I think a key part of Dan Campbells quality as a coach is that folk are still questioning if he’s a good coach or not, after taking the Detroit Lions to their first division in 30 years, their first home play off win in 3,000 years, and now preparing for the divisional round, 3 years into his job. I think he’s extremely happy to sit behind, maybe even lean into, all that Muscle Coach stuff while he just gets on with his job. I think it’s intentional and part of the answer.

Staying in great shape into your retirement years takes discipline and diligence. It really wouldn't surprise me if he was the same kind of hard worker as a coach. He deserves some of the laurels for the team getting as far as they have already. Theyre in the mix.

Campbell is a fantastic coach, the only question I have at this point is his longevity/how he is able to sustain this over the long term, which is less about him and more about the role itself for any HC, especially the best ones who repeatedly have to rebuild as their staff is poached

I don't think McCarthy gets fired. He seems to be able to talk his way through any interview; that innate ability some of us have to get the investor class to trust every word you say. There were so many times in GB I was sure he had clock-managed his way out of town only to shuffle around a coordinator or take over play calling and suddenly he's teflon again.

What's tough about sacking McCarthy is the regular-season performances are so drat good that it's a full year between crushing disappointments. So you get plenty of time to see objectively very good football and think "Ah I mean, this dude's got it together, surely getting bounced in the playoffs was a fluke." Then: whomp. It's like having a family reunion every five years to remind yourself why you only have a family reunion every five years.

I think Jerruh could have talked himself into believing the last couple years were flukes, because - hilarity aside - those were really close games that came down to the final seconds. GB didn't fluke themselves to 48 points. There's no way you can attribute this to bad luck or one bad decision. He's done.

I think the fact is he gets the performances from his rosters they’re capable of. Dallas’s talent isn’t as good as its reputation, because Dallas. The problem is there are only 4-5 coaches at most that get more out of their talent than they “should” so you’re likely to replace him with worse or no better. Ironically Green Bay replaced him with one of those 4-5 guys

There is a confidence, belief and pathological demand within that franchise that they should be winning. And without being crass about it, Jerry is running out of time to see it. What does 12 regular season wins count for today? What does 12 regular season wins for 3 years straight count for today? Absolutely jack poo poo. There are too many appealing HC candidates on this years cycle for Jerry to sit on his hands after another early play-off exit and an absolute shallacking of that scale last night.

He can develop QB talent if we forget about Brett Hundley. Do not trust him to win big games or to take that last step. He will lose games in two ways: 1) Team comes out completely unprepared, flat, cannot adjust (see 2012, Giants) or he will completely mis-manage the clock and kick cowardly field goals (see Seattle, 2014). At some point you just have to accept this is the kind of coach he is.

Mike McCarthy has done something more impressive than winning a playoff game--he's ensured that no matter what the Cowboys do, the outcome is likely to be extremely LOL. If they keep him around for another year I see more regular-season success that makes the playoff meltdowns even funnier. If they fire him, they are unlikely to get anyone significantly better for their situation even with the big names out there, because ultimately the factor holding back the team is Jerry Jones. FWIW I was relieved when Fat Mike got fired from GB. It was time for someone new, but I don't bear him any ill will. He's an adequate coach and I admire him for fleecing Jerry so hard with all his bullshit about film study. Same, I was happy to see him go but when it came out he was lying in his Cowboys job interview about watching every minute of every game of a season I admit it did make me like him more. Lying in a job interview is very humanizing. He might be the closest thing to a normal human in the NFL coaching ranks. He's not loving Patricia or Mcdaniels that's for sure.

So 8 total firings, possibly 2 more after today (McCarthy/Sirianni), and only one job has been filled so far (Mayo to the Patriots). That's going to be a lot of movement. Re: the Cowboys game, I had time to sleep on it and I realized that this Cowboys season is loving exactly the 2010s Packers under McCarthy. Dominant in the regular season, racks up loads of stats and accomplishments, Pro Bowlers and All-Pros out the wazoo. Humiliated at home against a wild card seed.

The idea of keeping a replacement level coach like Mike in this coaching market is dumb. Every position on an NFL roster is evaluated against what is available for acquisition in the open market, why should coaching be any different? Keeping Mike for the Cowboys wouldn't be as brainrotted as a team like the Jets keeping Saleh in this coaching market but it's pretty close.
