They're not government, they're run by ffrdcs, which are private companies that doe contracts with to run them.

They're mostly run and staffed by M&O contractors. The actual federal workforce at the sites is comparatively small.

I knew the Labs were manged by third parties, but I never realized employees were treated as such too. huh

A couple jobs I'm looking at have the "Public Notice Direct Hire" tag. If I understand things correctly, direct hire jobs dont use the points system and behave more like the private sector process. Is that right? Do direct hire jobs move faster than typical government openings?

The Royal Navy has been forced to use LinkedIn to advertise for a Rear-Admiral to be responsible for the nation’s nuclear deterrent amid a growing recruitment crisis.

No serving sailors are suitable to replace Rear-Admiral Simon Asquith, the current Director of Submarines, and the Navy has turned to the professional networking site to find his successor.

Defence sources told The Telegraph they hoped to attract a retired officer who commanded a submarine during their naval career to the £150,000-a-year, two-star position.

The advertisement says candidates must be a member of the reserves or have previously served in the regular forces and, if chosen, will be responsible for “highly classified stealth, elite operations and Trident, our nuclear deterrent”.

FAA somehow manages to repeatedly have a conference at casinos in AC, and I'm just genuinely surprised that flies with management, even if it's almost certainly the cheapest conference space available in AC.

This is probably not worth it unless you're concerned about an actual violation, in which case let your agency's IG handle it.

the only time I invoked the hatch act was when a subordinate expressed her desire to assassinate the president, during a performance review. she quit before it could go anywhere.

surprisingly enough, it was trump she wanted a go at.

If a job has a 7-9-11-12 promotion structure, are those promotions granted annually or do you have to spend two years each in grades seven and nine before the jump to eleven?

Also would add, at least at the IRS it's not automatic; your manager has to submit a PAR for it. So if you have a new/forgetful/disorganized/lazy manager, you might have to prompt them a bit to make sure it gets done.

I know SSA is pretty dry as far as jobs right now, but I've been surprised at the lack of remote positions available. It's likely the last realistic chance at a 12 job I have in this agency for many years without packing a moving van.

I got passed over for the OS spot in a small office nearby, but the person that got it was a 20 year employee who was already a GS-12, and has spent their entire career in that same office. So there was zero chance I was getting it.

I wish there was some innocuous phrase that managers could use in job announcements to let us all know "don't bother applying, we already know who's getting it"

Discendo Vox

We don't need to have that dialogue because it's obvious, trivial, and has already been had a thousand times.
New leadership in the place I have been aiming for so...so many years, has apparently decided to rehire former employees in their 70s who retired and went to contractor status, rather than open jobs.

In general if it's a really short open period and there's some weirdly specific experience/skills needed it's pretty much the same thing

No. I have an application with criminal investigation as an investigative analyst. My application was referred to the hiring managers at the two locations I applied for.

Really, I'm asking because my team lead was talking to another CSR and said something about it taking two years to get from grade nine to eleven. Maybe I overheard them wrong.

Applications are open for the Mansfield Fellowship Program for anyone with two years of federal experience. You will spend a year learning Japanese in the states, followed by a two-month homestay in Ishikawa prefecture, then 10 months in Tokyo working in their counterpart agency.

One of my coworkers did this just before the pandemic and said it was a great experience, but Japanese work culture is very different (but I think most everyone here knows that).

Just wanted to say thanks for putting the Mansfield Fellowship on my radar. I was able to convince my agency to let me apply (that alone is a process) for a recent cohort, but was ultimately not selected. :reject:

Despite not being selected, it was great to get the agency support and they've encouraged me to keep putting in for it as long as it's something I'm seeking. And since voicing my interest in the program, I've been pulled into a number of higher level events to give me more experience and things to put on my resume.

You're your own biggest cheerleader and others won't know what your interests, ambitions, or even expectations are unless you voice them. Don't be shy.

Also, none of you apply until after I get selected. Don't need any more competition.

That is something we're absolutely insane about, not letting contractors know how much we pay for them. Staff bossmasters and contractor PMs alike flip the gently caress out when it happens and it's always hilarious.

Good luck! I got discouraged reading the past successful applicants profiles. It seems like a lot of higher level management and analysts and that sort of thing, whereas I'm more of an individual producer. I'll probably give it a shot eventually, but I fear my agency won't be gung go to let me disappear for a few years

Yeah I never understood that either, it's kinda silly here our contractor support is so underpaid they rarely stick around for more than 6mo. (Admin assistants) But we're paying the company like 3x their salary and they just churn through peeps like fast food.

Hell, I was a contractor in the same branch (part of Financial Mgt) for 8 years and we went through 6 PMs in that time, probably 15 contractor employees. 4 of those were straight firings, 2 of them left and came back and at least 1 of them straight up quit on the spot one day without anything lined up. Nobody was underpaid. Bad federal branch chief.

For those that stayed (and the ones that came back) it all just turned into a way to keep the .gov email address when applying on usajobs.

Very. There are a lot of job protections if you're in the reserve and it's a great way to get a double pension. You just can't use it for mil service calcs in your civilian retirement.

Edit. This guy has great retirement guides for both special and regular fers employees. Well worth the Kindle price and you should read them early in your career. I get nothing obviously.

Hey gang, first time in here. I am interested in applying for a position with the VA as a Veteran Service Representative. I know the tiniest bit about federal job application process, only that the resume format is a lot different than normal ones.

Does anyone have any good resources on how to write one of these? I’m a veteran myself and think I can pull off the education substitution but this is a whole new world to me.
