Random interjection here - the malwarebytes firefox plugin seems to trigger the youtube bullshit. You using that?

It was driving me crazy, couldn't understand why I was getting the lovely popup even though my uBlock Origin was up to date, cache cleared etc.

Competing/overlapping extensions in Firefox can be an issue, yeah. "Enhancer for YouTube" has a checkbox to block ads, which is what was triggering YouTube nags for me until I unchecked it and restarted the browser.

I don't think so.

It's an inherently selfish belief system (if you could call it that) in which your selfishness is a virtue and your success is 100% because you are the Self Made Man.

It naturally appeals to narcissistic capitalists. It's a validation.

You might have another plugin that is the way. In my case it was enhancer for youtube which had it's own adblock. I disabled it's adblock while keeping the rest of the functionality.

Don't use a chromium based browser. I simp for firefox.

Turn off all other adblockers and any app that interacts with YouTube and don't use Chrome.

I'm annoyed that prime didn't let me give a reason for cancelling. It was bad enough having an ad at the beginning, gently caress having them throughout as well. Also it seems like the service is 99% rent or buy crap anyway, not much for included content. I only signed up for the new Kids in the Hall. I will return if they ever make more Kids in the Hall.

I think the thrust of it was that Sears and K-Mart had a lot of value as companies primarily because (especially in K-Mart's case) they were sitting on a ton of super valuable legacy real estate. K-Mart bought a ton of land assets in the 80s

Once other publishers find some of their own text in a book generated by AI, they will go after multiple companies. Artists and photographers are already doing this. It's going to be lawsuit heaven for greedy lawyers looking for paydays. Licensing the data and images will be a really big thing once the larger companies are hit for billions. Scraping the internet to train your models was the dumbest thing any company could do.

If you listen to the barfed out legalese at the end of the ad for the new service they mention that "some shows still have ads."

Of course this part is sped up as fast as legally possible

Yeah, I'm not so sure fair use clause was meant to allow companies to ingest the entire internet. It's the same reason I can't go to a library, check out a book, and copy it down backwards and sell it. It might be different and new, but it's still illegal. I wonder if Legal Eagle has done a take on this yet.

Giant corporations vs the AI companies ruining the internet? Let em fight I say.

doctorfrog
Mar 14, 2007

Great.

1) People will grumble about the ads, but still mostly use the services
2) NYTimes and all them will fail to do anything against AI and, in the end, will ally themselves with the stronger AI companies or implement their own crappy AI stuff
3) Big AI will be hyped on (the NYT in particular seems fascinated with AI news stories) until it collapses, like blockchain and self-driving
4) We will be left with lower baseline of quality than before, with more ads, nonsensical mush for content, and the larger media companies (NYT being one of them) stabilizing themselves
5) Price increases, hassles, unskippable ads
6) People will grumble, but continue to use the services

I'm not real smart, but one problem with the enshittification theory, that platforms become worse and worse until they die, is this: people will endure anything to alleviate their boredom, but if there's no better service to run to, they'll still leave the TV on, or go to that one site for their news/entertainment. If enshittification is constant throughout the industry, through collusion or just everyone pushing their chess pieces at the same time, and the rapid adoption of AI might make this possible, the baseline experience will just go lower, globally.

So, I say now: practice doing without cheap, good, ad-free content now. Because absolutely none of it is worth enduring a single ad for, much less the nonsense to come.

Absolutely absurd that you think cheap ad-free content will ever go away. It won't. We're just entering another period where yo ho ho is better than streaming. That's the thing, piracy is the omnipresent baseline that the services must defeat to exist, and piracy is at an all time low because legal streaming has been so easy and good in the recent past.

Give it a little time and piracy will be easier than ever, and the legal streaming companies will once again be forced to provide value in order to eat. Remember, piracy got us streaming in the first place. Piracy will fix this.

Yo ho ho, motherfuckers.

I legit think AI images are getting worse now. I don’t know if it’s because they’re all scraping from the same sources or are literally training on each other, but their “art style” has homogenized to the point where it’s obviously AI even before you look at the hands.
