Yeah as much as I love Entryway and consider it likewise iconic (it gets referenced all over the place, Turbo Overkill being the most recent I've seem it homaged), I'd probably have to give the nod to Hangar. It's got a lot going on in a little bit of time/space.

When I was a kid, I had the Doom II Strategy Guide and it had an interview with Romero in the back that I would read over and over (there was a section where he described what he thought Quake was going to be like), and I distinctly remember him saying that they redid E1M1 at the last minute because the original one sucked. I always wondered what the original E1M1 looked like. There's also this video filmed just weeks before release and it shows Romero playing an early revision of E1M1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HpEBUV_g9vU&t=575s Milo and POTUS posted:Has anyone done all the achievements in the quake remaster? Not 2 which is pretty sparse, the first one. Some seem kinda suspect, like the one where you have to get through something called a "pain maze" without taking damage, which seems unlikely to say the least. (I'm pretty sure most of the Quake achievements are extremely rare because it counts anyone who played the game, even if they didn't play the remaster when achievements were added) Volte fucked around with this message at 15:30 on Dec 23, 2023 |

I think he said the computer room was swapped out entirely several times, there'd be different things on the other side of that doorway until relatively last minute. E1M2 was the level they'd test things in during development, presumably because they were planning on either that being the first level or it was the first one they actually completed.

it's a conversation that's been had so many times already but i really do have to put my opinion in for doom 2's expanded roster more or less being the thing that makes it for me compared to doom 1. it's why i don't really care about either sigil level pack. i don't want to shotgun 50 cacodemons to death in a level and that sort of gameplay really doesn't do it for me. even if doom 2 didn't have the super shotgun the expanded cast of enemies would still be what sets it way above for me.

If you’re playing doom.wad PWADs the chain gun is a notable upgrade over the shotgun and you use that as your standard weapon, not the shotgun. It’s not as bad as you’re making it out to be, the chain gun is a perfectly useful weapon on anything less than a baron.

Definitely a case where the game should have been cancelled but instead they handed it to the Z-team and demanded something, any damned thing, be delivered, hell or high water. When it sounds like your developers are also your voice actors*, you know it’s being made on paper route money. * I’m thinking back to FEAR: Perseus Mandate, which had that problem as well as some flat-out Quake II mod-quality character animation and machinima vibes. Felt weirdly nostalgic, even back then; I imagine it’s aged like curdled milk.

On the topic of Lithtech jank, just tried playing Contract JACK, out of curiosity about it being so clearly a precursor to F.E.A.R in a lot of ways and jeez, even with the mod specifically to add widescreen support, that game just does not want to run at resolutions or aspect ratios other than the exact ones specified by the display menu. And when I said "screw it" and just tried playing it in 4:3 just to make sure it would even be worth the effort of messing with it in general, the mouse aiming feels all wonky despite applying the "fix" for mouse sensitivity. With Lithtech's notoriously long list of issues it's had since day 1 (the big ol G logo on my Logitech mouse seeming almost to mock me here), who knows why nothing about this game seems to want to work, but it's honestly remarkable that any good games got made with this cursed engine and sad that they're saddled with it (to say nothing of the copyright nonsense surrounding Monolith's old games), particularly the ones that don't get all the attention so there's less comprehensive info on trying to fix compatibility issues.

Quake down, good game. Definitely a stronger single player game than Quake 2, if for no other reason than it doesn't drag as much in the back half. I... like the shotguns better in quake 2? More fun with RL in 1, GL could go either way. Super nailgun more fun than hyperblaster, but I think I prefer the automatic weapons in 2 to the nail gun. What the gently caress is up with Vores, is there really no way for their projectiles to expire save getting caught on the level geometry? lovely enemy. Fiends suck too, and shamblers are probably a little spongy by half. My most hated enemy though is the weird rear end blob things. 1stGear posted:Yeah, the buff stops when the screen goes back to normal, obviously. I did think this for a looong time. F.E.A.R and Condemned are the two big ones that you missed there. Other than those, I'm not sure how good any of the surprising number of other Lithtech games are supposed to be. As for Contract J.A.C.K, I finally did the sensible thing and used dgVoodoo, which solved the aspect ratio and resolution problems fine, though not the mouse aiming. So the mouse aiming jerks up and down slightly when doing something as simple as moving left or right, like a milder version of Dusk's intoxication. Edit: Found a Reddit post saying to turn down the polling rate of your mouse to the 250-125 range and turns out that works perfectly. Doctor Bishop posted:F.E.A.R and Condemned are the two big ones that you missed there. Lithtech has some real high highs, but some real low lows. It was cheaper to license than iDTech or Unreal so you get lots of shovelware using it and since it was always a little jank most of the time bigger devs would prefer to use something a bit more stable. I think the only game that wasn't developed by Monolith (who, having made it, know how to use it to great effect) that made good use of the engine was Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault, which barring the terribly bad plane level was pretty decent.
