A Russian landing ship was blown up in Crimea this evening. It was said to have been carrying a load of Shahed drones from Iran.

Official crew complement of 98 so probably had a crew of like 50 given state of RuAF. I suppose they could have mostly disembarked but still there must have been a lot of casualties between ship crew and dock workers.

Better video of the explosion... https://twitter.com/JimmySecUK/status/1739598861771894907 Looks like it starts at one end and flashes through the rest of the ship. A precious commodity of unspeakable value as there is only one source. This is a righteous blow and hugely demoralizing. The Russian navy will blame Putin for filling their hold with farts and will not forgive him. Somewhere, some navy guys are plotting.

Some people like to use AI enhancement tools on low resolution, grainy or nighttime footage videos. And those make explosions look all kind of wacky. Could be that.

Uhh, I'll balance out the shitposting with a reckless assertion that the value of the strike isn't so much in the targeted asset itself, so much as fresh data on Russian anti-air capabilities in the area. Aluminum shavings are used in very specific explosives (ex. ANAL - ammonium nitrate aluminum). Just have chunks of aluminum around won't generally do much unless the fire/explosion hits very precise conditions. A bad mix of aluminum will look like a glitterbomb or splatter it around.

Ukraine is going to have new planes very soon for the first time in a while.

Ukrainians would have to screw up big time to lose two planes to ground based air defenses while lobbing cruise missiles at that port. ^And yes, the storm shadows are being launched by the Su-24s. That's the soviet F-111 analog - a tactical bomber with a pretty long range and big payload. Warbadger fucked around with this message at 20:17 on Dec 26, 2023 |
