Yeah, tiny wheels are cool and you are king of the road if you have wheels as deep as the diameter. It's not uncommon for cars to be rolling on 13s that are 10+ inches wide with crazy negative offset. This also explains the hilariously sized arches that are usually just a trimmed sheet of black plastic. It's definitely a pretty fascinating subculture.

Wait so the wheel and I'm assuming drive train is in the middle of the rear? Seems like a waste of space to me. I know it's for technical legal reasons but it's dumb.

The bulk are probably more mid-late 70s now. And they are absolutely still buying new vehicles. They are the same people who are keeping domestic luxury alive along with basically any convertible that costs more than $40K.
