[...] Yet in the absence of any unmediated, firsthand accounts from Chinese prostitutes themselves, we have no choice but to utilize these sources. [...] We should also keep in mind that the short-lived Californian, which lasted from 1891 to 1894, took a negative stance on Chinese immigration. Edholm's article on Chinese prostitution was part of a special series aimed at showing that "the Chinese are not a desirable addition to our population. In short, continued restriction is needed and demanded. "

The testimonies of the Chinese women in this article regarding their recruitment, immigration, mistreatment as indentured servants, and eventual rescue are similar to other available published accounts. Of noteworthy interest in this article, however, are the assertion that mui tsai were often groomed for prostitution and the revelation that slave owners might have resorted to crude surgery in order to capitalize on the stereotype that the vaginas of Chinese women ran in a different direction.
