This is the Hebrew article and the source you linked is partly correct. 15% of the city is unemployed, not 60%. Over 80% of the city's businesses (not just tourist ones, though it's mostly tourism companies since Eilat is that kind of city) have been "damaged".

https://www.mako.co.il/finances-news/israel/Article-1183701eb3fac81027.htm

Also Eilat's population increased by 30K, all of those being refugees. The 15K hotel employees are expected to be laid off after those guys are allowed to return home, whenever that happens.

Slave-to ZeDik

The only possible agency for an authentically democratic, anti-capitalist politics is conscious struggle by the exploited and oppressed for self-emancipation. Class politics have been set back by decades of neoliberal victories and labour movement defeats. But the abandonment of a focus on the agency of working-class and other democratic struggles from below has a longer history. The last century is tragically full of instances of leftists substituting the agency of the exploited and oppressed for that of Stalinist states and various other authoritarian forces.

Many self-defined leftists have gone so far as to support, sometimes more “critically”, sometimes less, state and non-state forces that do not even claim the rhetoric and symbolism of socialism: Putin’s Russia, Assad’s Syria, the Islamic Republic of Iran, and Islamist paramilitary forces such as Hamas and Hezbollah.

We believe that the rise of syncretic politics, campism and conspiracy theory, as well as the deepening purchase of pseudo-emancipatory antisemitism, can partly be explained as symptoms of this left abandonment of class, and of an analysis of the dynamics of global capitalism.

Much left politics of recent decades has been predicated not so much on a struggle against capitalism-as-social-relation, but on a rejection of “American hegemony”, “globalisation”, “finance” — or sometimes, “Zionism”, seen as the vanguard of all these forces. This has led many people who think of themselves as leftists to sympathise with reactionary alternatives to current political and economic arrangements.

At the same time, truncated forms of anti-capitalism, that focus on the supposed moral evils of “financial” or “unproductive” capital – rather than on the objective antagonism between capital and labour – encourage personalised critiques of “globalist elites” and “Rothschild bankers”, rather than a movement towards the abolition of capitalism itself, through collective organisation and struggle from below.

dunno but someone's funding her to tour israel to broadcast all the hamas atrocities and she's been bumbling around over there accidentally documenting things like israel killing their own hostages or firing hellfire missiles at cars

it's very funny

as for the latter question, is that even a thing? There's enough epstien clients or just arch zionists in the media industry that you can't really be blacklisted for being a bloodthirsty psychopath

She also perjured herself in a court of law and had no consequences because she's a white woman, lol.

She claimed a witness had been watching the trial and commenting on it and as proof showed a screenshot of an instagram post with the date cropped out.

It was from a different trial entirely.

She eventually got the boot for live-tweeting during the proceedings.

Not to be confused with meat.

I watched that in September, it was boring as gently caress. It can barely be called a biopic, it was a wikipedia-tier history lesson about the Yom Kippur war with a couple of very short, meaningless scenes about the Agranat Commission interspersed in between. It reminded me a lot of Oppenheimer in that sense, which also flashes between the "present" (the war, building the bomb, etc) and the "future" - Oppenheimer's hearing regarding his security clearence - except done poorly and with zero thought or creativity. Just reading the basics off of the 7th grade textbook.

I regret to inform you that

Dan Carlin posted:

Palestinian leadership has once again made a decision that will IN NO WAY improve the lives of their people. There is NO POSITIVE outcome for them here (except to personally bolster their chances to stay in power). They have hurt their cause(s) and increased the suffering in Gaza

There are lots of grievances Palestinians could cite that deserve attention. Actions like those of this week close the ears of many who might be willing to listen/help. This plays into the hands of hardliners on both sides. Pity the civilians (on both sides) are victimized.

You deliberately target civilians (not even under the fig leaf of "collateral damage") and you reap the whirlwind. Lets understand that Hamas might want that. But their people have a right to expect better. The actions this week by Hamas have been nothing short of disgusting.

The idea that targeting/attacking innocents BY DESIGN is "defense" is a joke. It's wrong when anyone does it (and nation states do this too) but what we have seen this week is why nothing gets better in the region. Hamas may benefit from this in a sick way, but Palestinians won't

The reaction by Israel now will be exactly what ANY NATION ON EARTH would do in like circumstances (and Hamas knows this). When you look at what this leads to in reaction go tell your people then "well at least we killed some of them too". It's sick. And counterproductive.

Hopefully Palestinians get a chance to throw you (Hamas) on the dustbin of history soon, before you damage those whom you are charged with protecting anymore than you already have. Hamas doesn't want peace. They'd be out of business if it ever happened. But PEOPLE deserve better.

And let's hope the Israelis who are currently hostages get home to their loved ones soon. It's UNIMAGINABLE what their families must be feeling. The damage this event has done will not be overcome in my lifetime. It's monumentally counterproductive. The cycle of pain continues.

Patrick Wyman's Tides of History and Fall of Rome are good, and his academic bona fides are more solid than Carlin, who hasn't done any postgrad stuff if I remember his CV right.

If you have a subscription to chapo I have found Christman's stuff to be punchy and seemingly reasonably well researched.

In 1981's Heavy Metal film the UN was turned into low income housing. No longer needed after future Earth became something of a galactic slum.

Seen in the modern context the whole place would likely just be demolished and replaced by luxury condos.

Eilat is literally a beach city, just like Ocean City, MD or the Jersey Shore or whatever. Most of their business is geared towards the port and the beaches, so obviously it's going to go bust when Ansar Allah is stopping traffic and they've also been targeted so tourism disappears (other than people from the north, I guess). Not really shocking.
