I think Chapelle is the first comedian I've seen get brainworms without forgetting how to be funny. All of the other chud or chud-adjacent comics either were never-funny hacks (Jim Breuer, Bill Engvall) or people who snorted away their funny (Dennis Miller). Chapelle still knows how to craft a joke, but he's weaponized that to get the approval of the kind of people that he originally quit his show to avoid.

I think he was also pro-Brexit and part of the Ricky Gervais-style "I should be allowed to offend anyone I want" thing. It's one of those things where because you pissed off some tories when you were in your twenties you assume there's no further growth needed and anyone telling you to consider the impact of your words just needs to get back in the loving kitchen.
