Current Arch Enemy is completely unrecognizable if your only knowledge of the band is those older albums.

New(ish) singers growls are easy to understand, there's occasional clean vocals, guitars have gone melodic and there's actual guitar solos.
I have seen them on festivals and they're fun live band though, but completely different than before:

Wow, that's pretty wild. Definitely felt a little flat to me instrumentally, but I like the new vocalist more than Angela. Also you lled me down a rabbit hole and I learned that the OG lineup got back together and called themselves Black Earth, continuing the In Flames trend of all my favorite high school bands getting back together with their original members. If I can get a Soilwork album with The Chainheart Machine's lineup I will be the happiest person in the world.

I don't really have a preference between Angela and Alissa vocals-wise, but musically I haven't gotten much out of the Alissa era. I did quite enjoy War Eternal though. But then again I also really liked Wages of Sin, so YMMV.

I only really like the Angela era. After her departure, the music has felt flatter - not just vocally, but nothing melodically has grabbed me from the new stuff either.

I've always heard this complaint about them but never understood it. Metal is a precision genre in a lot of ways. Bands don't really jam it out very often.

i think it's less a complaint about live shows to me (i enjoyed them every time i've seen them) but i remember a friend in college had a live dvd of them and it was sort of confusing because it just sounds almost exactly like the album tracks, which sort of negates the point of a live recording. anyway you don't have to jam or w/e but it's cool to maybe have some alternate versions of songs or covers you only do live or something, particularly when you're a band 10 or 20 years into your career

Vulture Culture posted:

I loved Pale Communion but Heritage was definitely 57:04 of audio. I guess I'm too dumb to get retro prog.

Yeah, but Opeth isn't one of those precision bands. When a band spends a minute and a half just playing the same riff like the opening of Demon of the Fall, you expect a certain jam quality from their writing process to shine through in their live performances, and it just doesn't. Steven Wilson plays the same poo poo every time too, but he's smart enough to get Lasse Hoile and Jess Cope to deliver 80 minutes of visuals.

Mikael's frontman banter used to be charming and witty enough to paper over the cracks, but it's gotten harder now that he just sounds like his entire body is in pain 100% of the time.

Porcupine tree do some pretty different versions of songs live. When I saw them right after the incident came out and they played the whole album, several songs were drastically reworked.

I remember Akerfeldt asking the crowd at show if they liked cock rock and when only like 5 of us said yes he called everyone liars and that was pretty funny

so like ΟΠΛΙΤΗΣ is a chinese dude who is like obsessed with greek stuff thats cool, gonna check him out for sure. After seeing all this propaganda about China people being herded into complete apathy its certainly refreshing seeing free thinking artists from China doing great stuff.

Its a bloody darn shame the actual greek BM scene is so heavily tainted by NS (with shining exceptions like kawir, rotting christ and others) but darn this is nice to see.

Demon King - Vesania - Blackened melotech(?)
Carnosus - Visions of Infinihility - Neoclassical Tech
Dyssebeia - Garden of Stillborn Idols - Progressive Melodic Tech

I don't remember why I missed them on their trip through Albany last year (probably sick kids), but I do remember going to pick up pizza the next night and one of the guys cooking was loudly talking to his coworker about "the show at [venue] last night was NUTS" and I was like "oh drat did you go see Vomit Forth??" and he gave me the strangest look and I realized I was still in my button up/slacks from work and probably looked like the biggest goober who ever goobered

That's a fun thing called "hyperacusis" which is a murky term for "loud sounds now hurt". It's basically due to the high frequency parts of the compressor in your inner ear getting blown out by abuse
