a miserable failure as a person

an incredible success as a magical murder spider

I mean. Is it good. Does it capture the vibe. The melancholy. The off-kilter psychology of dwarves.

Is it like a literal litrpgstrat thing where I am going to have to read a lot of job priority adjustment. Help me out here.

Dude has apparently written multiple novels about Dwarves before so it has it's own fairly developed setting. It's kind of dry, but I'm fairly certain that's an intentional affect to convey that the Dwarves are slightly alien to humans.

I hope Sleyca is okay, RR hasn't updated either so it doesn't seem likely to be just "oops didn't finish this one in time".
E: nvm guess it's not that late in America

SS122 patreon People were talking about squishy low rank supports getting targeted since like chapter 3, makes sense to see it here. Can't wait for Alden to start catching things out of the air of course.

SS107 RR

quote:

Lute was still eyeing him nervously. “The Palace of Unbreaking won’t let Chainers bestow a wordchain—whether it’s beneficial or not—on unwilling people under normal circumstances. It’s counter to their entire ethos.”

Hmm it's difficult for patreon readers to comment on RR chapters as they come out because I don't want to be taken as implying that something has or hasn't happened yet in the patreon chapters.

I will just have to settle for SS 122 spoilers maybe this is why hazel can't go into exile because the palace kicks her out when they find out whose consent she violated. It's akin to insulting the Quaternary herself! And why she's angry enough at Alden to use her skill on the knights which I think is going to happen. Manon really aced her check to give Aulia a really bad time huh.

Ss 107 when he shared with Alden it required his consent from the system. So either he got it prior from the band or they just clicked yes on their interfaces without saying anything because it's not the first time he's done it for the band? I agree it's not entirely clear.

Most interesting thing to me in the latest SS Patreon chapter is that Tuyet, S-Rank Meister, is apparently significantly faster than Alden using Azure Rabbit. Someone pointed out that Tuyet probably puts a lot of foundation points into speed, but it still highlights the raw stat difference between ranks and what higher ranks are just "passively" capable of outside of their Skills/spells. I imagine every trained adult S Rank who isn't something like an Adjuster or Wright is probably very superhuman in terms of their base personal attributes, even outside of their specialty. Hell, even the non-physical ones are probably several times as strong/fast.

It also supported my feeling that "Dart Meister" is probably one of the most effective Meisters to be. I imagine it's probably better than Bow Meister in most situations.

The real power behind countless overlords

Random Super Supportive thought:
I wonder if Artonans looks spells up on the system?

I would think they do. The system includes Earth’s internet and spies in a zillion ways. I bet it includes the Artonan internet equivalent too. It must be so much easier for knights to be able to look up utility spells when they need them than having to lug around spellbooks everywhere. Even if most Knight combat assignments are in areas without a system, they don’t spend most of their time in combat zones (because nobody does that and stays sane or even safe) so there’s probably a bunch of Knights and other wizards who want to be able to lookup spell steps through the system.

It's interesting, but that same flat emotional affect makes a lot of chapters dry and kind of boring.

It was okay enough for me to read the whole thing, but the weird gender imbalance makes me uncomfortable. The author decided to make Dwarf genders imbalanced with only 1 in 4 being female. And a pretty heavily gender segregated culture. The author mostly uses this to justify making women something to compete over, and it's only tolerable because the female dwarves still get to pick who they marry. The actual text is tolerable so far, but the comments can get pretty upsetting. Especially when a female dwarf finally gets onscreen.

It makes me reluctant to buy his other series.

The culture is way worse in the first prequel books. Its really an evolving sociological look on dwarven society and how it evolves over the centuries due to actions taken by the protagonists.

First book dwarven society is segregated as all hecks. If you're not a first son of a wealthy family forget ever having a shot at marriage. Or even a craft.

Women dwarfs who want to pursue a craft is somewhat looked down on but they are still allowed. Their families decide who they marry.

Dwarven indentured servants abound. Crafters and warriors are the high class and all the menial laborers are second class citizens.

This "changes" radically at the end of the first book but already by the second book influential people are trying to go back to "better times were dwarves of worth ruled and people knew their places"

Dwarven wifs are main characters too and they do cool poo poo.

Anyway. I think it's excellent.

It's a classic Tolkien trope, "They breed slowly, for no more than a third of them are female, and not all marry."

Probably based on the fact that there were no female dwarves ever mentioned in the Norse mythology he was referencing for Middle Earth.

Dwarves of icecloak: Honestly the books are fairly good but I'm just blasting through them. That time of year where you can't do poo poo.

Third book was a whiff for me. Interesting premise with we're looking at the way regular dwarves live? How a relationship starts and such.

Also we see society has regressed even more and we're back in a poo poo society.

Makes sense because things were sliding just 100 years after the crippled king and now its been 500 years.

The smuggler Prince story is good ? But then the book just throws its hands in the air and says "a dragon burns it all down" and its honestly coming from nowhere. poo poo ending. I do not know what the author was thinking

I still very strongly doubt that something will go seriously wrong with the chaos event, at least to an extent that isn't mostly resolved relatively quickly. This series is supposed to be a very "slow grind" and Alden isn't even remotely close to being able to meaningfully contribute to some sort of terrible "chaos event" on Earth. Unless it's resolved very quickly, it would also essentially require that the entire "setting" on Earth be set on fire (everything involving the Anesidoran organizations, social dynamics, etc), which doesn't seem like a thing that Sleyca is going to want to do so anytime soon.

In general it seems deeply unlikely that it's possible for these "demon exterminations" to go completely off the rails just because some people make mistakes. There's presumably a reason they go off without a hitch constantly, and I imagine that the System itself is even capable of intervening if it comes to it.

For the most part Sleyca has been good about having surprising events simultaneously be difficult to predict while also making a lot of sense (like the recent events from a couple chapters ago - all the "moving parts" are fully explained). The "something terrible will happen during this demon extermination" theories just don't feel right to me. The idea that something like "some kids trying to sneak in to watch the extermination" will trigger some unprecedented disaster just doesn't seem believable.

Supsup120s: he was the only other person involved, it was either him or Thwart Hog. The point was plausible deniability so she can't sue him or whatever. You get this a lot in real life about how everybody "knows" somebody has done something but that's not the same as them having said "I did this thing". You also see it with Hazel where right up until the end Alden was still not 100% certain and was relieved when she admitted it.
