A Catapult K2 would be a very rare sight in the Periphery at this time, is my big reservation. The Catapult in general is supposed to be a pretty rare design until 3033 when the Combine starts building more. The Cestus on the other hand was a well known SLDF design until its factory got blown up in the Succession Wars.

The sprite looks way more Catapult than Cestus.

E: Also the Cestus 6X has all its weapons in the arms.

It's absolutely a custom, probably based on the K2. There isn't a canon Catapult variant with 18 doubles, and there is no canon Catapult that has two PPCs (of any kind) and four lasers (of any kind). The K2 has 20 singles, normally has MGs, and is the only variant with a PPC that exists yet by the time of the current campaign.

Best guess is that saving two tons on the sinks, plus two tons removing the MGs, makes room for two more Mediums and a lot more armor.

~YAY~ I get to play again.

And I've got Rampart again. But I've gone from Blackjack to an Ostsol which is... a lateral shift, I think. I have no idea if it's good or not, I've just always hated how it looked in the art.

Ostsol

I think I'll just follow the ice-river, and then me and the Marsdens will flank the baddies from, like, 0710 probably. But this turn I'll stop at 0723, looks like. No way to take any shots, I don't think I have LoS to anything.

I'll send the orders a bit later today.

The Ostsol is definitely a BIG step up from a blackjack. Faster, better armor, more firepower. This one is pretty short ranged, but that's not so bad against an enemy lance with as many LRMs and PPCs as this one has. You have enough speed to get in under those minimum ranges easily against a stalker.

From the 1X, definitely.

But ever since I've played the BattleTech video game, I've had a soft spot for the standard BJ-1. It's not a great 'mech, but I did like the weapons mix and the jumpjets.

I love having jumpjets, yo.

I have rear lasers, which is so weird. Do I stand in the middle of a group and activate "disco-ball" mode?

Rear mounted weapons exist to deter light 'Mechs from shooting you in the back. Except where else is a light 'Mech going to shoot you, the front? So they're really bad at their job. Any 'Mech with a reasonable arm-mounted weapon never needs a rear-firing laser.

It's slightly more forgivable on the Ostsol, since the Ostline as a whole never uses arm-mounted weaponry.

Well, I mean, originally they kinda didn't?

But the Ostline's arms are historically ablative. They're there to soak hits, since a lot of heavy 'Mechs have powerful arm mounted weapons. They're just kinda bad at it since they're so small.

Showdown at High Noon 4-2

Even over the sounds of its noisy old internal combustion engine, the pings and pops of chunks of loose ice being crushed under its treads filled the crew cabin of the Marsden. The old tanks had long been acclimatized to Frigid’s harsh conditions, but driving up a meltwater crevasse—even an old one—was still the roughest ride Jagannatha Furlan had ever had. The ice sounded like the rattling of small arms fire, or at least what the tanker thought small arms probably sounded like.

He didn’t particularly look forward to finding out what that really sounded like, but the Marsden was at least reasonably tough and if they kept close to the crevasse they could make an escape if things started to go poorly.

“Be careful, Obligation Lance.” He radioed as his tank rattled past a dangerous overhang. “There’s bound to be more thin ice near the DropShip. We’ll try to mark it for you when we pop up, but the longer we stay down here the less likely we are to give the whole game away.”

OK yes despite having lurked for like a decade I forgot about the phase order. I should've had the PPCs set to fire on the Catapult / Unknown Heavy 1, which I figured would pop out to its flank. Which also has ER PPCs, which isn't a surprise since the Battlemaster did/half-does too.

So I think I'm going to do both PPCs and the LPLAS at the Catapult this turn. I just don't know where to go. Maybe 1516? The LOS from there to the north side of the ridge seems complicated. I don't want to stumble across some thin ice though :(

I get the feeling I'll be taking shots from the Stalker in one to two combat phases too, no matter where I go

Showdown at High Noon 4-3

It was strange how much more responsive the BattleMaster’s refurbished computer felt. Her Mongoose had been a scout ‘Mech, with most of its processing power devoted to multi-spectrum sensor arrays that could’ve counted the number of ants in an army ant column if some mad queen had issued them tiny rifles. The BattleMaster had far better communications equipment—which meant even the terrible relay satellite in orbit was easily able to punch a signal through to the Dimetrodon’s records.

Prodigal tabbed through a few entries and nodded, flagging the enemy ‘Mech under her gunsights. “—Catapult. Some sort of faux-Marauder field refit. Given where the nearest factories are, it’s probably a Kuritan remodel, so I’m designating it CPLT-K1.”

She fell silent, depressing the firing stud on her right-hand joystick. Both of her PPC beams converged almost at once on the Catapult’s left arm, scouring away the armor protecting its PPC. It was the sort of nasty hit nobody wanted to take in the first few seconds of battle—but Prodigal still muttered an untransmitted curse. If the BattleMaster had just been a little faster, her large pulse laser would’ve struck home as well and probably sheered the arm off cleanly. Unfortunately, it was just too far, and the laser array lost coherency about thirty meters short. The lasers still struck home, but without enough energy to even start the Catapult’s exposed myomer bundles on fire.

“Lieutenant,” Rampart’s transmission of her rank made Prodigal wince. Even if it was unlikely the enemy had had time to hack their encryption—even if her BattleMaster was already the obvious target—it was still against doctrine to identify an officer by rank in combat. “DropShip just launched a lance of fighters—didn’t get a good look. Looked like a medium and a light.”

“Weird lance,” Grandpa grumbled, speaking before Prodigal could. Prodigal held her tongue as the old man quietly corrected Rampart’s mistake by making a target of herself. He’d have a talk with her later, if they all walked off the field. “But that’s within our mission plans. They’ll probably make for the raider’s JumpShip to let them know about the trouble, but it’ll take all their fuel to get there. They might strafe us once or twice first; but it’ll take them thirty seconds or so to build up some airspeed and wheel around on us. Be careful, and keep your sensors up. We should have some warning when they swing back around.”

Ha ok, my brain fart was in the second turn. I thought I'd misunderstood the phase order the first time, but no, it's our movement, shooting, then enemy movement (except for aces). So I dropped my LPLAS into nothing and built up a little heat I didn't need to. Only a little though.

Interesting that the Catapult's backing off. I'd be shooting medium/long at it with PPCs. Medium PPCs and long LPLAS at the Dragon, which is pretty tempting (especially since it shot at me). Or I could maybe run to 1217 and open up on the Stalker at shorts with the PPCs and mediums with the MLAS array. That's...also pretty tempting. From 1217, 1515 might block the line of sight from the Catapult and Dragon too, though they're going to have other folks to deal with.

It looks like the Stalker's lining up to cover the gorge to the east too. Hmm hmm hmm.

Thoughts? I think my most potential damage is to try at the Stalker, and it's...barely heat negative if I do both PPCs and all four medium lasers? 31 weapon heat + 2 running?
