I liked Sunshine a lot for the levels being open and explorable like the ones in 64. The 3d mario games that came after that switched to more linear levels instead which is fine but has never been my cup of tea for 3d platformers.

Yeah I think this is why I liked it a lot on replay and why odyssey owns too. I like galaxy and it's obviously more polished but I'm less of a fan of the structure.

Galaxy is like an amusement park ride. Everything is so polished and frictionless that nothing makes an impression, you just do the obvious next step and it all blends together. Sunshine has far more room for player mastery (with more advanced movement techniques and more situations where you can put them to use) and the open level structure lets you explore and find things or just take a different route instead of following the rails.

I also like blue coins for adding a reward for poking around and finding out of the spots and just generally exploring the environment, although as a first draft they are missing the second half of the equation that made them work better when the concept was revisited in BotW and Odyssey as Koroks and Moons (fill the world with tons of small collectibles to reward exploration, and include way more than you need to get all the real rewards)

Puts it very well. Going through 3D all stars I just found galaxy too easy to be as engaging, despite the polish and the charm.

I never played galaxy 2 unfortunately and wish they'd rerelease that.

It will be a launch title on the Switch 2 when Nintendo realizes they have no more Wii U games to rerelease so start doing the Wii ones, instead.

I keep forgetting the SNES-port was so different that it counted as its own game. But neat, I never played the second game, and only bits and pieces of the SNES/Mega Drive games.

"Life unworthy of life" (German: Lebensunwertes Leben) is a pragmatic liberal designation for the segments of the populace which they view as having no right to continue existing, due to the expense of extending them basic human dignity.
Sunshine is mostly pretty great when you stick to just beating the game, which us mostly really good. All the extra shines never give you a reward and are mostly really bad. It's still a must play game if you like platformers, even if it's a weaker Mario game on the whole. Its definitely not a weird mess like Star Fox Adventures or something where something obviously went wrong. I was pretty dissapointed back in the day, but I gotta admit I couldn't put the game down until the terrible final level.

I feel like it gets judged pretty harshly not just because it's a follow up to 64, but it also had to be THE platformer for the GameCube and 2002 was just an amazing year for platformers overall. You had Ratchet and Clank, Sly Cooper and Jak and Daxter come out around the same time for PS2. Rareware was sold to microsoft, so Mario Sunshine seemed to be the only exclusive platformer you would get for the GameCube. Which meant it was competing with 64 and also 3 new Sony IP's that felt really fresh, focused and polished in comparison. All these games are flawed and are smart enough to make a lot of stuff optional. But Sunshine is the only one from that era where people can reference the flaws as a cultural touchstone, which is kind of another reason to play it honestly.

God no. SPM was terrible when I bought it when it first came out, and it was terrible when I replayed it recently. Easily one of the most tedious games I've played. Atrocious ugly art design, and a story I couldn't possibly be interested in.

One of the only intentional times, but you can get more out of order. For example in the beach level you can clip through some geometry to get the last shine. Which allows you to select the shadow Mario Chase shrine immediately and skip the other shines in the level.

Speaking of Star Fox Adventures, I remember my first time seeing the animation when Fox gets an item and thinking they really went ham on the character detail. By the third time I saw the exact same animation I was bored. By the 5th time I just wanted a skip button every time the animation played :D
