I lost track of my age a long time ago. I'm somewhere between 8 and 800 years old. I may be a literal child, or a literal mummified corpse posting from being the grave, or something in between. I can't even tell any more.

Turning 40 this year. Glad to have grown up going from C64 to the early internet, through mobile phones being a novelty to ubiquitous. Technological change has been rapid the entire 20th century, but going from "no one owns a computer" to "we all have a computer in our pockets" seems like a really unique event in human history we just happened to be around for.

I also cut my teeth on a Commodore 64, and came of age during the PC era. Now in my mid 40’s I no longer own a desktop computer. I use one at work occasionally for Excel, but everything else in my life I pretty much use my phone or tablets. I can completely see maybe not Gen Alpha, but definitely their children never touching a desktop machine, much less having to type into a keyboard.

C64 was rad af. I remember my uncle found boxes of diskettes - just had written names on them. He gave them to me (I was maybe 6 or 7) and in retrospect they were all cracked. They had logos with flashing lights that were announcing scene releases. It was cool to be exposed to piracy at such a young age and not even know what I was seeing. My friend’s older brother also had a bunch of games. Both legit and copied/pirated. None of us knew what piracy was or anything, just that you could copy the disks. He gave me Bard’s Tale and I got way into it. Saved up myself for Bard’s Tale 2 and 3. I had a copy of Legacy of the Ancients that confused the gently caress out of me. The copy protection was cool too; like code wheels, codes on dark red paper that was supposed to not be able to go through a photocopier. I remember one disk was something called GEOS. I was like wtf is this poo poo it isn’t a game. It was like pre-windows/classic Mac OS windowed file organization but without a hard drive - all off the floppy. Anyway, I dragged something into the trash can and never used it again. Whatever it was, they didn’t have anything to indicate to a six year old that if you drag that into the trash it fucks the whole program permanently. It was also pirated lol. I’m so glad I had that c64 before I got an NES. So many fun games.

I'm 55. My first video game was Pong, hooked up to a black and white TV back in the 1970's. I'm currently playing God of War Ragnarok. Holy. gently caress.

redshirt posted:Did you play that Rifle game as well? I don't think I had the pleasure. We also had a Magnavox Odyssey with the screen overlays. Played those games on our black and white TV. Still I remember when we got our first color television and an Atari 2600. It was absolutely mindblowing. I just finished Horizon Forbidden West and am really enjoying Ragnarok. It's absolutely crazy to actually watch technology change over five decades; I'll never forget our first microwave. It had dials for cooking times. I had no idea what the hell it was the first time I saw it in the kitchen.
