The whole “industry plant” thing is endlessly tiring because if you even point out it’s a thing people vehemently deny that it is and then accuse you of sexism. The reason why most plants are women is because record label men with money who want to make more money know what sells. It’s gross but unfortunately true. Also there are notable male fronted plants in the indie sphere (e.g the Strokes), but still it’s women who disproportionately bear the brunt of criticism in general, so of course it seems like they’re the only ones who could ever be plants. Also gross. All that said, I love Wet Leg and the Strokes. The dinner party band is super mid though aside from Nothing Matters

skooma512 posted:At that point, who even gives a poo poo? It's entertainment, so surprise, there's a lot of nepo-babies. This remains an important truth in all this. Being related to a famous person is definitely an easier way to get your foot in the door, and there's less at risk if you fail, but people still have to like the end result to some extent. The real nepotism problem happens with behind-the-scenes roles, where you not only make more money but your job isn't even necessarily at stake if one or two projects bomb, because you're basically not allowed to be fired.

Now let's talk about how virtually all musicians who have great success grow up privileged. Gotta have free time to work on learning instruments and writing songs, gotta have money to buy expensive equipment. The poor ones who still make it, hell yeah.

With Wet Leg, a lot of it is misogyny, but they did appear incredibly polished and fully formed. That probably has as much to do with the fact that bands can't really build up a sound for 3 albums before crossing over any more. It happens (look at Wednesday and Rat Saw God), but where the stakes are initially much lower. If Wet Leg have any sin, its how loving annoying and laboured that "Big D" line in Chaise Longe is. We get it, you sort of said "Dick" on the Radio 6 breakfast show, how subversive.

Waxahatchee announced new album and tour. Two Philly shows, one with gladie, one with snail mail, and while I like both, I’ve more recently seen gladie, as I missed out on the valentine tour so I might go for the snail mail night.

My main concern for Wet Leg is drat that has got to be a lot of pressure for a follow-up album that has that many great tunes on it. My fav is “Ur Mum”

I always find is funny with Wet Leg people point out they didn't do many gigs, between when they were formed and their first album and that's evidence they were just put together by a label. So between 2019 and 2022 not many gigs eh?

My favourite EP from an unsigned artist that rocked but never amounted to anything more has to be DOM's S.B.G.G. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0Phey_w41Q It even had a single of sorts with Living in America, in that there was a version with Gucci Mane (who has had a soft spot for awkward white boys with stupid hair for decades now). But I don't think dude was interested in promoting it or doing interviews. Then I understand he got side tracked with his work as a session musician/producer or whatever. And the music he did put out as DOM wasn't anything special. If anyone else is a fan and can recommend something based on this style that'd be cool. One of my favourite EP/LPs from an artist who isn't a professional musician has to be Ryan Gosling's Dead Man's Bones.

Sprints Debut album is out now and it's pretty great. Maybe doesn't have quite the urgency and rawness of their eps which does take away from it a bit but still great. Saw them live in Dublin at the end of last year and they are blistering live.

In Wet Leg's defence, they're from the Isle Of Wight and while there aren't a lot of places to play live there and it costs an absolute loving fortune to get a boat to the mainland, so they could very easily have done a load of gigs in pubs in Newport, Ryde and Cowes. See also Coach Party

Waxahatchee tickets are 60 bucks-which is a bit crazy to me. I mean it’s not prohibitively expensive, but if it was like 30 or 40 I might have splurged for both nights instead of one.

I mean it’s not prohibitively expensive, but if it was like 30 or 40 I might have splurged for both nights instead of one. I think I've seen her more live than any other artist. Been following since American Weekend and she pretty reliably released and toured almost every year in the 2010s so it was easy to rack em up. I have measured out my life in Waxahatchee shows. I even proposed to my wife while wearing a Waxahatchee shirt lol. 2021: $37 2020*: $30. This was cancelled due to the pestilence. The 2021 show was at the same venue and I don't think this was a credit, so they raised the price there too. 2019: $30 2017: $23. 2014: $15

Ticket fees in general have went up more than average inflation. Venues, artists, staffing, etc.. all tried to make up for lost time while dealing with their own inflation woes from COVID and then the prices stayed high like virtually everything else. Unless you are a diehard and MUST go to a show, wait until the week before it and start checking the aftermarket sites. You can usually pay less, sometimes half as much.

Waxahatchee are playing Massey Hall (fancier venue, concert hall rather than club type venue) so I'm hoping maybe there's like an expanded string section or something for the extra money.
