I had a lovely Boxing day with the family, catching up with my aunts and Uncle, having a nice quiz and good food. My liopluradon that I got my niece was a suprise hit too. I did have to laugh that my Aunt and Uncle had bought their, huge three bedroom, house back in the late 70s for 10,000 pounds. And am, once again, happy to report that none of the fam are landlords.

This is laughing at the unspeakable. Pedophilia is the subject, and this joke is viewed grom the side that pedophilia is wrong, that the catholic church both perpetrated it and covered it up. ‘I worry that Rebecca Adlington will have an unfair advantage in the swimming by possessing a dolphin’s face.’ This is just taking a cheap pop at a woman who does not fit traditional standards of beauty. To laugh at it you need to have that minset of 'ugly people deserve it.' It's not laughing at bigotry, it's engaging in it. I'm not reposting the joke about Katie Price's son but that's another one where to find it funny and laugh at it, the listener has to have the notion that disabled teenagers are uncontrollable rapists with superhuman strength. And the joke is told from the perspective of someone who also believes that. Again, it's not laughing at bigotry, it's engaging in it and reinforcing it for audiences that don't know better. But cunts like Gervais and now Carr love to pretend that the victims of their comedy are just humourless and choosing not to laugh at their brilliant jokes. And they know it's brilliant because it made a theater full of people like them laugh. It comes from this idea of "I'm a comedian, this is a joke, you have to laugh" without facing the possibility that to some people, those jokes do not have a positive effect.

"Jokes" chat: I'm from I guess a "cross-over" generation and I completely and utterly cringe now at some of the so called "jokes" we used to tell 30-50 years ago without ever thinking of the impact they might have on other people. Especially the horrendous homophobic ones when now I know that some of the people who even joined in with those jokes - in male-dominated macho working environments (construction sector) - were, unbeknown to us at the time, gay (and several of whom I'm still friends with)

I think comedians forget that normal people watch their boundary defying shows, and a lot of them are surprisingly impressionable. While they might know that they're being ironic and that they're not actually sexist, racist, ableist, homophobic, transphobic or otherwise hateful, a hell of a lot of people will happily parrot those sorts of jokes. It just normalises the idea that these people are there to be made fun of. One of Gervais hilarious bits in this , his NEW comedy in 2023, is “ha ha disabled people can’t make up their minds what they want to be called lol! You can’t call them spastics anymore! lol!” Literally a term that was on its way out 50 years - HALF A CENTURY - ago.

Augh. We're going to have to make The Decision about our little dog soon and I'm really going to miss her. She was my dad's closest companion for years when he was ill, and she's been glued to my mum's side ever since he died. Meanwhile my cat is 20 years old and shows no particular signs of going anywhere yet. Whhyyyy don't they live for fifty years.

Be prepared for large sections of it to confront some brutal moments from her past and present. However, the ratcheting of the tension is incredible and one of the best laughs in the show follows one of these moments as it slowly dawns on you and the audience what's happening - "no you loving idiots, that's bait!" Douglas is more of a comedy comedy show, but Nanette is still an incredible performance and definitely a must watch. Just be prepared for it to not be an easy, light hearted watch.

It sounds preachy and if someone went in expecting just straight stand-up, I can see why they'd be put off, especially given that the show was supposed to be a huge middle finger to the entire comedy industry. But as I say, she explains that comedy is tension then release, and then uses the groundwork of those incredibly painful experiences to set up some incredible moments that wouldn't have worked without that tension. Relatedly, Daniel Sloss has a pretty good show in the vein of 'halfway through let's unexpectedly drop the jokes and talk passionately and angrily about male culpability when it comes to sexual assault' but I think he probably has more traditional standup and solid punchlines dotted in there for anyone who finds Nanette a bit lacking in that regard.

I can't remember if it was Nanette or another one of Gadsby's shows which included a part about marriage equality in their native Tasmania. But it included this part about how it shouldn't be a public debate which relies on a public vote to legislate for Marriage Equality, since that just puts LGTBQ people in the focus and increases the likelihood that they end up as a target. Which while true sort of leaves out the second part which is "...instead politicians should just make the choice on their own, eat the popular backlash for making a huge chance without consultation with the public and then the issue will go away and no one will re-visit it. And also no future Conservative Government is allowed undo what they has been granted through political powers alone." And I think that is the part that had me stuck as I don't feel that is realistic. Now granted, you could say "why are you focusing so much on political discourse during a comedy show?" To which I say "this comedy show is itself all about political discourse." Then again a lot of people, my wife among them, really liked it. So that's fine for them. Just not me.

Give up on AR for a few years, it gonna be awsome eventually but not for a while yet. A few years back there was a motorcycle helmet with built in HUD & stuff, on I think, kickstarter.. After loads of hype, nothing ever came of it. Quest 3 is about as good as your going to get for a few years & thats obviously janky as gently caress for AR.

Yeah, the transition for a lot of edgy New Atheists in the Bush era was making fun of conservative Christianity by saying religion is stupid and broadly receiving the support of liberals; but then making fun of Islam in the same way, running up against racism, colonialism, etc., and being told my those same liberals that what they were doing was bad. This broke their brains. As a witness on these very forums of how this played out, I can tell you that a lot of the right wing internet developed directly from there.
