basically to paint like him, you need to learn to make objects look like they are emitting light, how to plan light sources for (high)lighting objects, and how to paint specular highlights (which is also how you paint NMM). these are not skills i particularly have myself, but that's how you'd go about recreating his style.

This is the truth.

Blending and brush control are the easy bits. Knowing how to do composition is the x-factor and a lot harder to learn.

I suspect a fair few painters in this thread can make a decent stab at copying that exact miniature but not many will be able to conceive of something like that to start with the technical skill vs the creative aspect.

There's something to be said about AI art taking to to the nth degree - able to make perfect facsmilies of an artist's style with none of the creativity.

Flipping burgers at McDonalds would be more financially stable and pay more than painting miniatures for commission. All the big painters these days seem to hop onto the influencer bandwagon for that sweet VC sponsor cash which sounds much better than commission painting or MaccyDs.

No different than being an artist. When you start out you must suffer through doing commissions. It gets your name out there and pushes your skills to be the best they can be, as fast as you can. You do that until you fail and find a new career, or you graduate out of commissions onto another revenue stream, which for mini painters seems to be youtuber. There are those who excel at commissioned work, I know a few, they graduate to the commission whales and start charging obscene amounts, I doubt that exists in the minis world.

You don't go down that path because you want to, you go down that path because you must.

Thanks, combination of being mirrored and upside down just stopped it from making any sense to me whatsoever. Especially with "DEI" is symmetrical on the vertical axis. (It means "God Killer", or something like that?)

I wrote the text down on a piece of paper and held it up to a lamp, just to be sure. :D

Year in review for the thread(s) that keep me improving and going with all the great models you post. Roughly in order:
Chosen squad and a Noise Dread

Master of Possession and a Dark Apostle and his Liddle Guys

Multi Legion Kill Team

Traitor Guard squad

Termies

Raptors

Warp Talons (finished the last 2 today)

In 2024 I'm going to set aside more hobby time so I can start a second army, and invest in a better photography setup. Happy new year Painting thread

I ended up re-doing the heat discoloration on the dreadnought guns. In the end, they're okay; I think I can do better with the second sprue of infantry.

I am especially happy with how the basing turned out. I used the Mediocre Hobbies stippling technique, except instead of just doing Zandri Dust, Screaming Skull, and Wraithbone, I added a layer of Hull Red first, which I think really makes the color richer, and also after I added the final stipple layer of Wraithbone I went in with Tamiya Panel Liner Dark Brown and accentuated the lines and cracks. Turns out I didn't even need to clean it up after application, because the four layers of stippling is sufficiently porus and matte to disperse the enamel, and the extra bit of staining around the spots where I applied it just add to the overall dappled effect.

The bases did produce an interesting problem, though. I knew I couldn't do black rims like I normally do. LI troops are so fairly low-detail and Raven Guard LI troops especially are mostly going to appear as, roughly, little clusters of vertical lines sticking up from a circle, mostly visible in silhouette. The horizontal black lines created by the front rims of a rear row of bases would cross behind the vertical silhouettes of RG troops on a front row of bases and disrupt the silhouettes and look bad.

My initial thought was to just use Steel Legion Drab, the GW standard for non-black base rims...

...which, it turns out, looks awful, because the warm brown looks too close in color to the effect of the stippled colors and tamiya dark brown panel liner, and the whole thing loses all its apparent color variety. So I shifted to Dark Reaper.

Much better.
