I couldn't tell if the stool was attached to the scooter at all or whether he was just carefully balancing on it

To be fair, I feel like this is a reason the hirable bike system failed: it wasn't from A to B, it was from bike station to bike station. You couldn't just leave them at your destination unless that happened to be a bike station.

I never used them because I couldn't be sure there was a bike point nearby.

My father was a biker and would like four times a year join other bikers to rally around to abolish helmet laws.

He himself would always wear a helmet because "I'm not a loving idiot." He just hated being told to do so.

Yea, I mostly just use them when i'm doing a Day Downtown or something. And around here you have to use the sidewalk or you risk a biker kicking you over or something for daring to use the bike lane.

I think the previous poster meant motorcyclists, but in the case of bicycles, helmet laws are bad. You should absolutely always wear a helmet, but helmet laws are almost always only enforced as another way for cops to gently caress with young black men/teenagers and also decrease the amount of bicyclists in general, which decreases the safety of other cyclists.

And in the case of motorcyclists, hey, they'll probably have at least one viable organ someone else could use. Even if they're an alcoholic smoker with heart disease, corneas are always in demand.

Scooters are the best because they're a lightning rod for that variety of Internet tough guy

"oh yeah I chuck every one I see in a river!"

Or In this threads case

"I cut the lines on all the scooters!"

Bullshit you do, they get thrown in rivers by the same people who use them, drunk people. It's like some sort of stolen valour for vandalising scooters.

You get a similar thing around cycling here, there's a guy on a local group who swears he clotheslines cyclists off their bikes all the time of they stray outside the cycle lanes at all.

Personal scooter schad. I was in Atlanta for work so had a spare bit of time so I scooted down to a bouldering gym downtown. It felt fairly dangerous but then so did walking. After that I decided to go to the trap music museum so scooted my way over there and it's actually quite far away and in a residential area. Dropped off my scooter and almost immediately someone else picked it up and scooted off. I had wildly underestimated the popularity of the museum, it was absolutely crammed with a huge queue. So I chatted to someone in the queue and between his heavy atlantian accent and my Scottish it took me a bit to understand the queue was going to be hours to get in, hours I didn't have. But my scooter was gone so I had to walk all the way back into downtown Atlanta. Did see some cool beehives and milkweed though so not a total loss.

They can really be a problem for disabled people, blocking pavements/sidewalks etc. They can really be a problem in some places - so i can completely understand why some people hate them.

Again, its not so much the tech, its the people using them. People are assholes.

But yes, we do need to transtition away from all cars all the time, and they are part of that. I fully imagine that cities/governments have gone about it in completely the wrong way in some places.

Oh I'm all in favour of that, and I'd be in support of them banning cars from the centre of Melbourne altogether. But their 'experiment' of just leaving a whole lot of e-scooters lying around on footpaths and just letting people figure it out for themselves was always going to have a ton of teething problems

No, that isn’t what I mean or intended. Clearly I don’t want people to get hurt—whether you are walking or driving a vehicle. What I AM saying is, I am curious as to the animosity towards scooters and because I have not personally experienced any significant issue with regards to parking/throwing them in a body of water/whatever, so I find it hard to relate to. I don’t know anyone that feels any strong negative feelings, basically.

I believe these problems exist, but I also wonder how severe it really is.

Fixed: (…) the tech (…) People are assholes (…)

fake edit: don’t know how to do the line-selectively-striking-text thing on mobile

Personally, my anger/ frustration with the scooter scourge is with the way that these things are deployed without requiring an acceptable last-mile for the use/recovery/re-use cycle and that it deliberately lets the disrupter-bros off the hook by rewarding a, “oh, at that point its someone else’s problem despite being our property/business,” mentality/model. A lot of older folks with mobility issues are in my neighborhood, so the piles of scooters completely blocking the sidewalks near the adjacent trailhead (like some kind of low-rent battlement) is a lovely problem. Whatever the product/service being purveyed, it tends (overwhelmingly so) to include some kind of responsibility on the part of the business when it comes to how that thing is used (unless it’s a gun, in which case, umm, never mind, not happening.)

love having to stop and clear out a scooter parked directly in the middle of the bike lane, presumably by someone who just finished using the bike lane with that scooter and thought parking it in the middle of the bike lane was an acceptable place to leave it

I don't think the tires even have air so you can't just go around slashing them
