smellmycheese posted:Dyson’s hoovers and other products are grotesquely overpriced plastic crap. They have the durability and build quality of cheap Chinese toys. And I say this as someone who was badgered into buying one of his ludicrously expensive hairdryers as a gift last Xmas. Not convinced by any of the non hoover products at all, like "here's a fan that has no visible blades, pay 50 times as much for inferior performance" is like selling a toddler's potty as "here's a toilet that has no hole, pay me £200" Will be moving to a different brand when this one finally dies, as the battery is noticeably on the way out and a lot of the Chinese brands have at least noticed "hey every power tool since the 80s has allowed you to change the battery" is a selling point.

Shark cordless vacuums cost about a third as much as the Dyson equivalent and have infinitely better batteries. And the Dyson hand dryers that all the pubs bought a few years back are dying now and barely blow a whisper of air.

I got a "Tineco" brand knock-off stick hoover and it's been doing us very well. Then we did some heavy DIY and supplemented it with a Henry - it's weird though, it's made in Britain and I'm a "leftard" and I still didn't burst into flames/out crying/through the wall... baffling.

The man who came to professionally clean our sofas and rugs said he would choose Shark over Dyson every time but apparently the absolute best vacuums are a German company called Sebo, which I hadn’t heard of before.

Seconding the Henry for getting the job done and never stopping. Bought a Dyson DC05 back in 2002, but even with keeping the filter clean it slowly failed at its task.

some of the first few dysons were made really solid and with excellent attention to detail for parts replacement and maintenance- had a few at the care home I worked at precisely because they would get a lot of hard use but be easily repairable then we got a newer (then, in 2005 or so) one and it was almost like a knockoff of the previous ones and far harder to service, died in months also gently caress the commercial and societal obligation aspects of xmas but I'm looking forward to spending a bit of time with close family and friends and eating and drinking and feel lucky to be able to do so- that part is cool

I think I've said before that the anthropomorphising of Henrys (and the rest in the range) can cause a few problems with autistic kids who can get a bit over-attached, but it's a lot less harmful in the long-run than anything Dyson or Elon have been involved with, so there's something.

Looks as though a lot of the power tool companies are bridging the gap between their own "here's a big chunky shop vac that's great for dust extraction and takes our fully recyclable batteries but is bad for domestic use" and the domestic "here's a sleek stick vac with a wide range of accessories and also a note that says 'gently caress you' for when the soldered-in battery dies" Not sure how good those type are, but the backup filtration system at least seems a lot more solid than some of the Dyson sock on a stick systems.

Considering how those usually have a battery ecosystem it would be weird if they didn't make a consumer vacuum cleaner that took them considering you can get loving everything else that'll run off a ryobi battery.

# ? Dec 23, 2023 20:42 |

Yeah it took them quite a while though, it used to be more like "here's a big fucken cube that takes our batteries, also there's a carpet sweeper attachment somewhere but it's terrible" the last time I was looking at stick vacs good for home use.

And boomer divorcees who don't think anyone else should ever get married. And also get attached to vacuum cleaners, but in a very different way to those kids with the henry hoovers.

The number of times I've been pulling a Henry around a large room for work, only to have it get caught on something behind me, and I look around and it's got that cheeky loving smirk peeking around whatever corner it got stuck on

I had a Henry hoover's hose break after 2 years, and despite attempting to follow all the Youtube tutorials on mending it, I just couldn't do it. I paid for the council to take it in the bulky waste but someone nicked it from my front garden. I hope it was scrappies and not someone intending to sell it on, because it had been pouring with rain and the thing was drenched.

Henrys are absolute lumpen pieces of poo poo and I don't understand why people still buy them, especially for their home.

Once you’ve gone cordless on a vac, like a lawnmower, it’s hard to go back. I’d like to see the backpack versions that pro cleaners use available to the public

Get a Miele drag along. Smaller than a Henry and apparently strong enough to pull carpets off the floor if you use it wrong.

We have some Shark cordless thing with "anti hair wrap" and two replaceable batteries. It manages to cope with us two long haired people and a constantly-shedding husky. I couldn't imagine using a cordless vac without replaceable batteries now.

Vax cordless battery died a month before the warranty expired and they sent out a new one the next day, so that was nice.

Henry is great. Does your usual dust, hair, crumbs etc but also screws, gravel, offcuts of wire, bits of wood, lumps of concrete. The workshop one has been reanimated with cable ties and gaffer tape numerous times. Maybe one day he will be granted the final rest.

I decided to injure my brain further and watch the spate of private eye end of the year Ian hislop interviews. The sheer level of "madness to the left, incompetence to the right, why can't we just get a sensible center" over and over and over. Fucksake. How is it objective fact and long term goals and benefits are constantly considered "loony left" policies. Fuckers. I then decided I hadn't had enough pain and started to watch the private eye on year in review. https://youtu.be/T4zy6yLE2v0?si=UbWeJPxOzcO8BGHP I got about 15 minutes in before I couldn't take the painful poo poo radio 4 comedy punching down any more. Aaaaghhhh. Fire them out of a goddamn cannon.

Check out this madness: https://www.theguardian.com/money/2023/dec/23/uk-mortgages-trial-debts-shared-appreciation-mortgage-court quote:UK mortgages: trial to rule on deals that left people with huge debts quote:The bank has previously confirmed that in the case of Cooper, the “share of appreciation percentage” applying to the loan was 75%. That gives a figure of £510,000, based on 75% of £680,000, which is the “growth” in the property’s value between 1997 and now, if one uses its current asking price. The original loan of £42,500 also has to be repaid, taking the estimated total to £552,500.

Tesseraction posted:Feels a bit gauche to be magic of Christmasing when the country is in such a dire state. Greatest Hits Radio was thanking people for helping them provide 32,000 kids with presents who otherwise would get nothing on Christmas day. And sure, it's great that they did that, but I'm just thinking about what's the number of those who won't? And the families who can't afford to do anything nice for it. Christmas, ignoring the Christian poo poo, is meant to be where you counteract the depressing weather and daylight hours by having something to look forward to in the midwinter and so many people can't afford that. I get so bloody angry about how greatest hits radio have been begging everyone to donate a gift/bit of cash for a Christmas present but also have a daily competition where the prize has been over 200k for one person for the past few weeks. How about just pausing make me a winner for a few days and chucking that money into the gift fund?
