Crutchfield says I need an adapter for steering wheel controls and lists compatible radios. I wish I could just find something with more physical buttons.

I have an amp and subwoofer I put in a prior car myself, but I also put an aftermarket radio in it. It had a non-working onstar module that I was able to yank and use to power for it to power the amp.

I know some trim level of jetta has a subwoofer that goes in place of the spare tire. Is there already power in the trunk or am I going to need to run a new line through the firewall from the battery? If install was easy enough (including splicing into existing audio lines to make my amp inputs), I might skip the aftermarket radio just to keep the physical buttons that are there now.

I'm not sure if the Jetta's subwoofer is the same as the one in my Mk7 GTI, but here is the OEM if you need a reference.

Edit: You may have to run the wiring yourself. I'm not sure if the wiring harness is different on the trims that had the fender audio system.

That’s the one. I’m not sure if they have different wiring or not, but I know the fender version has pillar speakers in addition to the spare tire sub. I figure I’m going to have to start fresh with everything.

That's probably going to be the case, unfortunately. It doesn't seem like VW leaves a wiring harness that you can just plug into like Subaru does or did. Going off of Mighty Car Mods conversion of a UP to an UP GTI it seems like your assumption is right in having to start from scratch.

I found a post of someone upgrading standard to fender audio using parts from another car, and, yeah, they use completely different wiring harnesses for both. The fender radio just has one audio I/O and all the speaker lines run from the amplifier which is mounted under the driver seat.

Got word today that my WRX is getting totaled. Local dealer has a Golf R on the lot with the DSG, and they're offering MSRP on it. Am I making a mistake? I technically have a deposit on an S3, but it seems like the Golf R is better value at $10k less. RS3 is not obtainable in a practical manner.

E: what's the deal with the engine covers. As I understand it, it's missing due to recall. That engine really seems like it was designed to be heard but not seen. Looks like there are aftermarket ones you can get, but are those just an engine fire waiting to happen?

E2: and by MSRP, I mean MSRP + destination + a few hundred in presumably high margin accessories (some of which I'd have gotten anyway) + $556 in dealer fees. MSRP + Dest matches the VW website.

I'm just glad the mk7 engine cover doesn't encompass the air filter anymore, driving with it removed leaves wires and cables for the coil packs exposed but nothing that will spark a fire as long as you're not bushwhackin' with it.

I bought my mk6 R as a high milage CPO, has held up nicely for the last 100,000mi and only needed regular maintenance (plus carbon clean) (plus wheel bearings & control arms that I've smashed into curbs)

I think you'll be very happy with the R

They said the OEM ones were recalled due to melting, which is why I was concerned about fire.

How long should I wait before browsing the APR catalog? VAG is new to me.

I think 034 Motorsport is the bigger and more popular VAG tuner and performance parts specialist now.

I tuned my car right away. I just flash it back to stock whenever I take it in. I realize that if the dealer wants to they could scan all the modules and see that the car was tuned. However, it’s good enough for now and hasn’t caused my car to be flagged.

So I rented a 2023 VW T-Roc (basically a lifted golf) from Avis in Italy over the summer, and about 30 miles after leaving the rental agency, the clutch totally failed and left me stranded. Now, Avis is trying to make me pay for the clutch repair, claiming I damaged it. I’m nice with a stick, so I don’t believe I did it. I’m in the process of disputing this $1400 charge with Amex, but it’s difficult to conclusively prove that I didn’t do it.

Does anyone know a VW tech who could claim that it would be practically impossible to destroy a clutch in 30 miles?

Keep us updated with how it goes! I have a '23 RS3 and would actually be down to switch to a manual MK8 R but I'm scared about software stuff. I think you made the right call with the R over the S3 — the new rear diff makes the car a lot more fun and the S3 doesn't get that.

Ah, its a diesel one? If it is - Its gonna last forever as long as you maintain it.

If your injector line blew, make sure it has the vibration dampening clamps installed on the injector lines, if they are not they will eventually all crack.

It has the 1.9 turbo AAZ swap, about 70k miles, runs and drives great. Needs some body work.

I'm looking to swap the seats out. I found some off of a 09 Tiguan locally, not sure what it would take to mate them with the doka. Does anyone know if there is a common easy swap for the stock seats?

I doubt the Tiguan seats will fit without modification or making a custom bracket, Maybe some seats out of a Mk3 or Mk4 VW of some sort would fit better.

With any seat swap you basically want to see that someone has already done it online and what they did, or you're in the realm of fully fabricating something. Generally the 4 points of contact to the car will be on 2-3 different planes and angles.

i backed up into a tree because i'm an idiot. i don't care that the back of my vehicle is a bit damaged, but it would be nice to touch up the area where the paint came off so it at least looks black again, it's a big spot though, i'd say an oval 3x6-7"

does this stuff work pretty well?

this is a 2011 A4 in black. It looks like this is most likely "brilliant black?" it's not my vehicle originally bit it looks to be the standard black you see on audis a lot

A bumper sticker will probably turn out better. That’s too big of an area to fix with one of those pens. You could spray paint it, but I’d caution against it.

Or find a replacement rear bumper from a junkyard/wrecker in good condition. Sometimes you can find people parting out cars on FB marketplace or craigslist. If it's the same 'black' and it wasn't exposed to radically different weather or climate it should look pretty much perfect.

Unless you want to pay for a new cover etc you should slap a series of ironic bumperstickers on that.

Alltrack developed a spontaneous (I think?) crack in the drivers' side wing mirror glass. There's no obvious impact and it just kind of wiggles around from near center to the bottom edge. The glass alone costs like $170 from VW but I probably won't do aftermarket as I don't trust the various flavors of wish.com garbage floating around. I guess it has a defrost element and a blind spot monitoring light integrated so it's a little more complex. Fortunately should be an easy repair.

Your side mirror?

I have a SportWagen so slightly different model, however mine fell off from delaminating due to forgetting to turn off the defroster. I found $70 mirrors from VW and like $12 on Amazon. I bought VW though.

Super easy to replace. Adjust the mirror all the way to the inside so you can get your fingers in there. Pull the old mirror off (it is snapped in with plastic), disconnect the two wires, plug new wires in, and snap it to place.

Yep. I could find the glass from VW without the blind spot indicators for like $120 - I imagine that's what your Sportwagen uses because this has two pairs of wires (one for defrost one for BLIS). The most difficult part is hopefully going to be going to the dealer to pick up the part.
