I had a lovely Boxing day with the family, catching up with my aunts and Uncle, having a nice quiz and good food. My liopluradon that I got my niece was a suprise hit too.

I did have to laugh that my Aunt and Uncle had bought their, huge three bedroom, house back in the late 70s for 10,000 pounds.

And am, once again, happy to report that none of the fam are landlords.

To this point particularly, I've been thinking a lot about this recently, particularly with the usual 'lighten up, it's just a joke' response.

Both Hannah Gadsby and Carr himself have both observed seperately that good comedy relies on tension and release. You build tension in the setup, and you resolve that tension with the punchline.

The problem with this is that if you're trans, or fat, or not white, straight etc - when one of these jokes is told and the punchline revolves around a harmful stereotype, the tension doesn't go away. It's not resolved or released, it remains a problem that is amplified by the punchline. The tension isn't broken. If the listener don't have those bigoted assumptions, then the logic of the joke does not resolve in a satifying way.

The difference to me about 'no subject of comedy being off-limits' is in if you're laughing at the unsayable, or with the unsayable. Compare these two Frankie Boyle jokes:

The Pope must have done something that even the Catholic church found unacceptable. My theory is that he f***ed an adult woman.

This is laughing at the unspeakable. Pedophilia is the subject, and this joke is viewed grom the side that pedophilia is wrong, that the catholic church both perpetrated it and covered it up.

‘I worry that Rebecca Adlington will have an unfair advantage in the swimming by possessing a dolphin’s face.’

This is just taking a cheap pop at a woman who does not fit traditional standards of beauty. To laugh at it you need to have that minset of 'ugly people deserve it.' It's not laughing at bigotry, it's engaging in it.

I'm not reposting the joke about Katie Price's son but that's another one where to find it funny and laugh at it, the listener has to have the notion that disabled teenagers are uncontrollable rapists with superhuman strength. And the joke is told from the perspective of someone who also believes that. Again, it's not laughing at bigotry, it's engaging in it and reinforcing it for audiences that don't know better.

But cunts like Gervais and now Carr love to pretend that the victims of their comedy are just humourless and choosing not to laugh at their brilliant jokes. And they know it's brilliant because it made a theater full of people like them laugh. It comes from this idea of "I'm a comedian, this is a joke, you have to laugh" without facing the possibility that to some people, those jokes do not have a positive effect.

I'm from I guess a "cross-over" generation and I completely and utterly cringe now at some of the so called "jokes" we used to tell 30-50 years ago without ever thinking of the impact they might have on other people. Especially the horrendous homophobic ones when now I know that some of the people who even joined in with those jokes - in male-dominated macho working environments (construction sector) - were, unbeknown to us at the time, gay (and several of whom I'm still friends with)

David Brent works imo because he’s the manager in control of a petty little kingdom and making him look like a oval office is punching up.

One of the key part about "no topic is off limits for comedy" is it has to be good.

For example, if you are going to tell a bunch of parents of dead children some dead kids jokes, you might stop and think "hang on, is thos going to be the best dead kids joke ever. Is this going to knock everyone's socks off and have them rolling in the aisles?"

And if the answer is "No" or "maybe" then perhaps you reconsider before doing the joke.

One of Gervais hilarious bits in this , his NEW comedy in 2023, is “ha ha disabled people can’t make up their minds what they want to be called lol! You can’t call them spastics anymore! lol!” Literally a term that was on its way out 50 years - HALF A CENTURY - ago.

It's very good, and the parts that are structured as standup are incredibly competently done, but not 100% of it is a 'comedy show' and I suspect the friends of yours poohpoohing it probably made the mistake of seeing it at the top of the stand-up category on Netflix.

Be prepared for large sections of it to confront some brutal moments from her past and present. However, the ratcheting of the tension is incredible and one of the best laughs in the show follows one of these moments as it slowly dawns on you and the audience what's happening - "no you loving idiots, that's bait!"

Douglas is more of a comedy comedy show, but Nanette is still an incredible performance and definitely a must watch. Just be prepared for it to not be an easy, light hearted watch.

