is that the follow up?

I have to wait till after work

I know the first video pretty much addresses why light “slows down”, but that didn’t answer exactly why it bends, did it?

I understand why a more traditional wave would, it’s just the constructive interference when it crosses the boundary, is it just the same mechanism? for some reason I thought it wouldn’t apply with photons but the more I think about it the more I suspect it’s just the same 🤯

it's sort of funny that he says it's not the usual youtuber burnout but in the last week I've seen a bunch of other youtubers make very similar announcements. He's definitely the highest profile of them and probably spends the most time on his videos so it's not necessarily exactly the same but it does basically seem like youtubers often end up having similar problems where it ends up being their entire life even though they never meant it to be.

Tom Scott specifically already announced a year ago that 2023 would be his last year doing this.

yeah i thought about this too, like if you make it your career to be a youtuber how does the middle of your career look?

like what does the hydraulic press guy do, he can't keep smashing stuff forever.

I suspect that it will be fairly easy for Tom Scott to do whatever he wants now. (e.g. if he writes a book or something I'm sure lots of people will buy it)

It's probably a lot harder for a lot of other youtubers making niche content since there's no real way they could leverage their youtube success to do anything else

On the other hand I'm not sure how different that is from any other job in 2024

yeah and the hydraulic press guy is maybe not the greatest example, he can go back to machining stuff which is what i think he did before the youtube channel.

but still, it's not like youtube has a matching 401(k) plan or something so pretty much all youtubers are expendable, exploited, and very vulnerable to job loss. so when they make it their whole life it doesn't really offer great advancement, no safety, and idk if it's really that transferable either.

The people who make real money on youtube should work under the assumption that it's not going to last forever, and if they don't do that I think that's kind of on them.

For every one of those there are probably thousands of smaller creators on youtube who hit the monetization threshold and feel like they need to try to turn youtube into their job and gently caress themselves over in the process.

if I could make a living crushing stuff in a press I'd be milking that for as long as I could.

i think most youtubers that get to a point where they are sustainable in decent comfort (specifically off of the content, when we get to patreon and such things get real murky) are also pretty likely to pick up skills and connections that'll see them through e.g. google deciding to fully gently caress up youtube.

the most straightforward would be finding a decent job doing media/content/ads for some established company, and i think going "here's my 300k subscriber youtube channel" would instantly make you a top-tier candidate.

my wife works for an agency that connects companies looking for this with social media ppl willing to promote that crap and um, yah it’s pretty easy to make a living based on the numbers shes throwing around. it’s actually probably even easier to be the agency

Yeah, the skills required to make popular and engaging YouTube content are pretty transferable even if the specifics of the content aren't. They probably end up knowing a bunch about filming and video editing, communication and community management etc.

It'd be one hell of a cv compared to many people

that whole thing started because he/his parents own some kind of factory or machine shop, so they'll be fine

this stuff has also been around for long enough that there are some people out there with a huge backlog of legacy content at this point, which they still get residual money for. channels like cinemassacre, lgr, or red letter media could probably coast for years based on old videos at this point

i'd really love to know just what kind of money some of these people can get just for shoving a 30 second clip in a video or stream telling people to use nordshark vpn with discount code 'poopybutt' or whatever

i guess it depends on the channel and there are probably a lot of exceptions, like playing video games, but a lot of people who get famous on youtube usually end up taking commissions for the type of work that made their channel famous.

since i watch so much goddamn youtube i got curious about this in the past. this information is out there if you dig around.

iirc (and i am not an expert at all) - it entirely depends on your subscription and average view counts, viewer demographics, CPM vs flat fee, and what sorts of brands you're willing to work with. from what i saw the absolute bottom of the barrel deals (eg you're barely big enough to actually attract brand deals at all) would bring in $2k per video, someone doing 1M views per video could be getting 50k and up, and the absolute top end (mr beast level) were easily bagging 500k and up per video.

this sub-reddit has a lot of discussion about this stuff - here's an example of one such discussion:

also the agencies like my wife works for can generally take a 30% cut. she had a project where her agency literally got a 90% cut of the money exchanged lol. and they landed that one by essentially cold calling companies and influencers that they didn’t even know prior to the specific deal
