https://youtu.be/apMnCRvxru0?si=YkRaI5nHHsI4OISA A kind of goofy public access style tourism video that has some fun parts. They go to the Supper Club, which reminded me of something fun from 94. One night I was at my friend’s tiny techno record store for a party and I met a guy from LA who traveled around playing digeridoo at clubs. I had recently bought a sampler and barely knew how to use it but acted like I did, just bullshitting with the guy for fun. Next thing I know he’s insisting we’re going to play shows together! And he wasn’t kidding, he could talk his way in anywhere, just pushing us onto whatever lineup was already happening, sometimes we’d even just play right on top of whatever dj was playing, my new pal would just walk up and ask where we should plug in. I’m up there playing beats out of time with anything else, a darth vader breathing sample, a james brown sample that said “PASS THE PEAS!”, just totally random junk. My partner was blasting digeridoo and blowing fire clouds over people’s heads. We did that to a lot of good DJs too, DJ Spooky, Soulslinger. At places like Nell’s, Save the Robots, and the VIP room at the supper club. Sometimes DJs were a little pissed off but we got away with it every time, and walking up to a club with my keyboard got me in with no issues. Our stage invasion streak didn’t last long but it was really fun. I recommend it, just bring an instrument to a club and act like you’re there to perform and there’s a decent chance you will, for better or worse.

I graduated high school that year and that summer is a blur of drink and drugs and before I knew it, it was 1995. I did dump a guy that year who was so upset over Cobain he wouldn't come out of his room and his roommates wanted to kick him out but felt sorry for him. I dumped him over the phone a few cities away while celebrating my 18th birthday. When he asked me why, I gave a big sigh and said, you are a bummer. Man I loved the 90's.

Sonic 3 came out in February, followed by the rest of the game being released 9 months later as Sonic & Knuckles with that weird cartridge you had to plug the Sonic 3 cartridge into. You could technically play it standalone, but it was really meant to have Sonic 3 permanently affixed as you couldn't save your game or get the best ending without it. Sega basically pioneered paid expansions for console games. Of course, that also assumes that by the time Sonic & Knuckles came out, you figured out how to pass the Barrel of Doom™ So many people were stuck that if you called Sega tech support, you immediately got a prerecorded message that went along the lines of "if you're playing Sonic 3, you're probably stuck at a barrel in the Carnival Night Zone…" before you even got to the main menu. shyduck posted:We all watched a Ford Bronco Thus began the tradition of Norm Macdonald mercilessly ripping on OJ Simpson. in 1994 i went to my first concert, KMFDM at the Edge in Palo Alto CA. and then later that same year my first big arena show, Nine Inch Nails and Marilyn Manson at the San Jose Event Center. i had never heard of Marilyn Manson before the show and had no idea what to expect. also The Crow came out that year and half the people at that show were in the Crow makeup.

Reptile was probably the highlight for me. really great lights throughout the show but this was before Trent got into his video stuff, except for Hurt which had a projection on a huge screen of what looked like a coyote decomposing. at one point he threw a DX-7 into the drum kit. there was also some kind of routine by Jim Rose Circus but i was heavily involved in some teenage romance drama at the time of their thing and wasnt paying attention Earwicker fucked around with this message at 20:14 on Jan 2, 2024 |

Hell yeah for the NIN set, that sounds like a prototypical Downward Spiral tour gig. I can't imagine how gnarly the decomposing fox looked on a big screen in front of you. I am also kind of envious of seeing Manson on his rise, before his precipitous, awful fall. Man could work a crowd. The Jim Rose thing interests me because it feels like the early-mid 90s were big on carnival stuff, was it just some class-tourist Americana or was there a proper trend for it?

I became a freshman in high school. It wasn't as bad as everyone made it out to be, and I finally rid myself of relentless middle school bullying and gained some confidence back quickly. There was a freshman Friday that turned out to be true, but it mainly involved shaving cream and water balloons on unsuspecting newbies. I never got hit, but I knew a few who did. My friend asked me to go with her to a freshman dance, and it was the first time I danced with a girl. I specifically remember slow dancing to "Baby I Love Your Way" by Big Mountain and "I Swear" by All-4-One which were new songs at the time (remember the movie Reality Bites?). The dance ended after midnight and we ate at Waffle House at 1:00 in the morning. All in all, a good time (and meal). I also switched from playing clarinet in band, something I'd done since I was 8, and taught myself the guitar and a myriad of other instruments. I was like fuckin' Mozart. Play me a song once and I could play it back nearly flawlessly by ear. It was an untapped talent that made me a side-gig musician for the next 14 years or so. I haven't really touched any instrument in about 16 years, but it's something I'd like to fool around with again. It's funny: I started out playing by sheet music for years and finished playing by ear, but I couldn't go back and read sheet music today if I tried.