Its years old at this point but the common criticism I've seen and agreed with is "its a great show, but its not stand-up". Which is fine, I don't see that as a negative because I spent years listening to Henry Rollins' speaking tours albums and its a similar vibe to me (Gadsby is a better spoken word performer though).

Yes, the central conceit of the show being 'comedians are expected to just laugh things off, and some horrible poo poo has happened to me, and I don't want to laugh it off any more.'

It sounds preachy and if someone went in expecting just straight stand-up, I can see why they'd be put off, especially given that the show was supposed to be a huge middle finger to the entire comedy industry.

But as I say, she explains that comedy is tension then release, and then uses the groundwork of those incredibly painful experiences to set up some incredible moments that wouldn't have worked without that tension.

E: best viewed as a deconstruction of standup that reassembles itself for some incredible payoffs.

Relatedly, Daniel Sloss has a pretty good show in the vein of 'halfway through let's unexpectedly drop the jokes and talk passionately and angrily about male culpability when it comes to sexual assault' but I think he probably has more traditional standup and solid punchlines dotted in there for anyone who finds Nanette a bit lacking in that regard.

He's also the first comic that said "gently caress it" and named Russell Brand as an abuser about three years ago, so it wasn't a shock when the documentary came out and he was the biggest name to contribute towards it.

I can't remember if it was Nanette or another one of Gadsby's shows which included a part about marriage equality in their native Tasmania. But it included this part about how it shouldn't be a public debate which relies on a public vote to legislate for Marriage Equality, since that just puts LGTBQ people in the focus and increases the likelihood that they end up as a target.

Which while true sort of leaves out the second part which is "...instead politicians should just make the choice on their own, eat the popular backlash for making a huge chance without consultation with the public and then the issue will go away and no one will re-visit it. And also no future Conservative Government is allowed undo what they has been granted through political powers alone."

And I think that is the part that had me stuck as I don't feel that is realistic.
Now granted, you could say "why are you focusing so much on political discourse during a comedy show?" To which I say "this comedy show is itself all about political discourse."

Then again a lot of people, my wife among them, really liked it. So that's fine for them. Just not me.

British-born man who has never left UK faces deportation

quote:

A 28-year-old British-born man who has never left the country has spoken of his devastation after being told he will be deported to Portugal, from where his parents arrived more than 30 years ago, under a post-Brexit policy towards EU nationals convicted of crimes.

Dmitry Lima was born in Lambeth, in south London, does not speak Portuguese and has never travelled abroad but he was given a deportation order by the Home Office after serving a prison sentence for drugs offences and for carrying a Taser.

Lima, who had no previous convictions, is appealing against the deportation decision on the grounds that he is British and had not previously applied for a UK passport as he could not afford to pay the fees. “I’m British and I have never left the country – I just don’t understand,” he said.

quote:

In apparent recognition of the position Lima and others are in, the government introduced the British nationality (regularisation of past practice) bill in May 2023 to ensure that people are treated as British if their parents, using the EU right to free movement, came to the UK before 2000 – but the bill is yet to be enacted.

Lima’s lawyer, Naga Kandiah, said the Home Office appeared to have no record of his client being in the UK. He said: “Lima’s mother and late father have been exercising their EU treaty rights, thus making Lima a continuous resident of the UK from birth and therefore entitled to British citizenship.

“Shockingly, the Home Office has no record of Mr Lima in the UK. The Home Office also failed to recognise Mr Lima’s article 8 rights [to respect for private life, family life, home and correspondence]. Taxpayers’ money has been wasted due to the lack of preparation by the Home Office in multiple court hearings. As a small high street firm, we have compassionately taken Mr Lima’s case on, allowing him access to justice.”

A Home Office spokesperson said: “It is longstanding government policy that we do not routinely comment on individual cases.”

This is insane.

Yeah, the transition for a lot of edgy New Atheists in the Bush era was making fun of conservative Christianity by saying religion is stupid and broadly receiving the support of liberals; but then making fun of Islam in the same way, running up against racism, colonialism, etc., and being told my those same liberals that what they were doing was bad. This broke their brains.

As a witness on these very forums of how this played out, I can tell you that a lot of the right wing internet developed directly from there.
