It'll sicken you more when you realise that the actual money they make from the calls for make me a winner is greater than the £200k prize they give out. Given how often they push that loving thing I suspect it's their main means of keeping the lights on rather than the ads.

All cordless vacuums are poo poo. They might be easier to use if you have mobility issues but they don't retain anything other than powderised dust and dirt and have a million points of failure. HENRY SUPREMACY

So if I wanted a new vacuum, what should I buy then? I have a eufy cordless and it's nice for dust and cat fluff but it can't even suck up cat litter!

I've got a Dyson v8 and I've generally been happy with it. The accessories are good, and the motorised carpet brush thingy is very well designed. It does a really good job of getting cat hair out of the carpets etc. Only thing I don't really like about it is that it complains a bit often that the filter is clogged and says it needs washing but like I say, it does deal with an insane amount of cat hair so I think overall it does quite a good job. I will never go back to a corded vacuum now. IDK if I'll get another Dyson if/when this one dies - not really because I'm disappointed with the performance of it, just because they're pretty expensive. I guess I'll have a look at what's available at the time.

Our cordless vacuum is meant to be one of the best ones which doesn't cost like £500 and honestly it's a pain in the arse. It's obviously easier to lug around, but I find I spend more time declogging it than I do actually vacuuming, and then it's not even particularly effective anyway. It does make rooms look vacuumed, but you have to just go around manually picking up all the slightly larger than dust-mote-sized things it's missed.

I got a Harry hoover from the Henry range because it has a specialised brush for pet hair (we had a husky at the time) but the Hair-o-Brush broke beyond repair after a year or so. Still a decent hoover otherwise

I got a train yesterday, which was an utterly stupid idea in hindsight, but I woke up this morning to find that my delay repay claim has already been approved! Just unbelievable that the one part of the rail network that seems to function efficiently is the bit where the train companies apologise for their lovely service and give you all your money back.

Court jester is the perfect term, they'll mock individuals or policies or even parties, but they're never going to call for any sort of solutions. And when someone comes along with a mind to actually make a few improvements, well, we saw how Corbyn was treated. He thinks we can plant HOW many trees?! 140 years ago W.S. Gilbert wrote an entire opera, which was hugely popular with the middle and political classes, where the premise is "the entire British political establishment is silly and indolent...but the real comedy is found in the people who want to change it. Aren't they the truly silly ones! Hawhawhaw!" 'Private Eye' is the direct lineal descendant of "Punch' and 'Fun' which defined that sort of middle class safe satire. It means that Hislop and his ilk can't (or won't, whichever it is) differentiate a figure like Corbyn because their entire humour/analysis is rootrf in the notion that 'they're all as bad as each other' and that they exist to document and chortle at the inherent absurdity and hypocrisy of British politics. Never asking why it's so absurd and hypocritical and getting the knives out for anyone who actually asks those questions. It's all cart before the horse stuff. All politicians are incompetent, grifting, contemptible liars that I, the respectable, educated, worldly, sensible, middle class professional can see right through and laugh at, and I'm clever enough to 'know' that the system can never change and I just have to sit on the sidelines, watching HIGNFY and Question Time and reading Private Eye and feeling enlightened and superior. Therefore, when a different sort of politician comes along with ideas like "not letting the NHS collapse", "making local buses affordable", "plant trees to reverse Britain's denaturing" and "getting rich people to pay a similar level of tax as they did in the 1980s in order to pay for a functional and prosperous society" it has to be comical, impractical, dishonest nonsense because that's all politicians say. If it's not the case, then they're not all the same, they're not all as bad as each other, the system can be changed and we'll look rather silly, uncurious and blinkered. And that can't be the case. So Jeremy Corbyn must be an extra special devious liar who we must put special effort into putting in his place. Hoover chat: When I bought this place I acquired a Henry which, as others have said, is a good cleaner but is heavy, awkward thing to lug around. So we have a cordless Hoover, erm, hoover for the weekly suck-up which does fine although the roller brush does get easily clagged with pet/fiancee hair. I always used to get Private Eye because some of the backpage reporting is still the best investigative journalism in the country. But at this stage in our decline, without a theory of political change, what is the point. I can know all the criminals in my local council thanks to a rotten boroughs column, but if all Private Eye can do is tut at them, while also mocking anyone who challenges that status quo. Then Private Eye is itself an impediment to change, by demarking the limits of what is acceptable, and what solutions can be employed. They take the energy and dedication of that rare actual journalism, and turn it into the legal bickering mush that is the very lifeblood of the british state. The Post Office IT system debacle is a telling one, it was horrific following that for years in the Eye, but... what was the outcome : some of the people abused eventually got a little money back and some of the survivors names kinda cleared - it's hard for me to see that as a victory for that brand of mocking centrism. No handcuffs for the perpetrators, no justice, no radical change, just years of pain for innocent people and then the pain is then graciously allowed to stop by the very system inflicting it - and we should be thankful! It's not enough for me anymore, what Hislop calls a victory looks more like him selling me a noble but pathetic defeat - because that is all he can even imagine, and would happily stomp on anyone who dared imagine more. - Furious of Tunbridge Wells
