith: 'Voyage' (heavy/hard rock)
6. Terminalist: 'The Crisis as Condition' (thrash)

21st Century Awezome Man
Top 10:

1. Moonlight Sorcery - Horned Lord Of The Thorned Castle (melodic black - Bodom meets power metal meets late 90's black, one of the most fun albums in years)
2. Green Lung - This Heathen Land (doom, heavy, occult rock - awesome riffs with some Opus Eponymous/Infestissumam-era Ghost influences)
3. Mephorash - Krystl-Ah (black - atmospheric and massive songs that build up slowly with chants, choirs and all kinds of orchestrations. If Behemoth were good)
4. Panopticon - The Rime of Memory (black, folk elements - Beautiful and exhausting all at once)
5. Tenhi - Valkama (Dark folk - May not be metal per se, but one of the heaviest albums of the year nevertheless. Beautiful, patient, comforting and at times very sad)
6. Hellripper - Warlocks Grim & Withered Hags (speed, black, heavy - Non-stop rear end kicking. Sounds familiar throughout but done better than most others)
7. Horrendous - Ontological Mysterium (death, prog death - at the same time technical and heavy but with entertaining, tasteful solos, awesome bass mixing and riffs)
8. Dødheimsgard – Black Medium Current (black, avant-garde - black metal with weird electronics, jazzy parts and all around experimental stuff, but it all seems to fit perfectly)
9. Xoth - Exogalactic (black, death, tech, thrash - It's technical, thrashy and melodic: it has everything and it kicks rear end)
10. King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard - PetroDragonic Apocalypse (thrash, prog - I'm sure most won't take this seriously because of the band's genre-hopping style, but the album has some seriously awesome old school thrash, riffs and interesting songwriting throughout)

Nordick
Sep 3, 2011

Yes.
Feels like kinda slim pickings for my AOTY list this year, not because of a lack of releases but because I've been having a hard time getting in the mood to really listen to stuff. Here's some standout stuff though:

Sex Machineguns - 地獄の暴走列車 (Jigoku no bōsō ressha)
(Trad/speed/thrash/power)
These guys used to be one of my favourite bands in the early 2000s, but haven't done anything that really caught me in like two decades. And now suddenly they put out this album that's just complete loving bangers back to front. Ridiculously fun.

Bergfried - Romantik II
(Trad)
At six tracks totaling 30 minutes, this barely counts as an LP. But the important bit is that it loving rules. Has this quirky pop sensibility to it that makes it charming and just stupidly catchy.

Sacred Outcry - Towers of Gold
(Epic power)
Hands down the best poo poo the shining golden god Daniel Heiman has lent his voice to since Lost Horizon.

Hellripper - Warlocks Grim & Withered Hags
(black/speed/whatever)
Hellripper: It rips like hell

Blood Star - First Sighting
(Trad)
Nothing specific to say here, just super good trad poo poo.

Antioch - VI: Molten Rainbow
(Trad)
See above

Air Raid - Fatal Encounter
(Trad)
There seems to be a trend forming here

Owlbear - Chaos to the Realm
(Trad)
This is getting silly

Carathis - Moonstone & Amethyst
(Raw meloblack? idk)
C-c-c-combo breakerrrr. Ok this isn't exactly super raw, but still enough so that it contrasts with how poppy it also is. One man project by the other half of Bergfried, which probably explains something. Also this is technically just two EPs mashed together but whatever. It rules.

Moonlight Sorcery - Horned Lord of the Thorned Castle
(Meloblack)
indeeed extremely fun as others have said

Recite the Cynic - s/t
(Trad/EDM?? I don't loving know)
I talked about this album earlier, and I'm honestly STILL not sure what I think about it, but I just feel like it should be on this list, somehow.

Gonna also rattle off a few "honourable mentions" (i.e. albums that I know are really good but that I just didn't get around to listening all that much:
Act of Impalement - Infernal Ordinance (stanky doomy punky death)
The Bleeding - Monokrator (delightfully spicy death/thrash)
Bloodletter - A Different Kind of Hell (same as above, but melo)
Megaton Sword - Might & Power (Trad)

I don't see myself listening to anything in the next 9 days that will be better than these so I guess my AOTY list is also finalized along with some metrics, because numbers are fun.
Albums I heard for the first time in 2023: 1,756
2023 albums listened to: 1,325
Sourced from my RYM where I rate everything I listen to a 3.5 and usually say "that was pretty good" and make monthy lists.

AOTY list, ordered alphabetically
Ahab - The Coral Tombs, funeral doom
Dying Fetus - Make Them Beg for Death, brutal death
Gridlink - Coronet Juniper, grind
Häxanu - Totenpass, meloblack
Hellripper - Warlocks Grim & Withered Hags, black speed
Iron Savior - Firestar, pm
Plague Bearer - Summoning Apocalyptic Devastation, blackened death
Twilight Force - At the Heart of Wintervale, symphonic pm
Vile Ritual - Caverns of Occultic Hatred, blackened death

Y'know, it's kinda weird how nobody really talks about Opeth anymore.

Early 2000s, they were the band. I mean then they went 70s prog and kinda suck (fight me) but you don't hear them get mentioned often despite how awesome Still LIfe, Blackwater Park and Ghost Reveries were.

It seemed to be a fashionable thing to throw an acoustic interlude into a really heavy song. Also with the ending of Deliverance or Harlequin Forest, I'm sure many prog nerds had their first brush with Djent which let's face it is basically: "Hey, let's take the ending of Deliverance and construct an entire genre around that type of riff"

I mean...those albums I mentioned still kick rear end but yeah you don't see them get mentioned as often as other bands like BOLT THROWER or Woods of Ypres and stuff.

I'd rather die than go to heaven.
Probably because Mikael doesn’t do death vocals and their albums are less “heavy” now and metal nerds generally hate change and wrote them off after the Heritage album. They also haven’t put out an album in over four years now so there’s not much to talk about.

I loving love Opeth though.
