stev posted:The hater subreddits are the best subreddits. Years ago a 40k Youtuber named "Arch Warhammer" had a bit of a following, despite being an obvious chud with strong political opinions. Understandably not wanting their brand to be associated with that drivel, Games Workshop made rare good use of their legal department by telling him to stop using their trademark for his channel name, forcing him to become just "Arch". At the same time they also took the unprecedented step of a public announcement telling any chuds to not buy their products and gently caress off out of the hobby, with enough clues for people to deduce who in particular prompted the message. This resulted in some leaked logs from Arch's private Discord server, where you'd be shocked to learn that he not only openly confessed to being a fascist and was regularly engaged in relentless racsim/homophobia/etc, but his inner circle were also big fans of very specific forms of pornography. Mods for his personal sub-reddit staged a coup and /r/ArchWarhammer is now dedicated to Warhammer architecture - plus pro-communism, gay & trans rights content specifically to piss off the former founder.

mrpwase posted:With a lot of things over the many years I've argued with my dad, I think he is (and a lot of others like him are) a good person submerged under a torrent of right wing poo poo from social media, and a life spent voting Tory because he decided that's what would make him the most money, to provide for us. If you internalise the first thing you hear about a topic (usually a lie) and get frustrated when you get into an argument about it, it is inevitably very difficult to come to the truth when you're dug into that position. Many years ago we got in an argument because they said gay men shouldn't be teachers because they believe they're more likely to be pedophiles (i.e. 'start touching the kids'). I called them out on it, I went and looked up a bunch of stuff, but even when proven wrong they still fell back on 'well what if they did though?' I discovered last year when they got a bit drunk that they seem to have the same idea about trans women assaulting cis women. And again I tried my hardest, but they still had this barrier of 'well I've imagined it happening, which means it's a real threat.' And as soon as I started to seriously challange it they went on the defensive and started accusing me of 'bringing up politics.' I think that's the main difference is that if I had an underlying assumption, and it clashed with reality, I'd consciously work to get rid of that underlying assumption. But they just seem to be walking around in a daily mail induced torpor of self righteous fury. They manage to keep up the facade of seeming such lovely people to everyone, and manage to section off 'talking about politics' that people find it hard to believe when I say it. But it slips out occasionally, like when I was driving along with my dad talking about people hosting Syrian and Ukrainian families, and he suddenly launched into this invective about what if you got one of 'the bad ones.' It just makes me sad because it's people like that who get to call themselves nice, they get to control what's possible in political discourse, and call people like us rude and disruptive when we challenge it; and the whole time there's this layer of hatred of the other boiling away under the surface.

They're binary thinkers living in a past fantasy world that gave them unprecedented opportunity. They cannot grasp a world in which they're wrong or where things are significantly more politically complex because these are at direct odds with everything they've been told for the vast majority of their lives. Trying to even remotely parse this in boomer-verse is too much effort and too confrontational so it's just got to be someone else's fault! Especially imaginary threats of marauding immigrants, gay people, trans people, the woke or whatever boogeyman they think is 'coming for them'.

The interesting part is that the vast majority of interpersonal violence, child abuse, and 'bad ones in your home' comes from the heteropatriarchal nuclear family and nobody ever wants to talk about that. If you really want to neutron bomb the conversation then internalize a bunch of facts about the toxicity of that structure until you can trot them out like Daily Mail just so stories in response to any about an 'other'.

A lot of it is style too. Things involving studies, organizations, statistics, or the analytic view are 'politics' even though really they should be the opposite, whereas half-formed comfort thoughts taking the human view from within their ingroup are 'not politics' even though they are. Which ties into the whole idea of the Other as a way to avoid examining things that might make you uncomfortable. Don't need to listen to the sanctimonious vegans if you can convince yourself that the Muslims invented a far worse form of meat industry on purpose because they're terrible.

The point of University Challenge is that most questions have at least something to cling to. Like really complicated bonus rounds on science often have a clue where they share the first three letters. That along with minor knowledge of the subject and a basic grasp of latin or history will often allow teams of four to dig out at least one answer from the back of their mind. Similarly the art questions can at least be guessed at with very common knowledge, if its a round on romantic poets, just answer Yeats for every question and you'll probably score some points. Name a minor character from an obscure game is either you know it or you don't.

I remember University Challenge used to be a target of jokes in Northern Ireland back in the 70s and 80s, the joke being the questions were too 'mainland' based. Who was the King's butt cleaner in 1632? What happened during the annual cheese farting festival in Peckindale Upon Symth in 1854?

I genuinely wonder whether the questions may have shifted in recognition of BLM. It feels like there are very frequent bonus rounds on black cinema or black artists in particular. Maybe it was always there and I'm just noticing it more. Nothing to do with Norn Ireland of course, I just think the question writers are quite aware of current politics.
