Only two types of collectors are good: The ones who turn their house to an open museum like some of the retro pc guys. And the collectors that craft every single thing the collect: Buying Funco crap is lame consumerism, building your own versions of whatever pop culture obsessess you is where it's at.

My brother and I used to have a pretty decent set of the original GI Joe stuff. The space capsule, the jeep with trailer and recoilless rifle that actually shot plastic shells, the aqua scooter, and a ton of uniforms and equipment. We played the hell out of that stuff, and it ended up being sold at the post thrift stores for literal pennies. We had to keep our possessions limited, as the Army had a weight allowance on household goods for transfers. Decades later, I was at my parents and Antiques Roadshow was on. A bunch of the same stuff we'd had went for several thousand dollars. I just raised an eyebrow at Mom and she shrugged.

Jerry Seinfeld is a weird gross rear end in a top hat, and the show was good because of Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Michael Richards and Jason Alexander as Larry David written by Larry David playing off each other and making him look like a douche.

Whoa, wait a sec here. Larry David IS a douche and that's when I learned that the bad guy is sometimes the good guy. Or rather that the anti-hero is sometimes hilariously the person you find yourself cheering for.

I dont really have an attachment to any of the stuff that guy has but I can see the appeal. Seeing the toys displayed out of the package is much more interesting than a bunch of NIB toys lined up on a shelf though.

Sometimes it's his fault and sometimes it's not, but either way he always handles it in the worst way possible.

Scratch Monkey posted:https://i.imgur.com/2EkP8gh.mp4 Imagine trying to talk to the person that owns all of this about literally anything other than pop culture that was popular in the 80s. Literally anything. Ask him who won the Grand Final last year, he wouldn't know. Hand him a cricket bat and he wouldn't know which end is the handle. Tell him you've started experimenting using Coriander in your home made spaghetti sauce, he will look at you blankly. Or start describing the problems you had changing the flat tire on your new car, or the exhausting joys of caring for your newborn and you are confronted with a glassy eyed faraway stare. But start a sentence with "Remember that episode of He Man where Skeletor did that thing?" and you will get an hour or more of excited engaged conversation where you will be lucky to get a word in sideways.
