I'm immersing myself in the lore since Sisters vs. Sisters is coming to the Xbox. This poo poo is byzantine even by anime bullshit standards. Half the characters are Japanese puns of companies I've never heard of. Any good primers for this stuff?

Oh wow, cool. Good job.
So?

Half of the game dialog is also industry references.

What kind of story they will make with the Xbox/Activision merger is what got me interested in this series.

You'll probably want to at least be familiar with the mainline games: mk2/Rebirth 2, Victory/Rebirth 3, and VII/VIIR (aka Victory 2.) Those are the "numbered" games in the series that maintain continuity.

The Neptunia anime is a mash up of mk2 and Victory. Afterwards there were three OVAs released starting in 2020 but they're just commercials for a related figure (Purple Heart in a revealing outfit, a grown up Human version of Neptune in a revealing outfit, Neptune in a wedding dress.) Only at the end of the latest one do they hint at the Victory 2 story possibly coming.

Rebirth 1/ReVerse (PS5) is a re-imagining of the original PS3 game where the side characters from Victory come to visit after figuring out dimensional travel in the then previous game. That sort of got a sequel in the spinoff game Super Neptunia RPG but the Canadian development team didn't notice the connections and Rebirth 1 Plus flopped in Japan.

That's on top of the first game right?

The first game from PS3 is kinda retconned out of existence. The true ending didn't really leave room for a sequel so they rebooted the universe from the goddesses representing companies to representing the consoles themselves. Then the PS4, Xbone, and Wii U released requiring them to make up some story about the cast powering up instead of dying like all their predecessors did.

Nepgames treat canon like a vague suggestion. There are goddesses. They are powered by people buying merch. That's about all you need to know.

GameMaker Revolution is out today. An Xbox port was also announced.

It's an alternate universe with the same characters as VII but they're more focused on game development over consoles. The older human Neptune from a universe where she isn't a goddess warps in and her captive fairy she uses to dimension hop escapes and starts being the manipulative character she is, setting off world events. Big Neptune awakens the Jaguar, 3D0, and Pippin goddesses and is immediately drafted to be the CEO of their game company.

So far I'm liking it better than Sisters vs Sisters just because there aren't any action points restricting attacks. Also having a four character party feels much better.

That was almost all indecipherable to me.

At the core of Neptunia you have the 4 goddesses: Neptune, Noire, Blanc, and Vert representing the 3 big consoles plus hypothetical Sega console. CPU Candidates Nepgear, Uni, Rom, and Ram are the sisters of Neptune, Noire, and Blanc representing their handheld offerings circa 2005.

In Neptunia Rebirth 3/Victory there was an alternate dimension where Neptune didn't become a goddess by their world's rules, and after clearing the game you find out she does exist in human form and likes hunting bugs. She finds an evil fairy named Croire that she then captures (thinking her to be a weird talking bug.) That character grew up and is who gets referred to as "Big Neptune" because in that dimension becoming a goddess freezes the aging process and she's not one. She's been hopping dimensions since by sapping Croire's powers with her pinned in a special notebook.

Neptunia VII (Victory 2) added an additional 4 characters S-Sha, K-Sha, B-Sha, and C-Sha (Square Enix, Konami, Bandai-Namco, Capcom) also named the Gold Third. They replaced the goddesses as rulers thanks to some meddling from another goddess. They seemed like one off characters but have returned a number of times now.

The new game has all the goddesses and candidates running their own separate game companies competing for market domination instead of fighting for their respective nations.
