95% of your turns in low-level 2e D&D are "attack", even if you're a caster

rtwp makes perfect sense in that context

I still prefer turn-based cause that's my personal taste.

Pillars is pretty cool. It is funny how much the Owlcat RPGs cribbed from those games when you look at it (not complaining, they're all good features): the way you can loot in an AoE, the little in-text background fluff entries you can mouse over, a lot of the HUD elements, etc.

Exploration is ill-advised.
Random rear end Hitman note, lol how the private sector assassination agency not only is known about by the three letter agencies but they're among its best customers. The first proper mission in the trilogy is MI6 paying you to assassinate not-Ghislaine Maxwell and her husband.

That just means you shouldn't make a D&D game. Or that the characters should start off at a slightly higher level/initially level up extremely quickly as part of what is essentially an extended tutorial.

I had to check whether Owlcat made Pillars when I started Wrath, because the two were so similar. Though the similarities were probably exaggerated in my mind due to unfamiliarity with the genre in general. Though at least they were not so similar that it ended up dropping Wrath like I did Pillars.

I think my ideal RPG combat system is probably a turn-based one with an autoresolve function for trash fights (if there must be trash fights). Despite its age, the Gold Box combat system works very well in this regard.

I find the RTWP in the Infinity Engine games to be decent enough though.

I don't have screengrab software and am not about to wade back into that fight anyway, but it wasn't like unique dialogue or anything, it was just Raphael's voice actor nailing the poo poo out of "uncontrollable compelled laughter"

My hot take is that Raphael's unique boss music is overrated btw. It's not nearly long enough for a big hard boss fight, meaning it repeats a lot, and his voiced part is spoken-word rather than sung

That said though the game really nails making him scarier psychologically by having him and Korrilla and Hope and the Curator all repeatedly tell you how stupid you are for pissing him off and literally playing a laugh-track sound effect when you steal the Orphic Hammer. Your main thought going into the fight is "man I really hosed up by doing this". Even my second time doing the fight, knowing exactly what my strategy would be, the effect was still kind of there.

I like it a lot, it was unexpected(but appropriate) for him to have a musical number. I just started nodding my head when it happened.
Also it looped a lot for you? Skill issue :smugdon:

yeah the trash fights in the gates baldur's's work pretty well for rtwp. they are mostly just a nuisance though and i probably didn't get any enjoyment out of them past a certain point. once you've slaughtered a few dozen helpless spiders or goblins you pretty much get the idea.
my preference is to just design the whole thing turn-based.

one thing bg3 coulda done better is to have a z-level control for your cursor because the system they put out is pretty imprecise. could just be something to move up/down 0.1 m per tick. and also once your characters can fly their default movement should just be flying, let's get real here

there's a mission in blood money where you have to assassinate a woman's fiance and father in law and it's heavily implied she's the client because there's a no killing her rule and there's a newspaper later with her living high in a casino with a himbo on each arm

IIRC if you're standing close enough to her when you kill the fiancee she says "thank Gawd!" in a heavy southern drawl lol

hitman has a vr port but its apparently extremely garbage. been playing this vr only game, asgards wrath 2. it's totally a throwback to like, the xbox games that were all trying to capitalize on the success of the 3d zeldas. its pretty rad actually, swordfighting not-moblins and gathering mushrooms in the desert.

the thing that makes it vr special, other than the combat, is the scale. everything's terrifyinly gigantic and your menu is basically gigantic gross old witch (the three and one, the three sisters of fate, the kindly ones, erinneys etc) hands showing you your inventory, and it took a bit for my brain to classify them as "safe".

vr is really good for just triggering primal fear in this way, vr outer wilds is a loving terror trip and i havent even visited Dark Bramble yet

fallout tactics has an excellent rtwp system. maybe the best one because the action points really lend themselves to making both real time and pause-based work smoothly better than the move+act systems

It's funny that Bethesda released this, then thought "Hmmm, maybe we should actually make a game instead of thousands of miles of nothing," with Morrowind.... and now is fully back to thousands of miles of nothing with Starfield.
