It's a chain (Continental Transmission). When it happened last Friday I called my regular mechanic and was like, "You don't do any transmission work do you?" and he said no. I told him where I was planning on taking it and he said to avoid that particular location as the "owner is a bandit" and recommended I take it to the location I went to instead.

This is a Volvo 242 with an S65 V8 and 7 speed DCT swapped into it from an E92 M3.

I also own a 1985 240 that's been on the list for a restoration for years, not sure I want to have exactly the same engine in two cars, but this has to absolutely rip

Peter Björck's Volvoghini is a wagon, but as the name implies it's got a Lambo V10.

I’d probably try to find a real euro specialist to look at it. I don’t trust transmission only outfits - they’re in the business of selling transmissions so obviously your car needs a transmission.

Sab669
Sep 24, 2009

Fair. There is 1 Euro specialist in the area but honestly I don't have high confidence in their knowledge.

I took my first E91 to them after I got a low coolant warning, they said they pressurized it and didn't find any leaks. I parked it, bought this current E91, and ~2 months later I sold it on C&B and it blew up on the buyer before he even got out of town. The mechanic that the buyer took it to said the coolant system was hosed lol. Not sure if it that rubber flange that connects to the motor deteriorated [as is common with these] while it was parked or what but idk.

Like to me, if you're a specialist and someone brings you a car known to have problems with its coolant system and you don't give any information beyond doing the basic test then it seems to me like you don't really know what the known failure points are of the car, y'know?

Who buys cars from copart? I’ve followed along on multiple auctions and each one has ended in disbelief.

Recently.

2011 E91 manual with light appearing damage went for over $12k.

1997 M3 totally munched front rear and sides but S54 swapped went for over $5k.

There were bids from all over the world happening. Is it really worth it to ship a completely scrap 10 year old Corolla to Russia or Nigeria?

TLDR: Brief fever dreams of S54 swapping my car now happy the market decided for me that I’m not.

What's the hold up? Last I recall off the top of my head was you having issues with the insurance undervalueing it after an accident but I feel like what was a while ago.

Also, what oil do you guys use? Mine is apparently low, which is mildly concerning as I just had the oil changed back in July, ~2000 miles ago. Ordered something from Pentosin off Amazon that fits the bill, but I'd like to put a liter in sooner if I can find something off the shelf that's rated correctly...

It’s probably got something to do with local taxes and tariffs and import regulations. There was a very brisk business importing old RHD cars in to the Russian far East for many years. Something like half the cars in Vladivostok were RHD. I imagine the cars going to Nigeria etc are in some cases parts cars, it being potentially easier and cheaper to import a complete used car rather than an actual collection of spare parts.

Just waiting for the body shop that I had gotten an estimate in January to get back to me to pick up where we left off then. Insurance stuff is sorted, somewhat unpleasantly but is why it is.

I think the only off the shelf that still meets BMW rating is Castrol synthetic. Personally I buy liquimoly from FCP euro or bimmerworld and just have extra of it around always. Mobil-1 synthetic used to meet the standard but apparently they changed the formula slightly 6-7 years ago so it lost the rating though I know people that still use it.

Castrol 0w40 lost their BMW approval at some point. Mobil 1 0w40 is LL01 approved and so is Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5w40. Mobil 1 5w30 ESP has LL04 approval. I run the 0w40 in my M3 and the 5w30 in my 330i. I could probably run the 0w40 in everything I own and get the 12 quart thing for $50 but I don't.

e: apparently castrol 0w30 and 0w40 have LL01 as well. 0w40 just recently got it back

I've been using liquimoly for a couple years and haven't had any issues, but i live in a relatively mild climate and do primarily low mileage driving here and there around town. Last i checked it's still ok for the s62. I'm actually gonna do one of those oil analysis things when I change it in the spring so we'll see(?)

I've stuck with the recommended Castrol 10w-60 for my E92 M3 whenever I've done my own oil changes. My mechanic uses Kroon Emperol at the same weight. But now I'm finding out there's people using the thinner 0w-40 weight - are there any benefits to this?

I dont think you should go that thin on S engine. I know some use 5w50 (hello m539) 0w40 is standard for N52.

An advantage of thinner oil on the S65/85 is that it provides a bit easier time for oil to get in the rod bearings that are stock a bit too tight of clearance for the oil. If you have done fixed aftermarket RBs it makes less difference. Thinner oil also helps it get to temperature and lube everything faster, but less ideal if you are going to really push the engine or live in a very hot environment.

My E92 M3 only gets Liqui-Moly RaceTech GT1 10w60, my mechanic is an extremely OCD Porsche/BMW dude so I listen to his recommendations for what the right stuff to use is.

It doesn't take very long for the S65 to get to temperature and thinner oil up front does nothing to get the LSD ready to be romped upon, so from my experience it is smart to always let it warm up for 2-3 minutes before you even move and don't rev past 3-4k until you've driven a few miles. Can't see any real benefit to using thinner oil.

I'm pretty sure that lead spike is from a race fuel additive I used for a track weekend at Thermal in the spring of 2019.

Damnit that reminds me that I have to send oil samples off for analysis. I've taken samples from the last three changes, just never got to sending them off. Is there a point where the samples 'go off'? I'm assuming the metal content can't evaporate, but perhaps the oil consistency changes such that the sample is not really representable of the engine condition.

When I had a quick business trip to Kenya a few years back, a shockingly large number of cars were gray market imports from Japan. How did I know? Some had the Japanese emissions level stickers on the back, some also had dealer stickers as well, some even still had the police parking certification sticker as well.

What does the bit you can see inside the valve cover look like? You obviously need to change the oil to check it out, but I've seen that on the oil cap before and it was just condensation buildup. Not sure where you are, but colder temps and the thing where your car was probably sitting for a bit waiting for repairs would add to that.

Sab669

Not sure if the non-M3 caps got updated, but the OEM M3 caps never snugged down properly (at least in the pre-facelift cars), the little metal arms that lock in when you turn it half a turn were too tall or something after the gasket dried out a bit, and they revised it 7 or 8 years ago because condensation like that was occurring.

Trying to buy a used X5 and it’s unbelievable to me how many 90k+ specced cars they sold without Heated/ac seats, heated steering wheels or adaptive cruise.

My 10 year old ford has these what the gently caress BMW/BMW buyers.

There are like 3 hybrids or m50i within 200 miles of me with ACC out of 200+ total CPO X5s.

My 128i suddenly went into limp mode and showed an injector circuit code for cylinder 2 right before Christmas. New coils from fcp and it's back running again, easy peasy. But BMW lets you run ventilated seats and heated seats at the same time for the best of both worlds: A warm, but not sweaty, rear end and back on road trips.

So my parents are moving overseas and leaving me their 2016 528i. My wife will be driving it mostly but it was made before backup cameras were a thing. What options do I have to add a backup camera? Can I install a backup camera from a newer BMW and have to work with the currect infotainment? Even if that's a thing its probably going to be $$$. I already have a spare Garmin GPS that can work with one of their wireless backup cameras which should only cost me less than $100 extra but I'm not sure if that's the best option but its definitely cheap. My budget is $400 or less.

Just go the garmin route or find one of the aftermarket that plugs into the radio/media thing. No reason to go fancy expensive BMW parts on this imo, it would probably be a pain in the rear end getting a new system working on an older chassis as well.
