So while it's good for showing the concepts I would not using it for actual comparisons.

There's a bunch out on MD 404 on Maryland's eastern shore where they're unsignalized. https://www.google.com/maps/place/M...kXzZz?entry=ttu I think it was mostly a sop by the state to local farmers etc. complaining about taking away their left turns when they turned the road into a divided highway. In reality trucks will go find the traffic signal, unless it's a dead time of day in the off-season

Diverging Diamonds Interchanges loving rule. Alaska put up their first a few years ago and AKDOT&PF made a video explaining it I highly recommend watching it if you want to see their benefits broken down on a route-by-route basis (both vehicle AND pedestrian) https://vimeo.com/143181922 At the time of project creation, it was the 35th DDI in the U.S. Pretty rare and very new. The first US DDI was constructed in 2015 in Springfield, MO https://www.modot.org/diamond-type-interchanges. I used to live close to the Alaska DDI and it was a massive improvement over the previous partial cloverleaf which you can see in the presentation slides below. Check out those insane traffic volume figures for a design that had not been updated since 1974. The cloverleaf was failing and leading to a high volume of accidents and the occasional fatality. Especially of service members and/or their families leaving the nearby military base in vehicles completely unequipped for Alaska winters and zero snow driving experience https://dot.alaska.gov/nreg/projects/SPREE_2015/Presentations/Glenn_Muldoon_DDI.pdf Construction started mid 2016 and ended early fall 2018. It also has some pretty dope lighting effects on the underside that you can see from the contractor's website https://www.dowl.com/projects/glenn-muldoon-interchange/ and the reinforced earth designs on the side are still holding up and look great https://reinforcedearth.com/project/glenn-highway-and-muldoon-road-interchange/

I think the only place the DDI really falls down flat is in the “oops I didn’t want to take this exit and would like to get right back on the freeway the same direction I was originally headed.” Oh well, learn to read a map I guess.

Cartoon Man posted:https://i.imgur.com/hRbEa0r.gifv I'm super loving skeptical of that entire simulation when it opens with a traffic jam on a 4-way with no controls whatsoever, and traffic is still flowing somehow instead of being gridlocked - oh there it is, cars are clipping through each other. While a 'standard' roundabout is 20x as slow. But the showcase of various interchanges is cool, if you ignore the dubious numbers.

Cities Skylines just gives up on cars not phasing through each other when the traffic situation gets bad enough. It also assumes every driver merges instantly with pinpoint accuracy.

I use that lane exclusively because i have a prompt right turn after crossing under the freeway, and the number of "go straight" people from the middle left turn lane is shocking and dangerous. I guess no surprise that drivers suck in the US.

RoastBeef posted:No, but they're almost universally signalized. Ukraine has a bunch of these turnarounds on divided highways after turn-offs. So you can't stop and turn left if you want to turn left off the highway, you drive a little further and turn around into this turn-out, then drive back and turn right. There's no signal, but basically there is no way someone getting onto the highway and somebody getting off of the highway can interfere with each other as they would if it was just s straight left turn off the highway. They also have a ton of other weird poo poo.

None of those roundabouts are particularly gnarly. The Swindon Roundabout is the single worst one I'm aware of - it's a bidirectional roundabout, with 5 entrances/exits, and 5 mini-roundabouts so you can change directions. The internal roundabout runs counterclockwise, while the outer roundabout runs clockwise. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D22BOOGbpFM

biznatchio posted:Cities Skylines just gives up on cars not phasing through each other when the traffic situation gets bad enough. yeah, and never switches to other, empty lane from a full-stop queue. So having parallel lanes is pretty much meaningless 90% of the time. It also has trouble understanding yield and stop signs, so making actually functional roundabout needs micromanagement. The one in the example was not. Unless you use that traffic AI mod mentioned in few test intersections to make the drivers smarter and more opportunistic, those numbers are utterly meaningless.
